Dog killers - Time to get even

We live on a gravel dead-end road, total of 8 houses, very wooded. Over the hill (and not on our road) there is this bird lover that keeps birds in a real house, no humans live in it, he has caretakers feed, water and clean the "bird house". I had heard "they" poison food and leave it out for cats and dogs around the house to keep them from bothering the birds. It seems they have expanded the poisoning area.

Our family dog “Victory” was showing signs of poisoning the night of May 13 (hindsight 20/20) and then showed up dead in a neighbors driveway May 14, looked like poison to me then, blood from the mouth, and other “signs” that I won’t go into. Buried him that night.

My neighbor closest to me lost their dog on May 15, no blood, but plenty of dried foam around the mouth. Had to bury him also. (this starting to suck)

I was going to town May the 16th, and the next neighbor was out, I was telling him of the 2 dead dogs and he said he buried one of his on the 15th, Jesus this is getting creepy. My thoughts were that these 3 dogs ran together, and they all three must have ate the same stuff at the same time, and that body weight/amount that they may have ate could have been the reason they died one after the other (rather than all at the same time)

Fast forward almost a month now, neighbors from down the main road have horses, they ride them down our road as it is gravel/no traffic/ wooded and cool for the horses, their dog that runs with them while riding lost all control of his movement, then was stiff, and he died before they got him home. They took the dog to the vet, he found Strychnine in the dog, Sheriff called and took a report.

Saturday evening, yet another neighbor calls and tells my wife she needs help burying her dog, I change and go over and she has changed her mind, not tonight, she want the vet to look at the dog. Sunday it is confirmed, another Strychnine poisoning. Sheriff was called and another report filed, with a note about my dog and the other two from mid May.

We have a kind of neighborhood meeting and pull all that we have seen and heard about over the years. We have an elderly couple, in their seventies, driving a late 80’s white Ford ranger, they drive down the road and throw out meat laced with Strychnine.

Just Wednesday night I saw them creeping by the house, then two dogs dead 1 and then 3 days later.

OK getting pretty pissed about this, I was saying before that “well I let our dog run free, it’s about as much my fault as anybody’s he got poisoned” but to now think we have these people driving down our road and throwing out meat to kill dogs, not cool.

Just asking for ideas on how to handle this mess.
1. Take a couple of shotguns over to the bird house and do some eye for an eye justice.
2. Beat an old man half to death

The thing that really gets me, is my family, maybe there is nothing to fear, but hell who knows.

Sorry to lay this on you guys, but lets hear some ideas, Sheriff can’t do anything with no proof.

Having grown up with dogs all my life, that royally, well, I really can't put into words... You do have my sympathies...

The only thing I can think of would be catch them in the act or call the sheriff when you find the meat on the side of the road.

Maybe call PETA as well... Strychnine is a horrible way to kill ANY intelligent (read not bugs) creature...

You sir, have already shown far more restraint than I would have. I hope this gets successfully resolved soon, until then, let all the neighbors now to lock up their dogs...

I would get together with all the known individuals that have lost dogs or otherwise, in your immediate area, and establish a record of the deaths. Get statements from all of them and their respective vet's. Contact the State, County, Animal Control, SPCA and PETA. The State and County will want to try and pass you on, but file a complaint at another level, as you can even reach your local congressman.

I would get all of that information compiled into a hardcopy format, and physically mail it also, to the aforementioned parties.

Dont' take matters into your own hands, in respect to physical harm or property damage, as you will lose that action every time.

The law's to help you are in place, and just need to be excised in the proper way. Document everything, including every phone call...who you talked to...who was mailed...etc....everything. It will not be a couple month venture, but it is your only course of action.

Yup, that's what would have done... Either that or throw out a tire strip as the old **** is rolling down the road and then call the sheriff (After picking up said tire strip.)

Let the old bastage hange there with four flats and a car full of poisoned meat as the cop shows up.

For a more possibily more cathartic method might be a tennis racket at the house and play a little badmitton with the birdies...

Like I said, that fact that you haven't done anything yet show some impressive restrait.

From where I sit, I'd recommend Doro's path, I just don't think I could do it...

Well, if you can't prove they did it, your going to have to do it the old fashioned way. Go bird hunting. 00 buckshot should do the trick.

There's no reason for them to drive around tossing laced meat, or to poison any animals.

You say that they have folks who care for the birds? Do they live on the property? When are they there?

Get my point? Then, corner the old man and let him know what comes next...

I'm with Doc on this one. I don't have a dog anymore, but I do have pets. God forbid someone comes around effin with them, 'cause they're part of the family, too.

if you REALLY think its them, id take my 12 gauge and go hunting

and like you said, without proof, the sheriff cant do anything...
thats beyond f*cked up...killing a dog on purpose should be a felony...
im terribly sorry for your loss, i know how close people and their dogs can get, ive lost 2 in the last couple of years from natural causes and i was hurting...if it ever happened because someone poisoned them, there would be hell to pay...
just dont get caught and dont let the police read this thread...

Just talked to a friend about this issue-his suggestion, get a Sony video cam (the ones that can record in the dark) , get the guy throwing the meat out and license plate on tape, distribute all the copies to anyone affected by psycho-**** and then every single one of you sue their asses off so that they have to sell the birdhouse just to pay the lawyer bills and damage rewards, problem solved.

That said, he also stated that he would take Doc's approach if they killed his four dogs...

