Are you reading it while listening to the corresponding album or just reading it?

Where are you in the book? What do you think so far?

Well another Friday off and I hope to get this finished up this weekend. Here are some more details and more will follow. This should get you salivating again.

I will be making 2 sets of discs (10 discs total) and sending them out to 2 people who will in turn send to the next person....etc on down the line. Those of you without burning capablility I will be making a set(s) for you as well. How many over the border (Canadians) do we have who want to participate? Not sure what postage will be or how customs is these days. Maybe I could get some help on this. I'm not sure how many don't have burning capability, so not sure how many other sets I have to make and send.

If I could get both the Canadian's who want to participate and the non-burning people to just post a note in the thread so I have an idea of how many more sets need to be made. Then maybe I can get some help if it turns out to be too many. Sound good?? :D
The first offering is 5 discs worth of material from 1969 Jan-August (The Early Days. Literally)

I apologize up front if I get a bit over enthusiastic about Led Zeppelin. They have been by far my favorite group since the late 70’s. These recordings only solidify the greatness of these four musicians. As a live band LZ were unsurpassed in spontaneity and improvisation. They were not afraid to take risks on stage, musically. Sometimes this was amazingly successful, other times it didn’t work out so well. What’s evident in the music is the passion. The studio releases were about perfection and structure. The live shows were about passion and experimentation. In fact in the early days when LZ was an opening band many groups refused to follow them, they were that good even though they had only been together a very short time.

I’m not sure how much experience any of you have had w/ these types of recordings. Very few if any will be like commercially available recordings. Generally the earlier the recording the more marginal, as recording equipment gets better so do the recordings. Also remember Peter Grant (LZ manger) was absolutely against anyone recording Zep w/o permission and took great lengths to make sure it didn’t happen (a lot of good that did) so because of this some of the recordings aren’t as good as they could have been. SQ on some is excellent, some are very good and a few are marginal. Too bad LZ concerts weren’t as well documented as Hendrix was. The marginal ones are included because the performance of the band far surpasses the marginal SQ.

These will either be your cup of tea or, you may say WTF, this sounds like crap. Either way, remember the spirit in which these were offered. If it turns out they aren’t to your liking just package them up and send them on to the next person. The idea is to share the music. I want feedback, but please try not to be too negative. It’s only costing you some postage a few $0.39 blank discs to try something different. Thoughtful, honest, articulate criticism is always welcome.

Also if these don’t appeal to you for sonic reasons… I assure you the later shows are much better quality so don’t give up based solely on these first offerings. You should also avoid listening to these on super high resolution systems as you may become disappointed (discs 3-5 are not too bad). These are what they are….in most cases Amateur recordings. FWIW, trying not get expectations too high, maybe you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

NOTE: I would prefer that the “seed” gets passed on and not a copy of the “seed”. I have made sure that there are no “artifacts” on the “seed” recordings. Sometimes copies made incorrectly can introduce these “artifacts” onto the discs and I want to avoid this so the next person can get a “clean” copy.

Set lists and an in depth analysis of each performance to come shortly. The first offering is 5 discs worth of material from 1969.

Since most who want copies are all over the board as far as a learning curve for this kind of thing I'm just going to be burning it in .WAV format. Not everyone has the tools/know how to use the other formats. Trying to keep it simple.

So many good shows. Very hard to pare it down to a few key performances (and this is just for 1969). Sorry spasticpitbull, but when you see the set list (which I will probably post tomorrow) you already have one of the shows this time around. Actually I may bump this 1st installment to 6 discs as I found another show with excellent SQ. It never ends, I'd love to share every single one but that's not possible. :)

    Stay tuned.....

This one is included. Depending on which version you have. There are several which have varying completeness and SQ. Looks like about the same set list although these recordings were known to be mis-labled all the time. For this show there is a SB quality version, a so so audience version, and a very good audinece version. None by themselves is complete. So they might both be slightly different and my version may compliment your version or it maybe the same.

    FWIW

Cool. We can finally start to get the ball rolling on this one. My thoughts on this were that the seeds could go around to the people in the US first then once everyone has had their turn with them down there they can be shipped up to canada and passed around up here. I'm thinking this would work best because it might cut down shipping costs but I'm more worried about how many times they would have to cross the border and the extra border delays associated with that. btw I live in canada and I'm interested. Anyone have an idea what shipping on 5 or 6 cd's will be and how to ship them?

    Thanks again for offering this.

It won't be too bad and just put them in a bubble envelope that can be bought at the PO for a couple of bucks. We don't need to ship them in jewel cases, just some cd sleeves.

I know some people are getting organized for Polk Fest which is quickly approaching. This is the list I’ve compiled so far for those who are/were interested. If you are still interested do nothing. If you’ve decided to drop-out; post to this thread so I can take you off the list. If you are not on the list and want to be on the list post to this thread and I’ll add you. If you can’t reply until after Polk Fest no problem this thread will still be here. I’ll wait until after Polk Fest to start sending discs. This is going to be just like the cable swap program. I’ll send the “seeds” to a few they will burn their copies and send them on to the next person. I’ll post the tree shortly after I confirm all those who still want in.

Those of you w/o burning capability (I need to know-so far only Toxis) will be taken care of also.

Currently I have picked all shows and am ready to burn with the exception of one which needs to be ripped and track indexes added. It was recorded to cd as 1 continuous track, a real pain in the ****, damn bootleggers! As a side note, said cd has the wrong show date and includes photos from the Knebworth show in 1979 when this show is actually from 1969, real intelligent!

The following attachments can be viewed using MS Word. The first attachment is the set list/date information. The second is an in-depth commentary on each show and provides great insight into the development of the band, the music, and its place during that point in time. I encourage all to print it out and read along as you listen to these remarkable recordings. If you have problems viewing the attachments let me know, maybe I can post a text version or e-mail it to you.

Here are the participants so far….if I’ve missed anyone let me know.

Ok this is just about ready to go....I know I've said that before, but really it is.

Here's what I have so far:

    (2) Canadians
    (1) w/o burning capabilities.

If this is incorrect let me know right away.

There are 6 discs included this time. I have come up w/ a "tree" showing who gets it first and then who they forward it to and who the next one forward's to....etc. My question, is there anyone here who WOULD NOT want to burn an extra copy to forward (12 discs)? If each person is willing to burn 1 additional copy other than their own we could cut the distribution time in half. You'd be sending the "seed" and then an additional burned copy and of course keeping a burned copy for yourself. I completely understand if that is too time consuming/cost prohibitive. If you don't want to post your concerns here please PM me and I will keep it private.

Right now if everyone just keeps forwarding the "seeds" it's 6 persons deep. I'll be providing 3 "seeds" to start it out. Reasonable turn around is about a week so the last person is about 7 weeks or more from getting a copy. If people agree to burn/distribute an extra copy this would shorten it to about 3-4 weeks. Maybe when all said and done each person may have incurred about $10-12 shipping and buying discs if we double up.

I want this to be a Karma item so no selling/sending money to anyone. I can do this either way. I just didn't want to assume everyone was willing to make an extra 6 discs w/o at least putting it out for discussion.

I am leaving in about 30 minutes to go visit a sick relative out of town( 1 hr away) and won't be back until later this evening. So fire away with idea's and hopefully I can start "Seeding" by Wed or Thur. I'm really trying to keep this as uncompilcated as possible.

    Brock,

I'll burn 2 copies of each if that will help speed up the process. Any recommendation on a particular brand of cd or dvd to be used? Is there really any diference between brands? Are we doing cds or dvds?
