I just realized I forgot a pretty important ship.

Way back in 1998-1999, I was stuck on this project that we built an entirely new building for that had a mock up in it of the bridge, CIC and weapons control spaces. We used that space to flesh out a fully operational ship control system for our bid for DD21. We ended up losing the bid to another company that didn't even meet the basic bid requirements and actually filed protest as the competing company used our equipment to demonstrate their bid proposal which was a severe ethical conflict of interest. But, due to excessively strong lobbying by Joe Liebermann and his cronies at the time, that was over-looked, we lost and we left holding the bag.

I actually delivered that bid system to the NAVSEC offices at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dhalgren, VA. Myself and 3 other engineers along with our division VP and pres. as well as our PEO TSC commander and our baseline manager we sent down with a Ryder truck and the bid system carefully packed. I got to meet the joint chiefs of staff as well as the Secretary of the Navy at the time. It was pretty cool to

That eventually turned in to DDG1000, the U.S.S. Zumwalt

    800px-USS_Zumwalt_%28DDG-1000%29_at_night.jpg

That was a whole fiasco where the winning contractor was in way over their head and WAY over budget and we were ordered under the condition of national security to step in and help them build the ship we were supposed to build. That ended up with the Zumwalt class of destroyers.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zumwalt-class_destroyer#Ships_in_class

The National Security Cutter, USCGC 750 I posted earlier, that ship's control systems were designed off of the original DD21 bid proposal and one of my first tasks on the CG projects was to rebuild the bridge mock-up with the new control systems for our "proof of concept" lab and later, the training lab.

Working in heatlhcare on data security isn't nearly as fancy but it's been way more stable and pays over 100% better than doing defense work. Defense work is super cool and tons of fun but it's hard to get ahead in it and it doesn't pay quite the same number of bills, especially when you are dealing with a divorce.

I worked on a project for the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dhalgren. We outfitted several assets, joined a MEU out of Camp Lejeune and headed out for land/sea trials. It was fun and interesting.

Used to drive (ride) by that facility often in my yoot, on our way down to North Carolina from B-more. My father didn't like the DC traffic, so we went down MD route 3 to US 301, across the Potomac on the (no kidding) "Nice Bridge" (named for Harry W. Nice) into VA, an then on to I-95 north of Richmond via VA route 207. :)
