oh, yeah, baby! -- field coils are where it's at!
I know some guys...

I suppose you could think of electrostatic speakers as "field coil" speakers when compared with "magnetic planar" type speakers.
-
Well -- not really... but, I mean, you know that.
(EDIT: But -- yeah -- I do see your point, and take it! )
Electrostatic transducers use a high voltage DC field (thousands of volts) with very little current. Like Dogbert -- I mean, Thor, Dog of Thunder.
https://dilbert.com/strip/1990-01-10
Electromagnets (field coils) are energized with fairly low voltage DC (tens of volts) but usually with significant amounts of current.
In the old days, the loudspeaker field coil often served double-duty as a power supply choke (inductor), too!
There are - arguably - real advantages to using electromagnets instead of permanent magnets... although electrical efficiency isn't one of those advantages.
I will confess that I cannot help but think about scrap metal yards when I think about electromagnets.

Odd Job likes electromagnets in his line of work.

I had a couple of CD cleaners over the years. The best was the discwasher. I bought a dozen of the replacement pads and still have a few. Just wish I had the spray.

Wonder how well that worked?Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously.

Since I had dug this up for something else, might as well drop it here, too.
The Esquire is a pretty interesting little loudspeaker -- a lot like the Klipsch Heresy (small-ish sealed box, high sensitivity, good dynamics -- and the same tweeter!) but, unlike the Heresy, a much, much better sounding midrange driver (direct radiator instead of horn/compression driver).
