I personally came across this in the Portland airport last week - if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I might not believe it…. Sometimes I really feel like we are doomed as a species.

Hard to imagine some people have never met, seen, or heard of someone with a disability who might require this room… those rooms aren’t really meant for someone who is just having a bad day or something, like the jokes are making it out to be. I agree that the lack of empathy is sad.

Sorry, but I would beg to differ. Being a wuss is not a disability.

That said, the only reason I can think of to where one might need this room, is when your plane flips over during a landing.

Someone who has a legitimate disability gets my sympathy, but the fact that they have to include the line that it’s not meant as a break room for employees tells me that the majority of visitors to this room are not those with a legitimate disability. It seems obvious that the room is mainly used by many who may need a “safe place” because they’re having a bad day, not because they have a disability.

How about no…. I’ve included a clip of the definition of “neurodivergent” below. This is a made-up term to excuse a lack of anything resembling responsible adult behavior. I poked my head into this room to see what it was about - bean bags, plush couches, dim lights and a bunch of 20-something’s playing on their phones. Disability? Please…

Seems the freaks can't respect the rules.
"No cell phone use please" is clearly written on the door.

Have friend with an adult child with severe autism. Loud noises, etc can set him off. I have sympathy for people like that, but I don’t think that’s who’s mainly using the room because it’s such a small percentage of the population that the room would seldom be used.

I don’t think you are, but I hope you’re not saying autism, ADHD, etc. aren’t real conditions. I’ve worked with and currently work with a couple of autistic students and I can guarantee it’s a very real condition. Also, I’ve worked with countless students with ADHD and I’ve seen brain scans of ADHD children and again, I can guarantee it’s very real. There are different types of ADHD and some are more debilitating than others, but most people don’t know this.

All that being said, I can easily see an autistic person benefiting from a room like this, but I don’t really think anyone with ADHD would legitimately have a need.

Now, there is no doubt that there are people with ADHD who use the condition as an excuse and a crutch. Those are likely the individuals using the room.

I’m very well aware that autism is a real condition, and I have had first hand experience with individuals involved with it.

That said, neurodivergent is what I would call a “boutique” disorder (among others) used by narcissistic youth/young adults seeking attention and special treatment. I see these people every day at work, and they use these terms to dig-in like a tick. A few examples:

    1. A 20-something kid that suffers from “random triggered anxiety”, and the only way he can go outside is with his “therapy dog”. No other employees can bring their dog to work, but this twit can because of his “disorder”.
    2. A 30 year old “neurodivergent “ woman that can’t drive in the dark because it causes her immense stress. Therefore, she gets all opening shifts, and the other employees have to pick up extra night shifts to cover for her.
    3. A 20-something girl that is taking gender switching hormones that make her legs swell, so she gets to sit on a stool while all the other employees get to stand.

So no, I’m not denying or belittling real disorders like autism or ADHD. But “neurodivergent”…?

  • Neurodivergence is not a "made-up" term. It is a descriptor for the fact that not all people are wired the same, and what is "normal" for you may not be "normal" for everyone. That people abuse the term to their advantage does not negate the reality any more than non-handicapped people parking in handicapped slots make handicaps not real. Lack of empathy is neurodivergent.

This whole culture of giving everything a label and accepting it as a crutch in life versus adapting and overcoming is tiresome.

There are real issues out there for sure but it is very abused for people using as an excuse on the daily.

That people abuse it does not make it less real. Call out the abuse but do not abuse those for whom it is a reality.
