Just for fun, can you guess which one is stainless steel? Maybe state the reason for your choice too.

No trick here, one of them used to look like the spike at the right.

Middle one would be my answer. Machining is cleaner. More uniform tip.

They're all the same, the one on the right is the original finish, the other two are just different states of polish.

I'd say the one on the left is the same as the one on the right. They all could be stainless as there are different grades but usually the "shinier" ones are chrome plated like the middle as opposed to a chromium alloy (stainless). :D

The one on the left. I see sanding marks on it so the nickel finish may have been removed.

So the middle, or the left one, used to be like the one on the right? 50/50 chance, I reckon.

    good ol' homophones ;)

Out of deference to the original topic -- this reminds me of my son, in his paintball days, painstakingly polishing satin-finished aluminum gun marker barrels (and sometimes other parts) with "Mother's Mag Wheel Polish" and a Dremel. :#

    Now that you mention it...
I meant to say finish is cleaner, not the machining. I think you could be right Ivan, different states of polish.

I would guess the one in the middle, the tip looks identical to the one on the right.

Ok, time to reveal the SS spike. It's the one on the left. Thanks to all who posted their guess.

The spike on the right is a plated brass Dayton in satin nickel. The middle one started out like the right. I mounted it in a drill chuck and at low speed used 400 grit wet/dry followed by 600, 800 and 1000. The purpose was to try to emulate some stainless steel spikes I have that are no longer available. I realized the Dayton spikes are the same shape/size, so I thought it was worth a try. They are now anchoring a speaker stand for a subwoofer, which sits right next to a speaker stand with the stainless steel spikes. Success!

Probably because it has been used before

No, SS is considerably harder than brass. The SS spikes came with extremely sharp tips unlike the slighty rounded over tips on the Daytons. The slightly deformed tip on the SS spike in the pic is the result of being rammed through carpet onto concrete.
