Well, the speakers arrived intact today via UPS but three out of the for midbass drivers are frozen. I asked the guy to run a wire from the + to - posts on each speaker because I thought this would prevent cone movement during shipping. He ran the wires but the drivers are still dead/frozen.

I tried to contact him about this and he hasn't responded yet.

BTW - I pulled one of the drivers and this was written on the back:

MW6500 MANUFACTURE DATE 10-27-800 KMJ

So what is the date? 10-27-1980? That can't be right.... can it?

That is a common problem with shipping Polk's...that's why I don't do it if at all possible. The wire method you instructed him to utilize doesn't do anything to prevent this from occuring.

I hope he tries to split the costs with you, but I would start looking for new drivers.

Already contacted Ken. Drivers are on the way. Is it better to just completely remove the drivers when shipping them?

Yes, secure them face to face and use bubble wrap. It's still a crap shoot, but your odds are much much better.

The same thing happened to my monitor 10's. All four drivers were froze. My speakers were dropped by UPS causeing some damage to the corners of the speakers. The shock of dropping them caused the drivers to freeze up. I did get UPS to pay for new drivers. You may want to check on a insurance claim on yours. The new drivers sound great.

msjohns - I've tried contacting the seller but I still haven't heard back from him. I think that he has to initiate the claim. Am I wrong about this? Should I be the one to contact UPS about the damage? If he didn't insure it I'm probably stuck. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks :)

He has to be the one to start the claim. I got lucky with mine, I bought them from spasticpitbull (Paul) and he went out of his way to get me taken care of. If the seller will not help you I think your out of luck. We are lucky they still make the drivers for them.

I thought you sounded familiar. I was reading that thread shortly after I realized I had a problem. Like I said earlier, Ken hooked me up already - I just hope this seller doesn't give me any static about resolving this matter. Thanks for the info!

It's not the sellers fault the drivers froze and since there is no external damage to the cartons or speakers themselves UPS isn't going to pay. There's really no point in asking the seller to file a claim.

Obviously it's not the sellers fault, but shipping is shipping, and regardless of what everyone here KNOWS, doesn't mean he shouldn't file a claim.

As I look at and deal with moving company (shipping) damage claims almost daily......sure. I'll take Hera and you can take Cali.

No, I'm sorry bro. You're not dealing with the delicate nuances of the claims end of shipping. As far as packing stuff, you da man.

I love you man, let me bear your children :)

I have dealt with PayPal, UPS and FedEx claims....and never had an issue. I'll knock on wood, but I don't sweat shipping for regular stuff.

You get the goodies of bad shipping, lol, that just dawned on me.....and in that I love you even more :)

He did it today. :) I didn't want him to get screwed - I would've rather had UPS pay for it. I tried to tell him that I was in no hurry but he decided that it would be easier than **** around with them - he said that most of the hassle would've been on his end & it wasn't worth the time and effort.

but DHL is no better. They can man-handle the living crap out of packages too. I just received a new 65lb $10K CC-TV camera transporter last Tuesday at work. (Someone else signed and accepted delivery of it.) Real nice! Ooops, what the.... upon closer inspection I noticed the face plates were missing and I could see the five sheered off screws that used to hold them on. These devices are built like tanks with the face plates being the weakest part but somewhat protected by the frame. Finding the box it was shipped in I noticed one end all smashed in. Inside were the face plates screwed together and the remainder of the five broken screws that held it to the frame. Kinda took the fun out of getting a new piece of equipment.

When I bought my 2.3s ten years ago I had them shipped to me in upstate NY by truck from IL without a hitch. The seller shipped them in the original boxes which he wrapped in plastic, placed side by side on their backs on an oak shipping pallet and strapped them down. In this manner they were handled only by forklifts. I received them in 100% working order.

Bob, I'm glad to hear your Polk's were shipped by a sane person and they arrived safely.

With no affiliation to any shipping company here are my experiences in the past year with deliveries to my home.

UPS: you can't file a claim for damage. The shipper must do it.
UPS: you can't communicate with anyone at UPS about your claim, they tell you to contact the shipper.

Fedex: you CAN start a claim either online or at a Fedex office (including Kinko's)!
Fedex: you CAN talk, fax, or email with a Fedex claim adjuster regarding your claim. In a claim I got both the claim department's general fax number and the claim adjuster's personal computer fax number.
Fedex: 'home ground delivery' is usually cheaper than UPS ground.
Fedex: if your package arrives in their local distribution center they will ship it the next day whereas UPS holds your package until the last possible date near your delivery guarantee.

    edit: YMMV

    That is incorrect.
What reason would they have to do that?

So you don't get a service you didn't pay for.

At one time, FedEx would drop off PM overnite freight with AM overnite. Didn't take long for folks to figure that one out and revenues dropped.

Another reason would be so that they can control their flow thereby reducing the number of late delivery guarantees they have to pay.

I've had several deliveries from each company in the past year and that was how they were delivered to me.

I used the tracking numbers to check where the packages were. Deliveries from the opposite coast arrived within days to a nearby sorting center then collected dust for 4-5 days. Between the 7th and 10th day they would finally go out for delivery.

FedEx packages were straight from city to city with no layovers.

Are you sure your talking about UPS- United Parcel Service and not USPS -United States Postal Service?
Were your packages delivered past the guaranteed delivery date?
Pkgs shipped from coast to coast are 5 days or less most locations guaranteed.
What are some tracking numbers of the pkgs?

If I had the tracking numbers I could find out the reason he had for any delay in receiving his pkgs.If they were shipped UPS.
No problem if he doesn't, just trying to help.

All were just in time. After a 4 day furlough in a nearby sorting center, the packages would finally go out for delivery.

The cardboard packages went in the recycling bin once the contents were checked out. The bubble wrap followed shortly after I made sure each bubble successfully passed pressure testing. :D

Thank you for your offer to help and perhaps you can help in future?
