Maybe something less ignitable than wood for a base, like some ceramic tiles?

I got a chuckle out of that ...

Well what do you know? Taking a little break, in the office, thinking about the cassette deck behind me for weeks, and well, it fits nicely on the desk now!

My office nearfield setup. Thus far, I am very happy with this transformation.

    fzpk3h4zs3sh.png

I have to chuckle a bit, back when I first joined CP, I had nothing but a 2.1 setup connected directly to the computer with Logitech speakers! I thought at the time, partially just being ignorant, that "it's a computer system" and never really thought about the opportunities.

Moving to the Marantz CD-1 and AMP-1 at the time was a huge upgrade obviously, paired with the Acoustic Technologies FR towers, but since I got bit by the tube pre-amp bug, I wanted to integrate the EAR 834L into this rig. This was going to be the foundation of my new system.

I like the idea of monoblocks. For me something about symmetry in a rig gives it a great look! As come to be expected here on CP, @kharp1 generously allowed me to acquire his PASS amps, again with the condition that if I ever do part with em, they must stay in the CP family. Well Kerry, I am liking this little heaters so much I don't think they'll be leaving anytime soon! It's amazing to me that such a relatively inexpensive and simple device can generate such great output. They power the speakers with ease, and compliment the other components, which were an order of magnitude more expensive, proudly. I'm a class A believer!

I love the NS Intenso DAC! Was not being used at the moment, as the big rig downstairs now has it's bigger brother, the Excelsio. As expected, a huge improvement over the Marantz AMP-1 with it's built in DAC. Much more image detail and clarity when compared to the Marantz.

Likewise with the EAR Acute CD player.

When I got everything hooked up for the maiden voyage, the improvements were profound. Image detail, and soundstage was dramatically improved. The EAR really brought the 3-D image to life. Now while sitting at my desk, I am completely enveloped with music! Speakers disappear. In a word, wow!

Of course, detail was improved, which was expected. But to the extent of which surprised me, highs were extended, and just overall detail dramatically improved. Mids and vocals were just clearer, and more of it. Even with bass heavy music, I could notice the subtleties of cymbals and other slight percussion instruments, or vocals as never before.

Oh but the bass! I immediately had to reduce the gain on the subwoofer, and re-tune it to blend with the new setup. Without the sub, the improvement of bass performance was simply amazing. Now dialed back in, the SVS amazingly takes a lesser role, but blends well and compliments the speakers nicely.

With my new monitor riser, I was able to push back all of the components back a bit, and then re-position the speakers back about 6 inches, which also improved the soundstage.

The office rig transformation has been a fun and very rewarding experience. Thanks to a lot of you for your help, guidance, and generosity. Finally, what to do with the Marantz pair? Hmmm.
