    It has a tweeter...

Just not your normal tweeter ;)

It does not have a tweeter. It has a whizzer cone, to extend high freq response.

Since you are running 8ohm, you can easily add an 8ohm super-tweeter, maintain absolute phase and be at 4ohm. A lot of people actually do this - but you'll need to pad it down a good amount (it will be much more efficient), and pass it REALLY high 12-15Khz - just for that touch of top end sparkle.

I wonder how a carefully, and strategically placed 'hole' in the center of the dustcap would change the high end?

Com'on guys you can't call that a Tweeter.

With Sid's speaker cabinet design, the 1 way speaker with a whizzer cone tweeter all high freq sounds must be worked through the cabinet.

With a 2 way design the woofer is done this way, the tweeter is more directional so it will have better clarity and separation.

I think Sid did a nice job with his speaker, but you took the easy way out with this one way speaker.

Sid I do understand you did what you did, but I think you should rethink way this speaker has bad clarity and separation.

    Holes in the dust cap...

I thought the objectives of dust caps was to keep the dust...*out*...

Now everywhere I go they put holes in em! :p

It aids the high frequency, it TRIES to be a tweeter, how about that?

As for adding a tweeter, eh... I dont want to mess with these until I can try them in a larger room, etc...

Whoever said it had bad clarity? I said in some recordings (Bad ones) the seperation is terrible. This things eats up recordings...

The Definitive BEATS it in clarity....what do you expect exactly?

I am VERY impressed with full range speakers...I would now love to own a high end full range speaker

and I cant wait to try these speakers on that tube integrated Russ was talkin bout!

Joe, single driver speakers, done right, are the cats meow.

You can never understand how much a crossover actually takes away from the sound, especially in the midrange - until you hear a speaker designed properly, sans nasty network.

Until you hear it for yourself, you'll just have to take my word for it. I helped Sid embark on a very basic, fundamental speaker design that guys were building in the 60's, and still build today.

    Ok Sid,

On your next speaker design go with a Woofer / Crossover / Tweeter.

Not just a Whizzer Cone tweet / Woofer direct wiring thing.

Have fun Rock out dud ;)

You guys really need to hear a GOOD full-range driver in a proper cabinet. It will blow your mind. I've heard a handful that would make your jaw hit the floor.

Here's an example of a killer full-range speaker:

Ok would think maybe that would sound OK, the speaker has what a 4 / 4.5 / 5 inch speaker. A speaker this small can have a nice mid / upper sound range, and with a good cabinet design extending the lower sound range. Not bad, Sid design is a 8" speaker with doesn't extend to the upper range well.

Fred has the Voight pipes up for sale (Houston) right now on Audiogon for $450, fyi.

The woofer is highly damped in Sid's enclosure, and DOES exhibit an 'in the room, live performance' midrange, and extended highs.

The Labyrinth cabinet design loads the driver back wave into a very articulate, effortless bass response.
