It's that time of year again

Just wanted to point out to y'all that in a week or so, we're gonna start seeing an influx of "new members" signing up.

They will be aggravating at times, they will need to be coddled and hand-held through various issues they need help with and some with be petulant, entitled jerks with big mouths and bad attitudes. Unlike years past, we can't expect Polk Audio to take on the burden of CS anymore as CS has obviously slipped off drastically from what we once knew.

So people are gonna come here and ask for help and probably say some really stupid **** too.

So advice to you. If you can't help without being a jerk then just steer clear of these folks and their threads. Just don't talk to them at all.

More advice. If you can't offer help without taking cheap shots at other members or topics and trying to goad folks into a fight under the guise of helping a n00b, just steer clear of those threads. Just don't post because backhanded help is unneeded and you're just a jerk for trying to post that **** too.

Lastly, unless you can back up your "help" with actual, corroborated facts, like a link to a cited work or a manufacturer's white paper on a product or something equally verifiable, you have two choices. One, shut your pie hole and don't talk out your butt if you can't back it up. It's really pretty simple. OR, you can take option two, open your piehole and spew your oral excrement from your verbal diarrhea hole and take the berating you will get for being about as wrong as wrong can get. My advice? Take option 1 and if you don't know or aren't sure if you actually know, just STFU and let someone else handle it.

Every year this place turns into a free-for-all on snarky barbs, arrogant superiority and petty fights. All because people can't act like adults.

Let's try something different this year and place nice together. Howboutit?

You're point is well taken, just thought a more benign approach should have been used first. Not butthurt at all, I agree totally. The olive branch should be extended first...and not to beat them with either.

Well I can say that I joined CP about this time about 2 years ago! All starry eyed, drooling like a pug at all the wonderful setups and knowledge! I had no idea of what the world of audio was like out there!

Sure I got spanked a bit early on, but don't we all in life? Right or wrong, I can easily understand how someone flies in, gets spanked, never to be heard from again.

But, I'm happy to have endured!

I do like to take the approach of welcoming any new member, first and foremost. Then help guide them to the experts (not me), with their questions and/or aspirations. Make them feel welcome, and let them know its ok to ask newbie questions. Not so long ago I was there!

Any setup is fixable or can be upgraded. Newbies come from all walks of life. Sure there will be different paths, and some roads may be longer than others, but that's the fun. A journey, after all. Just my thoughts.

You got spanked Dave? Did you try to bi-amp? Use RTi series for 2ch? Say cables don't matter? If so, I missed all that fun.

Lol! For sure! Let me see, running an equalizer with the rock-n-roll smile settings, placing the SDA 2B's in the corners of the room, necroposting a few threads (including a SRT set that was FS over a year old), use of syntax and grammar, etc!

I could go on, but it is too painful lol! All in good fun!

Oh yes, still on the bi-amp journey. No spanking there, just great advice!

OMG that put a smile to my face! Wow what a long road it has been!

Those 1C's BTW, still not completed, but I have all the parts, new XO's from our very own @westmassguy using @gimpod boards, and new zebrawood side panels, hurricane nuts installed, sealed cabinets, etc.

My thread is somewhere here! Been a while since my last update!

Still probably gonna go with the solid top panels! Lol!

Yep i took you quip about the olive branch being extended to the folks
@Jstas was referring to. I understood it I thought.

    Jstas Posts: 14,842
Extending an "olive branch" would imply that I have a quarrel with those I am speaking to. Extending an olive branch is a peace offering to call a truce and bury the hatchet.

    I'm not doing that.

I am recognizing that there's a significant number of people who will behave poorly, year and after year after year, towards n00bs and all it does is make this a place I don't really want to be. Drama sucks. I have enough of it in my real life, I don't want it here.

So extending an olive branch is a bunch of bullhockey.

Lastly, I am not posting profanity laced statements. You can't use certain words here that aren't even profanity. They get censored anyway and honestly, I'm tired of keeping track just to avoid the "quad star" treatment for typing f a r t and the judging that comes with it.

Beyond that, though, if my statements don't apply to you then why get so bent out of shape? If feelings matter so much why do n00bs get little consideration to the affect? So I use strong language and am brutally honest in regards to how some folks treat others. I'm having a really hard time being concerned about feelings here when I see people who are normally timid, complacent and non-confrontational in person being absolute jerks online and then blaming everyone but themselves when their keyboard commando behavior creates a storm that hits the fan.

