I still agree with the sentiment that if you need to drop 30K on a car to feel young, agressive or whatever, you might consider a shrink instead of a new car.

you need a car with "nalgas"

Ok. It's high time somebody bring this thread back around to the subject: CARS!!!
On a serious note, I agree with most everybody here that there is a balance between material possesions and family & friends. However, I can't help but notice that something is glaringly absent in the list of the truly important things. Sure, friends and family are very important. They're there to cheer us up, to comfort us, to give us advice, and to just chill out with. However, no matter how great that is or how warm it makes us feel or how much it seems to 'fill' us, there is something else: God. Our relationship with God is really the most important thing in our lives. People often times try to fill a void within themselves with material possesions. This obviously won't work. However, just family & friends won't really fill that hole, either. God is the missing piece that makes us whole.
Now, onto cars . You had a Grand National?!?!?!?! Man, those things are sweet!! Then, you made it do the quarter mile in 11 seconds?! That's wicked. What all did you do to it? Shave the heads? Lighter pistons? More radical camshaft? More boost? Higher octane fuel? Higher compression? Nitrous? Sounds awesome; I'd love to know more about it.

TroyD,I still agree with the sentiment that if you need to drop 30K on a car to feel young, agressive or whatever, you might consider a shrink instead of a new car.
Now many years later of being a Dad,Dad needed another car for reasons and found a more sporty ride more appealing.Alot of time and effort went into it.My uncle directed me to German cars which I found handling superior to anything I have ever driven.
My purpose of this thead was alittle about cars but more about the "getting older and feeling the need to remember your youth".
As Madmax pointed out, alot of things make us happy,I so much enjoy finding a new/old love well in my views passion for cars again.I find detailing so much more fun instead of having to wash the cars.I enjoy my garage more now and have my Toolbox from when I was a auto technician loaded with Snap on, Mac, Matco, S&K, and even Craftsman tools.I loved taking some time last Saturday to clean them.
audiobliss,
Yes 11.66 @ 117mph she went. This was at Atco Raceway in New Jersey on a very nice cool 70* nite.Man did she launch. My car ran in the 12's for a long time.To get into the 11's here is how she was setup.
T49 Turbo,Port and polished intake stock, Dutweller Intercooler,52mm throttle,40lb injectors, muscle fuelpump,Dutweller 200r4 setup transmission with a 2800 stall.Alunium drive staft with new U joints.3" downpipe with stock headers.Hooker exhaust but I ran it with a open 3" dump pipe.Custom programed chip designed for the way my car was setup.K&N air cleaner in the factory box but with a cold ram air system stealth underneath modified.Frame braces, rear seat brace,Drive shaft loop, one air bag in the right coil spring, Hoosier Slicks 26 x 10 x 15.Koni drag shocks 70/30 in the front and 50/50 in the rear.
After I made that run,the guys at the track wouldn't allow me to run anymore due to the fact I didn't have a roll cage.I didn't want to put one in as I drove the car all the time.

lol!!!! rofl!!! Right!
Dan,
I was right: AWESOME ride. Surprisingly, I actually understand half of what you said! lol I do have a quetsion, though. I was reading in a magazine here lately and it refered to a 'down pipe' and I have no clue what one is. I asked my dad, as he knows a lot about cars (Snap-On dealer; you like Snap-On or Mac better? ), but he didnt' know either. From what the article said, I assume it's a pipe that connects the turbo to the exhaust; idk. I fully understand the concept of turbos & superchargers and how they work, but I really don't know much about how they're hooked up. I know the turbo is in the exhaust system somewhere, but beats me where. (Well, closer to the engine than the mufflers, I assume. lol)
What color was it?
It reminds me of my dad's friends '68 Camaro. Beautiful black, never been wrecked, 454 block with 427 heads. I've forgotten about the carbeuration, though. Racing radiator, & spark plugs & wires, racing fuel cell, drag automatic tranny, those awesome drage wheels & tires so that the rear tires almost meet in the middle of the car . It also has a roll cage in it. I hate I don't know more about it, but I gleened all that from lookin' at it for about 20 minutes. The guy cranked it up and, man!!!! That thing's a beast!! I'm tellin' ya, I've never smelled a smell so sweet, heard a roar so amazing, nor seen a car twist with a slight touch on the throttle like this Camaro. It was AMAZING! Man, he was wantin' to sell it, too......:( All well.George Grand wrote: »

