Thinking about retirement.

Well hell. Thought I might never make it but after **** up my back(hopefully for the last time), I've decided to pull the plug on the ol' work thing. I've worked my a$$ off for the last 40+ years and made some good investments so before I decide to take on one more job and end up in a wheelchair I'm going to cash out.

A good gambler knows when to walk away. I'm a terrible gambler by the way. I'm disappointed in myself for not being able to put in a good hard days work. My punishment is to go fishing. I call it therapy. Some call it church. Whatever works.

My uncle could have retired but decided to work instead so his wife would have better health insurance. He worked until the cancer took him some years ago. His wife is remarried. I use this life experience as an example to remind me not to get married, and to always do what's best for your own happiness.

I think I need some new stereo equipment.

Best of luck to you in your retirement. I'm 2 1/2 years into mine and I love it. Other than a bout with the c-word a year ago (which I won) life is just grand.
If you feel the need the continue to work or if the numbers aren't quite there yet perhaps you could take a less demanding job for a bit. That worked very well in my case.
Good luck to you in your new life and may you be blessed with many happy and healthy years.

I’m about 2.5 years out myself and find myself thinking about it every day. I’ve hit the point at work where I no longer enjoy it and I’m ready for the next phase of my life. Good luck to you.

I'm 7 yrs away but I'm wearing the golden handcuffs. I have the opportunity to retire next year but because of those handcuffs I'm not willing to leave. I didn't work this long to get just half my pension. Then where would I find a job that would pay like this does and still collect an amazing pension. So I'm stuck but yes the days are getting longer and longer because my retirement date is getting closer and closer but still too far to really take advantage of it. I sure hope you enjoy your new "me time"

I was 5 years away, but life had other plans so now I'm 3 years in. If you can live a good life without working, don't linger at a job/career because you'll get more _______ (whatever); money is replaceable, but 5 minutes ago is gone forever. Just remember to stay as active as possible, make lists for goals, and find reasons to stay busy.
Best of luck to you @audioluvr!
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

I retired 4 years ago. They called a year afterwards and asked me to
Come back part time. I said no thanks. My health took a nosedive
at the end of last year. Almost checked out. I've spend this year trying to
build back some strength by walking and going to the gym.

The reasons may be different for everyone (health, family, work-related stress, etc.), but it becomes pretty obvious when it is the right time. I will be retired 5 years as of March 1. Hasn't been quite the fun-fest I had hoped for, but at least I've have the time to deal with the numerous issues that have come up with those around me who have needed my help.

Been a Type 1 diabetic for 41 years. Zero complications yet and, in fact, I am the healthiest person in my immediate family by a long shot 😳, but I do hope I get to do more of what I wanna do while I still feel like doing it, at some point.

The retired people I know only wish they'd have gone earlier, not worked longer. Once you get your new retirement cash flow situation figured out, which can be intimidating at first and takes a good 6-12 months to get used to, it gets A LOT easier.

I have a little less than 5 years to my target. At that point, it will be a pension and my 401K for fun stuff. If things get $hi+ty at work, I could take a slightly lower pension 3 years from now, but I'd have an 18 month gap to get anything from 401K without penalties. I have similar golden handcuffs to what Willow mentioned.

I'm 2.5 years into the good life. Was a bit if a hard decision to pull the plug on this partly from being a bit apprehensive on being retired and starting a new life but mostly because I was still working from home and really only "working" about 50% of the time.

Still, I would rather spend my time doing what I want and not working on something that has no benefit to me other than satisfaction of a completed job.

BTW, I know where you can get all sorts of suggestions on how to spend you $$ on stereo equipment!
    :)
