I spent the weekend at FanX (the SLC version of Comic-Con) with my daughter. I went with her last year (reluctantly) and ended up having a great time, so we planned better this year, and I booked the Holiday Inn right across the street about 9 months ago for the weekend. That was a stroke of genius, if I do say so myself, as it gave us a place to go and relax mid day and recharge.
Mind you, this is most decidedly not “my crowd”, however - haveing spent 3 days amongst these folks, I have to say they are a very nice bunch. 120,000 people for 3 days, and I did not witness a single altercation, fight or police intervention. People say excuse me, sorry (for bumping into you), and various other niceties.
I especially enjoy celebrity row for meet & greet and more autographs for the theater room. This year we were fortunate enough to meet Danny Elfman, Michael Rooker, Beverly D’Angelo, Frank Grillo, Andrew McCarthy and Maggie Robertson (voice actor for the new Resident Evil video game).
It’s an incredibly fun time with my kiddo, and I’ll go every year she wants to, which I hope is several more…
Our Elfman pics - she went Oingo, I went film score!
Us with Frank Grillo - really cool guy:-)
And Maggie Robertson - she was an absolute treat to chat with!
The crowd is insane…

Before video games.
Well, before home use ones. Pong was out, though.
I went to the bowling alley a lot to play pinball and/or bowl sometimes, too. I was in a league one year at 16 or 17.
Space Invaders was beside the pinball machines, but I wasn't very good at it. I had a close friend who was pretty good.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

An ex-coworker of mine grew up, since being a toddler, in Russia. Even though he was born in America and his entire family was American. His branch of the family went over to Russia for about 19 years because his Dad was offered a very nice position, making a boat ton of money working about 20 hours a week max.. Anyhoo, when his family moved back prior to the Ukraine war, and he came to America for the first time, one of the first comments he said to me was that Americans are a fat society.
I asked him to elaborate on this a bit and he said that most of the people in Russia were slim. Like in the photos above. When he came home, he couldn't believe that the women he was interested in were slim pickin's....because many of them were so fat. He wasn't used to this. He said that the women over there were so much better looking.
I went home that evening and pondered on it a bit (This was before the whole MAHA movement) and remembered that when I was a kid, America was almost like how he had described Russia, when it came to obesity. As time went on, I started observing people and came to the conclusion that America in general, is a fat nation. The photos I see, the people I meet, and just general people watching at the mall or public events. It didn't used to be this way.
Sure, there were always some that were fat, maybe on the chubby side and those that were flat out obese. But my memory and the photos I see from the 60's and 70's show that this was mostly the exception and not the majority. Take a look around next time you go out and observe just how much we have changed as a society. It may shock you (like it did me).
The difference between my ex-coworker and myself? I grew up in a land where this trend gradually happened over the course of 5 decades. One tends not to notice gradual trends over that amount of time. He grew up in a different land and the change for him was instant, so he picked up on it very quickly.

All I need to do is look at old family pictures to about 1975, after that everyone blew UP the next few decades.