A downpipe is the exhaust pipe that connects to the turbo. This is it's exhaust.Stock it came with a 2 1/4 downpipe.I upgraded to a stainless steal 3 inch.
How a Trubo works,
The turbo forces air into the intake via a propeller.Inside the turbo there are 2.One gets power or makes it spin from the exhaust right from the headers, and the other sucks air in and forces it into the intake. There is a shaft that conects the 2 together. They life in 2different houses.Te intake side is Alunium and the exhaust side is steel. The dump pipe lets out the exhaust pressure after it goes threw the propeller .Turbos run when you press a certain amount of throttle.Vaccum becomes boost.
Super chargers work almost the same except how they are driven.Superchargers are belt driven off the crankshaft pulley. They come with replacement pulleys and a new belt.Different pulley sizes determine the amount of BOOST the engine is going to see at wide open throttle.
Both are great ways to make alot of horsepower and monster torque.
I like both Snap on and Mac.I don't perfer one over the other.I find both companies make really good tools is which is why I own both in my box.
Snap on howeer makes better crows feet wrenches.Expensive but well worth it.I think they ran aroud 300 for the set.I don't remember but I do rememeber being shocked at the price.Had to have em so I gave up the cash.I have so much money in tools I lost count after 10 grand.Dan

I don't know about that. If I were homeless and wearing a stolen HolidayInn towel in the middle of a big city I think I would be fairly unhappy. Even on a nice day with friends and family around.

If you can, go with a motorcycle. After you ride one, you will lose all interest in caged vehicles. The performance of a modern sport-bike is stellar and nothing can compare.
The performance issue has been debates for ages now and there is no clear winner. On some tracks (without many curves) bikes tend to be faster, on some other tracks (with lots of tight turns) cars rule. Bikes do it cheaper but cars do it safer. -

This thread certainly has accrued a collection of reminders of what truly impacts the heart and life. Kudos, Bravo, and all that recycled rubbish.
Odds are when you are with your friends, you did not consistently find yourself sitting in a happy little circle out in the field sitting Indian style with eyes closed, enjoying each others imagination. Typically there is an object that is the used as the source of entertainment, be it a ball, legos, a car, audio system, or even a freaking weed eater. People dont need toys? ****. I am not sure about you gents, but I am human, and entertainment of the mind is fairly critical. Material objects often give a great platform, friends and family are the necessary components. The importance and significance of life has been vaguely discussed enough to warrant me not giving it a second mention.
Sean,
You seem to be missing the point that I'm trying to make. I'm not saying that toys and so forth are unimportant. They are in the proper perspective.
However, for 12 of the last 20 months, my immediate possessions were:
3 sets desert uniforms, 2 pair boots, 7 Tshirts, 7 pair boxers, 7 pair socks, 2 boonie hats, 1 pair tennis shoes, 2 pair gym shorts, 1 set civilian travelling clothes, 2 towels, 2 wash cloths, 1 shaving kit 1 portable DVD player, misc DVD's and CD's plus my glasses, watch and wallet. I lived in a 24'x14' tent with 7 other guys.
My point here is that material possesions aren't the source of lasting joy, peace and happiness. Sure, they bring you entertainment and so forth but if you are pegging your self esteem and so forth to material things, you are in deep ****.
All, I'm saying is that the times that I was homesick, it wasn't because I was missing an amplifier. At the end of the day, stuff is stuff. If I need a new car to make myself feel younger or more confident, that's the day that I check myself in to the boobie hatch.

