Been messing around with my little Canon Elph and a pair of Sears binoculars...

Subject matter is a hawk that has taken to fishing in a nearby bayou and dining in a tree across from the house...

Here's a fully zoomed Elph shot...
    More later,

hm... that looks more like an osprey to me :-)

Nice picture. We snap a lot of digital photos through my wife's spotting scope. She's a very serious birder...

Thanks, mrh.... Been sending that photo to some birds of prey web-sites and have yet to get an ID in response...

"Little" fellow (albout a 5' wing span) moved on when a front came through a couple days ago and dropped the temp into the low 40's. Hopefully he'll be back when it warms up. Fishing was awful good here... at least 3 a day in the 2 - 3# range...

First Osprey photo I found, courtesy of Google:

    www.geometer.org/TT2004/ Photos/images/Osprey.jpg

they're common on the Chesapeake Bay in MD (where I grew up) and not at all uncommon up here in MA in the warm weather. They are migratory, and they DO love to fish :-)

BTW, I think I forgot to mention that your photo of Junior with his (or her) fish is quite nice! Just e-mailed a copy to my wife...

Thatsa my bird... Thanks... Did not realize Ospreys were so big.

One neat thing happened after "lunch' one day. I saw the fish skeleton drop so I knew he was done eating, but he kept opening his beak and leaning down as if he still had desert or something.

After watching a while it was apparent what he was doing was the equivalent of us licking our fingers after a bucket of KFC. He was just opening wide and running his tongue along both sides of each claw.

Anyway, it was fun observing him for a while..

Yup, they're big. Wouldn't want to meet one in a dark alley, 'specially if I were carrying a fish...
