Cars in general have increased in size mostly due to safety.
The early 2000s Ford trucks have abysmal crash test ratings- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

Heck, a hybrid small Taco would be awesome.
Yeah, it's funny, I was just talking about this with a friend the other day - the current gen Tacomas seem like the same size as 80s/90s Ford and Chevy trucks.
Yet the Ranger doubled in size.

The IIHS has also introduced new crash tests for side impact that relate to there being more SUVs and trucks on the road and the average bumper heights going higher. Sedans don't fare well at all. Because what the insurance industry says about vehicle design that's going to drive manufacturers to make more and heavier SUVs with beefier side and door reinforcements. So much for fuel economy. Weight and costs are also going to go up and up. -
Ford and GM bailed on anything other than suv's and trucks .
The only smaller stuff will be ev. And only ev.
The slow upsizing of vehicles over the last 20 years was
do to customer demand. Try to find a regular cab truck.
Only available as a fleet model. That means white paint
cloth seats and hubcaps.
Even a Corolla has gotten big. It's like the 70's all over again.

Many of the safety regs don't apply to trucks (AFAIK).
Pickups have increased in size, again, AFAIK, mostly due to -- testosterone.
I have read (on the internet) that when pickups reached the point where manufacturers couldn't make the trucks any wider or longer (due to federal and/or state regulations) -- they simply made them taller.
I cannot fathom these huge-mongous trucks... and a 5-ish foot bed.
What's the point of having a pickup?
Oh, yeah.
Testosterone
PS Mind you, I have no truck (see what I did there?) with tradespeople and whatnot who actually need a large vehicle. It's that other gazillion schlubs who buy one to... umm... ahh... compensate for something.
PPS "Small" trucks have, and have long had, much higher gross margins than passenger cars. Thus did the US (particularly) manufacturers bail out (see what I did there?) of automobile production.

Bought the Tacoma to replace my aging Jeep Liberty. Just need 4 doors and a place to haul a 5 gallon can of gas for my mower and not have to smell it on the way home. I'll be upgrading the front bumper because the factory one looks like it would get destroyed hitting a garbage can.Gustard X26 Pro DAC

Been truck free since 2011... Have towed 2k pounds in a utility trailer with a scion xb... Most I'll ever need... Never have looked back and I don't miss it either- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.