I never said I didn't have toys. I also never said I didn't enjoy them. I have them because I enjoy them but if times get seriously thin, then I will get rid of them if need be. If i have the means and I can have the toys then yes, I will have them because I like having them. They don't bring happiness for me. They do provide me with a tool to be happy because I am using them to do something I love to do but I cannot honestly say that my truck brings me happiness. Driving the truck and listinening to the stereo allows me to enjoy the experience and exhileration of driving. That exhileration is what makes me happy. The truck is just a tool to get that exhileration.
madmax, you are now talking about something completely different. A bum dressed in nothing but a towel is missing his basic necessities for life like food and shelter. Those things are needed. Beyond that, the rest is just a matter of desire or convinience. Yes, life without a car or computer would be more difficult but it would still be a life of reasonably high quality. Bottom line, the measure of a man is not dictated by the number of zeros behind the first number of his paycheck or how big the stack of audio gear is or even the number of vehicles in his garage. When you start nitpicking about a guy down on his luck and running naked through the streets as not being happy and missing material goods then you are on a whole different subject.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Now, now. Don't play spin doctor on me. I only used a common slang term, if not a vernacular term, to describe a commonly held view. While the word "bum" may not be a sensitive term, it is accurate because the term "bum" is used to describe a homeless person or beggar in many areas because that is what most homeless people will do, beg. I'm not going to apologize for using it to illustrate my point but I'm also not going to allow you to try and discredit what I am saying because of the definition you are choosing to assign to the term within the context of my statement.
Zero, no one is offended by your statements. What they most likely find upsetting or unsettling about your statements is they way you are presenting your point. Yes, it is true that most here have probably not experienced the financial and materialistic poverty that you describe. The way you present that fact is confrontational. While that is entirely up to the responder on how to reply to that, it should also be noted that the subject (to which you are replying, not the thread, unfortunatly) is not about whether or not someone has lived this way but rather, could they live this way? Most will say no. All I ever said is that I don't really want to live that way but if I had to, I would and I'd make the best of it. I think that is all anyone else is really saying.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Geez man, all that to run 11's? My 83 Mustang GT ran an 11.62 @ 112 it's first time out. All I did was snag a hot engine froom a friend's junked 86 along with his 3.73's in the custom 8.8" rear he had. He had an E303 cam with GT-40P heads, ported with a ported GT-40 manifold, upper and lower. All the assorted fuel upgrades from injectors to fuel pump. I installed a crank scraper and a windage tray in the pan. I put the AC BACk on though. The 83's were light though. Lighter than the LX but all the nicey nice parts on the inside. The car was in great condition except for paint. First time out was on a set of cheater slicks and detached from sway bar. We estimated power to be about 340 at the wheels. So it was running those 11's with good traction and short 60' times but had to shift into 4th at the big end which dropped some time and MPH off.
Ahh well. Girlfriend wants an 03/04 Cobra 'vert though. I miss my fox body. It'd wipe the floor with an 03 Cobra if I had kept it and done what I wanted to it. The Lightning kinda makes up for it. If I ever get the money back in my pocket, there'll be a 600+ horsepower blown 87 Ranger with a 302 stroked to 327ci making some runs at Atco before I get kicked off!Expert Moron Extraordinaire

You want to see performance? You come to work with me any day or NIGHT and watch my magnificent **** refuel fighters at 500 miles an hour, 5 or 6 miles up in the air. Alright? I'll show you f*cking performance. NIGHTS? Sometimes if there's no moon out you don't even SEE the other airplane man, just a couple of wingtip lights and a receptacle light. 28 years now and NOBODY goes home without their gas while I'm flying the boom. NOBODY! Sometimes when I'm feeling frisky I roll over on my back and use mirrors to stick them with the boom, Annie Oakley style. Receiver pilot tells me he felt me stick them and I automatically know he's a lying car freak.
I deal in gas and I don't "love" it, I do it for money. I was going to "deal in lead" but McQueen beat me to it.

Sometimes it's good to talk about life.Of track or right on I believe it's refreshing.
Life is very difficult at times.Pressure we all deal with every single day in our own way.
We all have family, toys and things we put on our lists in the order we see fit.Judge not your peers but oneself. What you find in your pocket may not be whats in others.
People who constantly judge everyone should take some time to look in a mirror.

I dunno, I guess I just have a little different perspective these days.
I've got buddies still deployed that have to wear helmets and flak vests to take a dump because thier base gets mortared 24/7. Me, I've been lucky in that respect.
All I'm saying is that compared to what some of our troops are putting up with, this amounts to whining like little pansies. Few of us know what real sacrifice means. Think you are having a rough day? Think about what our guys in Iraq go through day in and day out.
