The brief article link above outlines a bleak picture of what is actually happening with new car sales/manufacturing. Used cars on a new car lot will be the norm for the foreseeable future, unfortunately.

This will, in turn, create a shortage of new parts for cars currently on the road. A domino effect, if you will, that will definitely cascade into the unknown.

I started noticing things getting worse rather than better with new car supply a couple months ago. For example, there would normally be a couple hundred new Honda Accords in various trims at dealers within 20 miles of me pre-pandemic. Last year it was around a hundred. For the last couple of months the total has been hovering around 20 to 25. Toyota Camry inventory is around 30 to 35. Best bet seems to be to order a car and wait six months to receive it.

I have heard, and it shows in the data, that production has been prioritized for models that bring in more profit for the manufacturer. Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander inventory is around 70 to 100 near me. Still low, but it shows where the priorities are.

Honestly there has been a shortage of good used cars ever since Obama forced them to destroy the cars taken in at trade during that program to get gas guzzling smog producing dinosaurs off the roads. One of my dealers here stated that were actually destroying cars and trucks that were 5-6 yrs old. They were forced to pour something into them and run them until they seized and crush them so no parts could be used or sold to those who couldn't afford that program.

I remember needing a tail-light for our old Pontiac Sunfire, but was told I could not take one from one of those cars because after they were traded in, they were property of the Federal Government, and I could get time in prison and a fine up to 250k... :o

Man, if my job were a closer commute and I didn't carry so much, I'd be putting in more 2 wheel time on something like a Suzuki DRZ400 supermoto.

One of the cool things about more urban areas, though you'd never catch me living in one.

I had the on/off oriented variant of this several years go. Super fun, easy to throw around, but this supermoto version is so much smoother for urban assault and hooliganism.

The two local Ford and Chevy dealerships have had less than 3 new cars on their lots (both of them) for months now (pushing almost a year). At one point, both of them had none.

I have no idea how they are going to keep paying for those huge buildings/overhead/employees. Both lots are so empty, that they are spacing the vehicles out to where one vehicle basically takes up three parking spots on the lot......and the vast majority of them are used cars, not even from the same manufacturer.

Tell me about it! My oldest got his license last December and I've been sharing my car with him. Youngest will be 16 in 2 months and wants to drive immediately. Used car prices are ludicrous, so I'll be shopping for a new car for me. The boys can share my current one. Not looking forward to the buying process. Never paid MSRP for a new car, but thinking I'll be fortunate if that's all I'll have to shell out. Crazy times!

I know a lot 18 wheelers are grounded due to the shortage of ELD tracking systems
I'm talking about brand new trucks ready to roll. You have to have them as paper log books are no longer admissible

Truckers now use tracking systems instead of log books. Shortage of tracking systems are keeping new trucks off the road

I have had a new car I made a deposit on some time ago get pushed back on delivery 4 times so far.
**** thing is the other car that I want to trade in on it keeps gaining miles while losing value (relatively speaking...it is still worth almost double what I paid for it at the start of 2021).

I just hope it comes in by the time I start getting into my new job where I will have to be driving regularly again.

    I'm sure $5.xx gallon diesel isn't helping either... :open_mouth:

OK, so why don't they temporarily allow the old "swindle sheets" until these ELD systems are restored? I have a guess but figured maybe someone actually knows the answer.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Replacement parts are also taking a nosedive. If you can find NOS from 10 years or more great, otherwise the new stuff is failing within a few hundred miles of use. I follow quite a few wrench-heads on You Tube, and the parts are failing left and right. Gee, I wonder where they're made?

Sad commentary on our times. At least it’s a vehicle of good repute. Hope that proves true.

The used car market forced me to look at new vehicles for the first time in my life. Thankfully I got lucky with a good bill of health on my 2000 Tundra.

I really don't want to buy a new vehicle right now.

They seem to be running around $3K over sticker near me for most trims so I would consider that a good deal for the current times. Of course the TRD Pro in a fancy green paint scheme is usually marked up by $15K so a $49K truck is marketed at $64K. That's still likely because the used models cost about that much.

Supply of the Tacoma seems to be pretty good now.

I thought about getting a new car as the trade-in value is so high now, but I don't see a car I'm interested in in the price range I want to pay. I also don't want to pay over list for one. My 2015 car only has 45,000 miles on it so I'm going to wait. I've never kept a car as long as this one. I also don't want a SUV as we already have one and we don't need two. There aren't as many choices in cars as there use to be which is sad IMO. They want to sell SUV's and trucks.