So, preach to someone else. I'm not offended here in the least. As lightman already said, no one likes me. I'm cool with that. It's not exactly no one, though, there's a few who do. Many more that don't, though and I really don't care. But I'm not trying to attract bees here. I'm being confrontational on purpose. There's a problem that needs to be addressed. We've tried to address it in the past to no avail. So maybe a different tack that uses less tact because, honestly, it gets attention and gets people talking and aware. I'm more disappointed and put off by the fact that I have to tell grown men and women to behave themselves than having people say or think disparaging things about me for it.

I've been coming here for almost 25 years now. Hell, I signed up because I got a set of speakers for a Christmas present way back in 1996 (Polk Audio EX402's for my pickup truck) and it was hostile to n00bs then too. But I'm a salty jerk from New Jersey and hung around anyway, despite it. But after almost 25 years of seeing the same pattern over and over again every year, I'm kind of sick of it and I'm going to tell you all in no uncertain terms that it needs to change 'cause it's not doing any good.

Preach? Bent out of shape? Lot of hyperbole there.

My posts have been a paragraph, at most, so preaching isn't anywhere close to truthful.

I've exhibited no signs of being "bent out of shape." I simply said that no one likes being talked to the way you started out your post.

Olive branch was a joke, meaning be peaceful, don't use the branch to beat them with. Maybe you can say I was being metaphorical.

I guess the question should be why are you getting so bent out of shape? I agreed with your post.

    So some take-aways.

I agree with John sometimes newbies get accosted right off the bat, and are never to be seen again. Good or bad, some folks only come here for a specific question, get it answered or not, and poof they're gone. That is the way of the forum world.

But John - You're initial post, when you got to the advice part, was a bit, IMO, sledge hammer like. Even the curmudgeons here will not respond well. Suggestions are always welcome, not advising them to just "not post" to any of the newbies. Just my thoughts.

So put yourselves back when you first joined CP. Did you get hit really hard on the first post? Did you lurk around for a long time? A bit apprehensive when making the first post or discussion? My first post was easy. Had to deal with speaker cabinets, woodworking, of which I am familiar. I would not have dared to ask a question about electronics!

So I can see that others, like me a few years ago, coming here, wanting to learn and get into the game, looking for advice. But to let he world know that you don't know Shinola about audio is a bit uncomfortable. Yep I'm tough, been around the block a few times, can endure, because this place is a treasure trove of information. I wanted to learn. So I stayed and found out there is lot's more than just information. In all fairness I did not get spanked that hard!

Others, not like me, I imagine can get offended. Advice like "you're doing it all wrong" or suggesting "throw away your rig away and start here" are examples of what would cause someone to never come back.

Paraphrasing used in quotes for the record.

I've seen it on other forums too. Newbies wanting to ask a question and the summation of responses tell the newbie the audacity of how could they even ask that question. In other words, you are not welcome here.

Do we really want that? I think not.

Newbies, after some time, with some questions asked, answers given, mistakes made, some laughs, banter, sorrow, you name it, occurs. It's called building a relationship. Once I know you, I feel more comfortable ribbing you a bit. And do I get it back! So now I'm hooked. Sometimes I even have to be reminded that I may have crossed the line. That's ok, I'm here to stay, always learning, and wanting to spend time with my family.

Now if we can get some soundbar experts willing to step up, that would help!

It didn't come off that way to me.

    Sorry for ruffling your feathers.

My first post here was when it was vBulletin, I think? Whatever it was in the first iteration before Micah moved it to phpBB in 2001. I posted about having a set of EX402's in my '87 Ranger and the first response was "Why'd you put them in that pile of ****?"

Whether that was someone trolling or not, I don't know but it took 3 weeks for another post to appear and I just lost interested. Came back around 2000 but never logged in and my account got dumped in 2001 for inactivity when the forum software changed. So I had to sign up with a new account.

I don't really care if my initial post is harsh. The way I'm coming off is how people who **** all over n00bs come off.

Not just in the bad advice you mentioned but also in the irrelevant advice. George Grand put it best many years ago:
Is it me, or is too much of this happening on this forum:

Person #1 - "Hi my name is Codfish and I currently have a Toyota. I'm THINKING of buying a Lexus but it might be a financial stretch. Does anybody have any experience with these? Thanks."

Person #2 - "Hey, try the Rolls-Royce. I read that they're okay, but expensive."

    Is this HELPING anyone?
