Oh yea, that's the fun part!!

Since it's winter I've had the best luck with 3 button Henley shirts that pull over your head. I keep my bum arm by my side and use my good hand to pull the shirt all the way up my arm. Then I can pull it over my head and stick my good arm in at the same time. Didn't work on day one but I got the hang of it pretty quick.

Man, some gnarly stories here. I've have been fortunate not to ever have an accident/injury like those described above.
Dan, hope you recover in a reasonable time. Hopefully your house has a warm bidet to alleviate machone's concern. 😬

    Hey Dan,

I'm sorry to hear about your injury. Hopefully your recovery is under way & your back on your feet quickly. Getting old sucks...

    Thanks Phil, means a lot.

This is really tuff. Its been a long cold winter as you know and I wanting more than to go outside and wash the cars. I use it as therapy and now that has been taken from me.

I'm doing my best to hang in there but this is going to take months and just that thought alone is really bringing me down.

    Smoke more weed Dan.....

    Kidding.

It's long and hard, please do not try and rush anything along. In the end you'll just hurt your chances for a full recovery. We're not young anymore so we do not bounce back like when we were younger. It takes time.

Honey, would you come here for a second...

Nobody knows this scenario (so I hope) like me. Way back in the service, I highsided my motorcycle in the parking lot of all places. Very low speed, landed on my hands and fractured both wrists....double casted, thumbs immobilized, cast went to my fingertips and to the top of my forearms. Try buttoning a shirt or zipping up your jeans.......much less anything else....

"Lucky" for me, there were a few girls that took turns bathing me and helping me get dressed. I modified the casts, so I had use of my fingers, thumbs still immobilized. That way I could still ride my bike (don't ask me why or how, oh yeah, I was 20) and wipe my own butt, and that took patience and a fair amount of skill, every now and then, a casted thumb would rip through an unfavorable and uninvited area. Constantly "cleaning" my casts, the Drs couldn't understand why they kept falling apart and finally switched me from plaster to fiberglass :D

    Count your blessings.....

There’s a scene in the movie “Blood Simple” where a guy from Texas tells a joke about this fella who falls and breaks his hand. Then, wouldn’t you know it, he falls and breaks his other “flipper.” He says, “That’s when you know if your wife really lives ya, cuz ya can’t even wipe your own GD azzz.” Kidding aside, get well soon but don’t rush things, these guys are right you’ll just hurt your chances for a full recovery. And strict adherence to PT is critical.

    Thanks man,
its the day after surgery. It went well they did a great job from beginning to end with taking care of me. I'm very happy with at least that part.
So the issues are lots of pain and discomfort. My arm is hot in this 1/2 cast wrapped thing they put on my arm.
The other thing is how the hell do you get a shirt on? My wife ordered me a post surgery shirt that buttons on both sides.

I had 3 of those special shirts I ended up donating (since I did not want to see them again. EVER... lol), but for the few months following surgery, they were cheap at 3x the price.
Seriously, take it easy, even after you feel better and think it's OK to resume normal activity. It is going to take time, and good PT.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Way to keep moving bro. Please allow me to give you some inspiration at my own expense....I was 22 when I exited the AF and rode my Honda 900 home to SA from Tacoma WA.

Had been home a week and found it time to "clean" the bike, washed it up real shinny like, degreased the motor etc etc. Last thing to do was clean the chain using a technique I'd been using for a few years...spray can of solvent in one hand, rag in the other.....bike on it's center stand (a thing of the past now), in gear and spinning the rear tire.

As the chain slides through the rag, the solvent is spraying the chain in front of it.......got negligent and the rag got pulled into the rear sprocket with my hand in it, tearing my left thumb completely from my hand....and I'm left-handed.

Of course I went into instant shock, I remember the loud ringing in my ears and looking at my hand and thinking, you idiot, this is the worst you've ever done!!! My body reacted, thanks to the countless hours of safety training in the military I was able to quickly stop the bleeding (ever turn on a garden hose and just let it spray.....) and save my thumb.

Approximately 2 hours later, I was in surgery and went through what was called a re-implantation. The tendon was beyond repair, so I don't have movement on the last digit of my thumb, it moves at the base but that's it.

Of course, there was an adjustment period but now you can't even tell unless you compare side by
    side....
