Trey, those look REALLY nice! Good work!

As far as routers go, they are the most valuable tool you can have when making speakers. I've been doing DiY speakers for about nine months now, hardcore, and after using a router for the first time about three months ago, I was FLOORED! They are God's greatest gift to man! Make sure you get a plunge router and a Jasper Jig to cut your circles. Roundover bits for edges, chamfers to let the back of your speaker breathe, rabbets to recess your drivers...the best thing of all is you can use one practically with your eyes closed. Just line up the router bit with the wood, adjust the depth and the bit runs on a bearing against the wood. I was VERY intimidated when I first got it, but after a few test runs I was hooked. The possibilities are endless when it comes to using a router. It's a must-have in my books.

Also, if you want some links to good speaker building forums, check these out:

Thanks for the pics...what kind of paint is that??? I like how you can still see the grain! Very cool looking!

Ugh...what the hell did I do to the back of that one...

I was using a square to line em up, I think I started the side, with my thumb to the edge...and the other one, I went off the square...lol...sorry

With such a great wood like birch, why would you paint it rather than stain it? Otherwise seems like you could have just used MDF , no?

I painted them to match the decor in my Florida room. Didn't want MDF. Blah.

I personally also would have liked them better stained, but then they're not my speakers.

So what was the total cost to do these things - without labor?

    Sid / Early B:

Would you mind working with me on a pair of these? I'd like to do all the work myself...I just information from the two of you.

Do either of you have a set of plans for speaker cabinets, a list of materials used, which drivers you used, etc?

Any info you can forward on will help me greatly. This is something I've wanted to do for a long time and this looks like a fun project. Feel free to respond here of send me a PM.

PM -- you can order the drivers from www.madisound.com. They also have the plans for the enclosures on their site in pdf format. Get the rest of the parts (ports and binding posts) from www.partsexpress.com. PM me with your address if you need some acoustic foam.

So Sid, I assume you didn't build these boxes off the model from the link on your site for the back loaded horn design? So did you just build a box with the dimensions above with a blank interior (except for the foam)? Or did you build the bass reflex box?

    bass reflex...

the dimensions I gave you are external dimensions for 90 degree angle cuts...

Is there any difference between the FE166E and the FE167E besides shielding?

So did you build this thing exactly per the diagram, or did you make any changes to dimensions anywhere?

The width cut is like 1/16 or so off (bigger) - this was to speed up the process using the table saw, mainly because the frence had a dip in the center, and I had to compensate on a 1/8th...made it much easier...

However, I would just stick with 8.5" and load down the enclosure top and, back, sides, bottom with foam pads.....

The foam pads are crucial, as without, there is a huge reverb within the cabinet...so definetely make sure you cover every inch except the front...dont gotta do the front...

But yeah, the measurements are within 1/16

I used 3/4" wood, so if you do 90 degree angle cuts with 1/2" or so wood, then the measurements would change...

    Internal dimensions...

    are like...

    Internal - Width - 7" : Height - 16.5" : Depth - 7.75"

    (I had it saved)
