That was shaping up to be one of the better TV shows too. Maybe this will generate enough interest to bring the show back! Looks great so far!

This flick has its own series already on the SciFi channel called "FireFly' . Same exact people (characters) and story line . Series just started a week or two ago and it seems pretty good so far .

Unfortunatly FireFly was canceled after 12 or so episodes. The DVD has 2 or 3 that never aired.
I'm personally hoping this Movie generates enough buzz to bring the show back as it was REALLY good in my opinion. Great cast, and they seem to click a lot sooner than most casts do. -
I bought the firefly series last Tuesday and just finished it last night. Some very good stuff. I can't imagine why it got dropped so fast.
I'll be heading to the theater this Saturday to catch the movie.If...

I enjoy the show quite a bit during the first airing (many moons ago). Not sure why it died so quickly.
(I think the theme song/openning was a little weak. It didn't give me that "I want to watch this" feeling. The also billed it as a western in space, which probably didn't help).
I'm suprised they got the entire original crew. They were a great cast. If the movie's a hit, I wouldn't be suprised to see the series come back again.Denon AVR-3803

The movie was quite good. It's a typical sci-fi/action flick. The storyline was fun to follow, great characters...and humor was very present. I'm now interested in seeing 'firefly'...and will pick this movie up on dvd when it comes out.RTi4-fronts

If there ever was a roll model of how a Sci-fi movie should be made, this would be one of very few. It's been almost 30 years since I have enjoyed a movie this much in a theater, that last movie, Star Wars back in 1977.
Saturday night I went with a couple of friends, by 7:15 as the previews started the theater was nearly sold out. It was a full house. This is how I remember going to the theater used to be. A crowd that was fully into the show; cheering, clapping and yelling as things happened on screen.
This film has it all; good acting, a good story that holds your attention for 2 hours. Decent special effects, could have been a bit better but I imagine the budget for this film was small. We get lots of laughs; some real heart felt emotion, the intensity of a good space battle (during the Reaver / Alliance fight).
This film delivers one hell of a ride and gets a 10/10 from me.
The theaters presentation of the film was decent. On the audio side of things it was excellent. Good solid bass that was not over cooked and an active surround sound track that filled the room. The film itself looked soft and lacked any real detail and the shots onboard Serenity were quite dark, darker then the TV series. I give the presentation a 7/10.If...

How can you say this movie is good? I saw it this past friday and it is, without a doubt, one of the worst movies I've ever seen. If you put a gun to my head, I couldnt tell you what the plot was. If you're not a fan of sci-fi...this one won't be appealing to you. I liked it. It's not something that's going to win any awards, but it entertained me for 2 hours. I never got into Joss' other works, but this one was good.RTi4-fronts

I had the exact same reaction to Alien Vs. Predator. That was undoubtably the worst movie I have seen in my entire life. I put the thing in my clay pigeon puller and blasted that sucker.
I'll still see this one, but there are some movies out there that some people seem to really like that I can't imagine anyone would like.
Ah, Subjectivity. -
subjectivity and expectations...I have very low expectations of sci-fi...probably due to watching too much mystery science theater 3000. With sci-fi you can't expect art, you can't expect good diologue, but you can expect to escape reality for two hours...which is all I ask. Both Serenity and Alien vs. Preditor allowed that escape and I was entertained...so in my book, good movies.RTi4-fronts

See, I just don't find there be a way to explain anything as a rule in regard to this. There aren't a lot of movies that I watch that I don't like becuase I watch movies as an escape from reality a lot of the time. To me it depends on what the movie is trying to be which sways my reaction. If it's a movie that is trying to be serious, consistent, and have a 'point'....it needs to do that. If it's just a fun movie where reality goes out the window, then I expect it to be that and be done well. When a movie doesn't live up to what it's trying to be, or what I precieve it to be, I usually don't like it.
Then there are just some movies where you ask yourself why they didn't just leave the whole thing in the cutting room floor. Even still, more power to you if you can find enjoyment from it. That's what it's all about.
It's all subjective which is why I never let a review steer me away from a film unless there are just blatant things that I know will upset me or that would take away from my enjoyment of the film.
You're right about going in with low expectations though. That's always the key. I try NOT to read the reviews and just decide from myself based on the trailers, etc., if I'm even remotely interested in something. That also gives an element of surprise and you're not sitting there with pre-conceived notions about the movie while you're watching it. -
To me it depends on what the movie is trying to be which sways my reaction.
This is the only part of your post that I don't agree with...here's why from my point of view:
I am not a film maker...I write, but most would consider my work poor...and I'm not inside the heads of those who are making the movie. So, who are we to judge what a movie is trying to be? Let's take an example, 'Mars Attacks!'. At face value this movie sucks horribly, they seem to be taking the movie very seriously and through trailers and other means of media, it was billed as a serious film. If you watch it through those eyes, it could be the worst film ever made....but if you understand where the movie makers are coming from and their angles, it's pretty damned funny. LOL....I guess we're kinda making the rules...let's see we've got Subjectivity, no expectations, and now don't make judgements until you understand what the filmmaker was trying to show you.RTi4-fronts

