News to me, that was not discussed.
Studying my SDA crossover photo there are no switches or jumpers on the board.Political Correctness'.........defined

I don't see it either. The only thing I can think of is swapping wires in the top right corner of the board...The Gear... The angled first and second arrays are then are then fed signals from a new crossover which is optionally configurable using switches or jumpers such that either (e.g., left baffle or right baffle) array can be selected by the user or installer as being (a) the main array or (b) SDA/effects array by rerouting signals through a switch or jumper block.
Does this mean that we get to determine which driver performs the SDA function?
That's interesting John. I was reading in the text where they mention retailers, distributors, etc., not really preferring to stock L and R speakers! Well that does make sense as looking at the backs i do not recall seeing left or right on the label.

Since there is no L/R speaker, I wonder if this means they are just stereo speakers without the interconnect cable? If so then I wonder how they sound when used like other speakers. If they sound great as stereo speakers then Polk does have a winner with these speakers.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

The L800 speakers are identified as being sold as Left or Right speakers come November. I think in the video Stu also said the larger crossover board goes in one of the speakers but not both. Patent application specifics don't always translate to real world product when possible user options being exercised or not are involved. In the case of the patent filing, Polk is actually the end user rather than individual customers being the end user of the engineering design.
-
So it seems as if the L800's are exclusively for 2 channel setups? Could anyone see any usage for dual purpose setups (2 channel & multi-channel surround sound, replacing primary L and R speakers)? Or would the introduction of additional audio from non-L800 channels nullify the "opposite channel dampening effect" in a way that degrades perception and enjoyment of multi-channel surround sound for movies? My first thought is that the SDA effect would be degraded but not nullified, as the L800's would still be an intact subset of the wave patterns. Does this make sense?

I can tell you from the old school 1.2TL perspective.. I have yet to hear a better speaker for HT than the big girls. My in-walls are voice matched to them as well. The Gear... There's an Atmos module option that drops into the top of either the L800 or L600, so yes they are both intended for home theater use. Older SDA speakers also make good home theater speakers with a center channel. Automatic setup features in a receiver or AV preamp may or may not get confused with the SDA function though. Haven't seen anything mentioned about that yet. There may be some special auto setup considerations for systems like Audyssey that'll be covered later. Or maybe they've been designed around that already.
-
One point is you DO NOT need Atmos for excellent home theater. I don’t even use my sub anymore for HT.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

Yep I overlooked it on my phone. I was looking down at the L800 label instead it was right there between the binding post's. I guess I thought it would be like the older SDA's near the model number.
As Doc would say. ....Derp!

I'm 99% certain that each speaker has its own crossover board. That smaller crossover in the pic probably goes to the bass section.
I think Polk was smart with the design because in the event of a separated pair, it looks like you could just swap the way it is hooked up internally.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
