Yes the nikon has a 1.5 factor, 300 = 450 in 35mm speak. Most Canons are a 1.6.

A little bit ironic. I've got the Canon Digi Rebel and a 75-300mm lens and I was debating on if I should bother getting a doubler. Would have been nice for that eclipse.Just... Bonham

I loved to have that Canon Digital Rebel and a 75-300mm lens, then the knowledge and the ability to compare that picture from Dlew how sweet it was.
Just have to say love this forum has we share what works and why it might. More like a "Family" then forum members.
Thanks again to Dlew for the tip on taking better Moon pictures.

I waited to buy a digital camera until I could get a good one with interchangable lenses. The Canon Digital Rebel just seemed the best compromise of everything I wanted at the time I wanted it.
I have to say I've been impressed with the use I've gotten from it and some of the actual results. Bought it only a few months before going to England for three weeks and took close to 2200 pictures. Just the cost to buy that much film and develop it justified the heafty cost of the camera itself. From the sample photos I've seen from other SLR's the Canon just had better color overall.
Also got some pics of the NASCAR races at the start of Sept in Cali... to actually be able to get a perfectly clear (in focus) pic of a NASCAR passing directly in front of me on the track (I think we were 34 rows back) surprised me. A shot I took of a helicopter stopped the rotors dead in the picture (which actually made the shot look funny since you don't get the sense that the blades are moving).
I have picked up the doubler. So I've effectively got a potential 960mm zoom now (300x2x1.6). I think that's around x20 zoom on a standard digi camera. You can basically print a 24x36 photo and not lose any quality. Even if you're not going to blow your typical picture up that far it does allow you to zoom into a small section of a photo and still retain good picture quality.
Fortunately the 75-300mm lens I have has a built in image stablizer, so I can take shots by hand without any loss of focus even into twilight, but and night you absolutely have to have a tripod and either use a remote or the timer to take pictures in focus (which is why I don't have any decent shots of the eclipse).
I'll get the best pic off the camera and try to post it here, but I doubt it'll be very in focus as I was just holding the camera by hand and the shutter was open for a full second.Just... Bonham

Ok, I can help here. Since you can only post a 100k picture or less. You first need to resize your picture, by using Win XP emailing file / picture back to your self in a smaller size. Now with the smaller size just post new message and on bottom of message it say's to insert file you insert now smaller photo. Your done.

Are you a photographer? Those are some excellant pics!
I've been wanting to get a digital SLR. I really wanted to go for the Canon D20, but it's just too steep in price right now for the package I want.
The Digital Rebel looks like it really rocks! I may have to reconsider looking at that one.
JohnNo excuses! -
I'm not a professional photographer. I didn't even sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.
Seriously though, I did take a photography class in college (which is more then most people do... so it helped some) and I did have that teacher enter a picture I took into a creative arts magazine, which I didn't know about until I "won" and it was published. I supposedly have (so I'm told) a "good eye" for cool shots. But still, if you ask me, when you take 2200 pictures on a vacation you could be a complete dolt and get a few good shots. Of course, a lot of photographers will also tell you they take loads and loads of pictures of which only a handful are 'professional' quality. So I don't know if I should consider myself talented or not. Heh.
I do have a lot of cool pics apart from these, but I didn't want to fill the thread with a bunch of pictures (basically come across as showing off).
Oh... on which Canon to buy (if it's Canons you're considering), if you're not hard on things you can get away with the Digital Rebel, but if you tend to be even a little hard on your toys, get the next step up. It's body and other components on it are made from metal instead of plastic. In either case, spend a little cash on a good padded carry bag that'll fit the camera, a standard lens, and a zoom lens. My bag was about $60, but it's padded, has a built in 'poncho' for rain, and can hold the Camera, the charger (and cord), a 18-55mm lens, a 75-300mm lens, and the doubler all in the main pocket (modifiable with velcro wall dividers) and all the spare components go into the small front pocket: Spare battery, extra compact flash card, small notebook and pen, a pen flashlight, etc. There are side pockets that I tossed an umbrella and a mini (maybe 9" tall?) tripod into either side too.Just... Bonham,
Hey, what do you think about JPG and RAW?
Do you shot in JPG or RAW?

I've just been using JPG. Where my Camera is a 6.3mp and I have a 1gig card it allows me to take almost 300 pictures at full resolution, allowing me to take a full days worth of pictures without running out of space (if I was using RAW I wouldn't be able to go a full day of all out picture taking like I did in England). Then I can just download them directly onto my laptown when I get home (or to the hotel). And it's going to be rare I need better quality then the full 6.3mp resolution. I do carry a 256meg backup card however just in case.
To be honest I don't even know much about the software I'd be using to mess with the RAW images anyhow. That's the nice thing about the camera... I can get as simple or as complicated as I want. I can go full manual or I can just put it on full auto. Usually I use something in between (set the f-stop and apature for example). There are pre-sets for certain uses too; Sport (speed), Portrait (put the background out of focus for example), Landscape (everything is in focus), etc.Just... Bonham

Bonham,
I my self use the same camera and use JPG. Tried RAW but it really didn't make a difference to me, so I back to JPG. If you shot that much you don't really have to time to reconvert back to JGP from RAW or JIF.

The lunar eclipse was a bust here on the East coast due to cloud cover.
What was awesome this morning was the crescent moon a couple degrees above Jupiter (one, BIG, BAD, mother), and quite a few degrees above Venus, which was as bright as a flashlight. Should be visible tomorrow in the early morning again. A real spectacle from here.