I think I decide what a movie is trying to be when I watch it, but even still that's subjective and merely my opinion. Everyone is going to interpret things differently, but I think it's easy to differentiate 'fun' from 'serious'. Like I said, I don't really pay to much attention to reviews so my perceptions are my own and I'm not given much direction when I watch a movie.
The Director can't force folks to see a movie the way he or she intended it to be seen and interpreted. Their goal is to entertain and sometimes it's a hit and other times it's a miss. Expecting everyone to 'get it' is an unrealistic goal. There are some movies out there that people say are just sooooo great that I don't see that way.
I don't know...lol... -
I don't know either...just writing inbetween advising students at work...thanks for the reality escape .
The reason I said who are we to judge, was because our misinterpretation may cause a good movie to be seen in a bad light. If you watch 'Mars Attacks!' and take it seriously, it is one of the worst movies ever made (I did this the first time I watched it). But if you take it for what it's worth and try to understand the point of view of the filmmaker...It's pretty damn funny.
There are some serious actors in the film, which would make me think that the movie was supposed to be serious....but in reality it's an off beat comedy. My misperception caused me to have a bad time at the theater...yet when I watched it at home, I was rolling with laughter.RTi4-fronts

I wish I remembered enough about Mars Attacks. I think when I saw it I thought it was funny, but I was a bit younger then and didn't really recognize all the big names in that movie.
So as far as that example, do we know what the intention of the director of the movie was? Dry Humor or a Serious movie? I don't know, it always amazes me what people like and don't like.
One thing I do know....comedies are always better in a crowd.
I think it's time to go home now.... -
It was a Tim Burton flick...and at the time I only knew of Edward Scissorhands and Batman from Burton...which I thought had some serious tones in it...plus with the big names in the movie: Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Benning...I was expecting something more serious than I got.

I really enjoyed Serenity, and I was not aware of the Firefly series. After seeing the movie I did purchase and enjoyed the series on DVD.
After watching the episodes on DVD I appreciated the movie even more and saw it a second time. I am hoping for a sequel to Serenity.Main theater: Paradigm Studio 100's v4 L/R, CC690 Center, ADP 590 x4 Surrounds. Dual Outlaw LFM-EX-1's, Yamaha Aventage RX-A1010 as Processor, Anthem PVA-7 Amp

This is one thing that I thought they did well with the film. There was enough basic back story on the characters that one could enjoy the film without having watched the series.If...

Just watched this one. Really enjoyed it - I loved the humor thrown in especially, that's often missing from this kind of movie. My ONLY complaint was that I was lost towards the beginning. I almost felt they could have made this movie LONGER so I would have had more of a clue.
Still real fun.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Watched it as well. One hell of a film. Humor, wit, emotion, good acting, good story and some good SE's. Can't ask for much more.
The disk sports some nice A/V as well. Picture is clean, detailed, sharp, the blacks are deep and dark and the colors are vibrant. The audio has a solid front soundstage, great use of surrounds and some low clean bass.

Ron's mention of color reminded me of one annoyance from this movie - if you watch this in a dark room, your eyes tend to settle down a bit through the dark scenes, and then they have a flashback / dream sequence in blinding white light... I had to shield my eyes more than once because of this.If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I agree with you totally Ron. Serenity was one of my most enjoyable films of the year, and led me to purchase the Firefox series on DVD to further familiarize myself with the characters and the story.
I love the action, humor, and chemistry of the cast, and found the DVD to solid all the way around.Main theater: Paradigm Studio 100's v4 L/R, CC690 Center, ADP 590 x4 Surrounds. Dual Outlaw LFM-EX-1's, Yamaha Aventage RX-A1010 as Processor, Anthem PVA-7 Amp

I was very surprised to find this movie as enjoyable as I did. Was a great blind purchase. I had never even heard that there is/was a tv show. I hope they decide to make sequels or better yet, a prequel."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,
