I think I read that model had an issue with randomly freezing up. Sony is supposed to be working on a firmware update, unless I got the model confused.

For what it’s worth, I really liked the Panasonic 820. Picture quality was outstanding. For some reason it wouldn’t work with my particular tv, tried 3 of them. Ended up going with the Pioneer LX 500. Still think the Panasonic had a better picture, but the Pioneer is no slacker.

Does it need to play blu ray? You can get one of those for like $50 and then buy an older denon dvd-2910 pr 3910 or one of the universal pioneers. Heck I have a pioneer that I got for about $70 shipped on fleabay...

Yeah, what @rooftop59 said: Music, video, or both?

As y'all may or may not have noticed :p I've been using this abomination lately (100% for music discs) -- it plays both SACD and DVD-A (although not, apparently, at full resolution)... and -- best of all -- it was a freebie :)

I have the Denon DVD-2910 and it sounds very good but it did develop the issue where it wouldn't read many redbook CD's. I replaced the pickup and it is better but I need to align it better.

I also have the Denon DBP-1611UD and the Marantz UD5005. These units are identical internally. These both play blu-ray.

I would say the DVD-2910 has better analog output but I don' t believe it will send SACD over the HDMI. The Denon DBP-1611UD and the Marantz UD5005 do. If you are into mods, the DVD-2910 has a following on DIYAudio.com to improve the analog out and other stuff.

Are the blu rays 4K? That really limits you options! Good luck!

I think I have 1 4k movie but it's a 4k tv so... I wonder if they make 4k audio? That would rule!

2910 will not do SACD or DVD-A over HDMI it will do the Denon-link which is all digital if you have the appropriate Denon receiver. I LOVED my 3805 with the 3910 and the Denon-link. it was ahead of its time back in the day.

Even if it doesn't maybe I can grab it for my buddy that I am trying to kick down the rabbit hole? he disappointed me though, he had me order cherry 703's for him. He ain't the unibummer but he doesn't do tech lol. I was gonna order him a bunch more stuff to get him started and sing the blues about how he has to pay me for the stuff.

It (the no HDMI output for the hires audio formats) is/was an anti-piracy feature as I understand it. :#

yes was not anymore. Sony for years refused to let all the manufactures implement it, but now there are against the analog side more than ever it seems. It your player had component video input and output many were disabled with a firmware upgrade.

Denon-link was 100% digital and all bass management was kept in the digital realm.

not surprising. Analog was the last bastion of piracy (not that I am advocating bootlegging -- I am just saying).

Ended up getting it for $199.00. So far so good, it upscales video nicely and the sound is better than the little Sony player that I was running. This one is physically much more substantial than the other Sony plsyers that I have had, those were built like cheap toys. I have it in a decent temporary system so when I have time I will listen to some SACD's etc. Aand see how it does. Somewhere down the road this will be a movie player reserving my Oppo or Cambridge for just music.???

Want I2S (PCM) and SACD (DSD) out of a CD player? Just get a data sheet for the DAC chip and find the appropriate DAC chip outputs. Solder some wires to them....best to keep them very short to the DAC. This is on a Denon 3910 with PCM1796 chip. BCK, LRCK, DATA and ground. SCK for SACD bit clock.

With the 1796 chip, DSD used some of the I2S circuits so I had to add a switch to rear of Denon to switch between exporting PCM and SACD. SACD has R and L channel separate where PCM has R&L combined.

Agree with Rich. I tapped the DSD in the DVD-5910 and output to the DAC I built. I haven't heard a better DSD (SACD) player/DAC combo. The DVD-5910 (and 3910) won't do Blu-Ray of course, so it's not a true universal player, but maybe get an OPPO 205 player for that?? I have an OPPO but it's still sealed in the box awaiting to be released. It uses the same DAC board in the DAC I built, so I figure it can wait.

Tap your player and send it to a DAC for PCM and DSD. Then use the rest for video.

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....
