Ok stopped in at best buy yesterday as I ordered some Audioquest OTG cables for my latest renewed audio obsession, always have Magnolia deliver to the best buy store so UPS wont loose or manhandle them. I see the big huge 8K section and say to my self oh no not again.

I mean I have finally recouped from putting 4k sytems in a couple of rooms happy as can be and now this. I was mesmerized by the 65 inch 8k displays. The kid tells me sir you can have one of these set up and ready for the big game next weekend, along with taking advantage of the sale that ends well it ends today.

I decided to walk away shaking my head and figure 2 channel and headphone rigs that's where it's at. I got home in looked at my outdated man cave 4k rig put in the recent RNR hof inductees Doobie Brothers live at the Beacon Blu Ray saying convincing myself that the 8K revolution will just have to pass me by. So who's climbing aboard on the latest Home entertainment craze?

I have seen it and it is amazing. With that said, until 8K is mainstream and 90% of new movies are made this way? Why bother to pay such prices for only being able to watch 5% of programming on it?

That's akin to me to buying a new Corvette with the damned thing governed to 5% of engine output. Why bother?

Fixed to reflect my current situation LOL
I just got on board the 4k train last summer, it's still new enough to me that I am not
planning on moving up until they stop working. I do have one 1080p set left in the den, but that gets so little use it's not even worth getting a 4k to replace it. Maybe once the cave is done?
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Just this year I updated to 4K UHD tv, just got a 4K UHD blu-ray player. Buying just 4K blu-ray movies I’m Done with upgrades. 8K 12k what ever won’t see a dime of my money.

    Got me there, Bruce.

The picture is outstanding, though. From 10 feet away, it looks like a professional Kodak Photograph that just so happens to move. Words are hard to describe just how sharp and in focus it is.

Now, that looks wonderful while watching a nature documentary or a parade (for example) shot in 8K but I'm not sure that I want to see individual skin cell imperfections or ear hair on a newscaster.

After I watched one for a bit at a local audio GTG, I went home and my 4K TV looked like I had just went from Hi-Def back to a tubed TV. It's that much of a difference.

Thanks you made it easy for me. I agree with you 100% 5 years from now we will be checking out the 12K displays shaking our heads as we just finished off paying for the outdated 8k technology. It's crazy that Corvette purchase would be better well served.

One thing I forgot to ask but I'm sure its necessary. I'm assuming the AVRs I have that pass 4K will have to be replaced with AVRs that will pass 8k wow this could get expensive. I'm not giving in but me and the missus are heading to Costco for a few items I'm going to avoid the 8ks displayed there but will report back should they lure me in.

No 8k content yet. Heck there is very little 4k content except for a few sports games. I'll be buying a 4k TV soon and that is where I stop. They've been filming in 8k for a few years and downconverting to 4k for the market. 5g bandwidth is supposed to help get 8k jump started.... We'll see.

Are you old enough to have "had" to use a slide rule? Calculators and computer's (mainframes using punch cards for data input) were most likely in widespread use by the time you were in college. I remember having to punch cards for input when using Fortran. That was no fun! Then we got Lotus 123(PC) and Jazz (Mac), wow what a relief.

Russ, I just took her out to Ruby's bike shop for a cold one and lunch, after a couple of pints, I talked her into going to best buy and checking them out. She was floored amazed and said I want dis until of course she seen the $6700 dollar price tag, then she said let's go check out the PS4 games instead. I tell you what though they had a 65" LG OLED tv that gave that 8K a run for the money, that being said we picked up a PS4 game and went about our way.

IMO/IME, that had to have been the source. The difference between the two (to me) was drastic. If they were not so much $$$, 8K would be in my house today...

...but I will defer to the aforementioned by myself.

Yes (barely) -- indeed, I have, and have had, several slide rules.
We had to learn to use a slide rule, in fact, in high school Physics class. Another memory from those days (mid 1970s) -- the Physics classroom at my high school had one of those monstrous (ca. 6 feet long) demonstration slide rules mounted on the front lecture bench. :)

And, even (early on) in grad school, I did some work with FORTRAN, punch cards and all. I like(d) FORTRAN FORmulaTRANslator), it was lean and mean.

I have a Sama & Etani circular slide rule up in the hifi room. I lost the one I had in school :( but my son (the maths professor) got me a replacement from eBAY a few years back. The only problem with it is that the vinyl sleeve its in is imprinted MONSANTO. :p

My aforementioned HS Physics (and also Chem) teacher had one of them in a sleeve that was emblazoned "PHYSICS IS PHUN" :) The thing I like about the little Sami & Etani pocket circular slide rules: they have this little card in them that contains all of mankind's knowledge (in fairly fine print) :) If there were a world-wide conflagration, I am pretty sure some nerdy guy with one of these could recreate civilization by sheer wit and force of will... and get the hot survivor chicks to mate with him and repopulate the world.

Wait, did I just type that? ;)

My high school Physics classrooms also had the large slide rules. Many of my family members went into the sciences. I was always very interested in the sciences. In retrospect you sometimes wonder, what if I had taken that path...? Guess it wasn't meant to be. No real regrets though.

Not any time soon. Just bought a 4k. When I buy 8k, no doubt 3d
Space projection will be the hot ticket.

Just went 4K this past summer. My other tv is still a dated Samsung ToC circa 2007 and still going strong. (Even though I did my own cap replacement a couple years ago on the power side)

Maybe when I finish the basement, I’ll think about it, but I’m a few years away from that one.

I think we are not ready for 8k. Also we are not ready for 4k. Once broadcasters, TV services and Sporting events are all in 4k then we will be ready for 4k.
8k is just another way to sell you new stuff. There is absolutely no need for a 8k Tv especially anything under 85 inches. 4k at a reasonable distance vs the screen size you will not be able to tell the difference.
Resolution isn't what you want to pursue if your looking for a better TV, you want HDR and Dolby Vision. You could have if it existed a 1080p TV of high quality running HDR and that will look like 4k or even 8k in todays high quality terms.

Nope. I wouldn't consider an 8K TV until the newest Xbox has enough horsepower to natively render games in 8K and that is a long ways down the road. The bandwidth required for streaming 8K video is also astronomical. A lot of other things need to move further on before it matters to anyone but the "gotta have the latest and greatest no matter the cost" people.
