I have a few B&K preamps laying around but I think they are REF30's and one REF31 upgraded. I'll have to check.

    Nice collection Dan.
What did the upgrade do for the Ref 30?

    Thanks ,
God I don't remember it's been so long. I have the new Ref 31 manual so I could read though it but I remember it was a hardware and software upgrade. I think like DTS and a new chip set.

    Ah, interesting.
I thought I remembered reading somewhere that they were upgradeable, as a feature benefit, but none of mine are anything but stock, possibly firmware.

You have to send them back to B&K and they re worked the entire unit. They went over all aspects of the unit and then performed the upgrade. It was a pretty good deal as it was a few hundred dollars to perform and usually took a week or 2 at most.

I hooked up the Ref31 today to make sure it still works. It works wonderfully. Sounds great clear and the volume knob on the front is so damn smooth. GOD I miss B&k, what incredibly good gear. I wish they would come back I would be first in line to get all new B&K gear. It was my very favorite back in the day.
Unless you really need it , I'm all cool with hanging on to it. It's so wonderful.

I had a Ref 20 I wish I had kept. Reason I let it go was because I could not stream to it. At the time the only thing I could do was spin discs from the Denon 2910 to it. Now that I have a IFI Blue Zen, Marantz ud7007 and a turntable with IFI phono, I wish I had kept it. Would love to compare it to the Anthem Pre 2L tube pre amp now.

Does anything in this obsession ever work out??????

Check with this guy. He sells so much stuff here, he may still have this one in his back room and just not know it. :)

Is $250 a good deal for a Ref 50? One local to me. I'm not interested in it but if you are we might make something work.

If it's in good condition comes with manual and possibly the remote then it's totally worth that price.
I think what many people might miss here on these Reference Theater Preamps is they are built to the exact same high quality as the 2 channel models. They are hand built and top notch. Think about getting a superior high quality used preamp for $250 that sounds as good as just about anything on the market up to a price point.