Damn, I'm at a loss for words. That's just horrible! It's sick! This was a member of your family. That's murder!

Call the SPCA... Get dog rescue groups involved. They operate regionally. Hire a private detective. Set up sting ops, video cameras...etc.

If they're spotted throwing meat out the window get to it before an animal does and have it tested.

Get their info from the owner of the property and pay them a visit.
Record the conversation. Inquire about their services. Complain about the animals in the neighborhood killing your birds...etc. Perhaps they'll offer you the same "type" of service or some "advice".

Follow them everytime you see them, I mean every time. They probably have a schedule.

If all else fails, and you can't get evidence, give them a flat everytime they visit the neighborhood. Escalate your activity.

I'm non-violent. If my dog was poisoned, and I thought I knew who did it and couldn't prove it, at the risk of going to jail, I'd beat their asses... regardless of how old they were.

Damn, if I lived near ya I'd be there tomorrow.

I am so sorry to hear of this you have my sympathy. I just can't think of what they would do if a child touched it and then gotten sick. I say the skatter gun leaves no traceable prints behind or what do those birds eat and still beat both their a$$es 7 ways to Sunday.

Remember #00 buckshot has only nine .33-caliber pellets in a standard 2-3/4" load. Too easy to miss vitals on tiny targets.

Believe me, I've cut pheasants in half at close range with #6 birdshot and a mod choke - it's really gross.

Russ, we have a golden retriever and a chocolate lab and I would have to beat somebodys **** over either one of them if they harmed them in any way. That was a very handsome pup you had and I am deeply sorry for the loss of your companion. I know I would miss ours badly as they are just like kids to us.

I don't think you should have everthought such a thing. I had a 125# white German Shepherd (Sandy) and I let her run 24/7 and never tied her up. The neighbors (when she would go visiting VERY rarely) just loved her as I did. If anybody had a problem with your dog they should have asked you to keep her in your yard but I find as long as your dog is good tempered (as mine was) nieghbors usally don't mind.
She passed 2yrs ago and I miss her still. She always greated me at my trucks door when I came home like clock work, tail wagging and just plane happy to see me as I was her.

God I miss her!!!

I'm sorry for your and all the other dog owners losses Hoosier.

While I understand the urge to go blasting, that would just get you into trouble.

Organize your neighbors with video cams and set up a neighborhood watch to record everything get proof, including the poisoned meat.

Then call in the law, the tv crews, and sue their asses off. have that damned house condemned & torn down! Don't forget to keep track of the people who take care of the birds.

You all might lose some time and some sleep, but hopefully you'll get the proof you need & won't lose anymore dogs.

They are both black labs. They are both hunting dogs. The one on the left is the most experienced, intelligent, and skilled upland dog I have EVER hunted behind. He hails from Kansas pointing blood lines and locks up on birds like a springer.

He's getting old now, and I have to take it easy on him. In years past he had virtually unlimited endurance and an iron will. I will miss him dearly, and when I bury him it will be on MY terms. Not on the terms dictated by some sick fuc$ who gets his rocks off thinking his goddamn tweety birds somehow are a higher form of life than man's best friend.

Video tape is your best friend here. Hang out, be friendly, don't do anything stupid and document the hell out of it. After the authorities get done with their job then, and only then, you can get revenge in your own way. (Later on when they have no clue who or why...)

So that's what the hell you look like! Always wondered!

Edit: Burn the place down or whatever, just make sure you cannnot be caught. Just don't do anything half cocked, they will nail you right away and even given the circumstances will have no sympathy for you. That's just the way it is.

Terrible just thinking about something so vile, sitting here rubbing on ole Booker, my beagle. Did the vet suggest anything or anybody to look into things? It is a crime, if the local law blew you off its cuz their not really doing their job. I agree with many of the others, you need to get organized.

You mentioned your family. Don't do anything that could cause them pain, ie, something that could land you in the slammer.

As said above->

Call the local human society, govt agencies.

More importantly, find every animal right activist group, PETA, ANYONE. Get the 'wackos' involved, they will make a STINK over it.

Next, call the local news stations - they all have 'investigative reporters' that look for dirty laundry like this. They want to be 'live and local, late breaking etc'.

That will get prime time news coverage, which will result in BIG time exposure, and probably get a lot of other people 'with your cause'.

It DOES involve your young boys. What's to stop them from picking up a piece of that meat? And just think afterwards, how many times a day do young boys pick their nose, and stick their fingers in their eyes, mouth etc. It's a REAL danger, don't think twice about that.

I hate reading **** like this, and I'm sorry it happened to you. I mean that, keep a cool head, and put the hurt on the old ****, legally.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss Hoosier, and your neighbours losses. Get those ****. I dont know what I would do in your situation, but it would probably involve a baseball bat.:mad:

this was one of my dogs that died a couple of years ago, this picture was taken a few weeks before she died
she was 12 years old and one of my best friends
she was VERY intelligent and while i never took her hunting, she would go swimming with me at our place on the river near by
we had a ladder that we had stuck in the water to get on our pier with about 7 rungs sticking out from the water and she would routinely follow me up the ladder to get up the pier all by herself
i loved her and still miss her
i have no clue what i would do in your situation
for you to have that much restraint is unbelieveable to me, but probably turn out for the better
whatever you decide to do, get those inhumane ****
you have to be a sick f*ck to do that to a dog...
again, i am terribly sorry for your loss and you have my best wishes
