Salks in the house !

Was ‘kinda fantasizing and toying with the idea of buying a new pair of Salk speakers - in my wildest dreams ..... wife would never go for it - right ?

Was thinking the Song 3’s or Song Tower RT’s would be great , or , what the hell , I’m fantasizing here ..... Supercharged Songtowers - cuz they have the fabulous RAAL ribbon tweeters and SEAS magnesium woofers .....

So , last week on a whim , cuz I’m bored , I peruse my local craigslist just to see what’s available in Dallas .... B&W, Maggie’s, Klipsch, Martin Logan etc ..... whatever ... just curious ..... wife will never go for it anyways ..... just fantasy ...

Turns out a guy in my neighborhood has a pair of 4 year old Salk supercharged songtowers up for sale , original owner ..... $2,300 ..... wow , I think .... these things are $4k now ....

I called Jim Salk and talked to him about his various speakers ( I had never listened to a pair ).
I was up front and honest , told him about the used speakers I was considering....
He was a 100% pure class act ...he guided me appropriately... my sincere thanks to him !
What a great businessman and individual.

So I go to his place today to check them out ...
Man , I was soooooo jealous ... he is a audiophile junkie .... was selling because he just bought a new pair of Klipsch heritage Cornwall’s and didn’t need the salks anymore ...

He had a McIntosh 275 tube amp , McIntosh c22 tube pre amp , Oppo player , 2 turntables and walls of vinyl..... easily a $20k setup .... he had decided a few months ago to go all analog and new-old school .....

The salks were ABSOLUTELY mint .... not a single scratch , dent or blemish ....
Walnut burst finish and upgraded Cardas bi-amp binding posts
Like they just came out of the box .... I’m thinking , this guy is as anal about his equipment as I am ..... he even had the boxes and paperwork....

I show up with a cd and he says “MAN , I LOVE THAT BAND , WHAT A GREAT LIVE RECORDING! “

Karma , right ??

I listened for a good 2 hours or so to various stuff and all I can say is .... WOW !!
SALK has a well deserved reputation.....
The workmanship on these is without a doubt the best I have ever seen ....
When you hear about how beautiful the Salk cabinets are , you won’t believe it until you see it for yourself.

The highs - OMG ! Crystal clear - the RAAL ribbon tweeters , unbelievable...
The mids - like she’s singing in the room
The lows - plenty of bass
A VERY precise , flat and accurate presentation
Imaging and soundstage - fantastic

Can’t wait to compare them to my SDA 1c’s side by side

So ..... I offered him $2k , he accepted.... and they’re mine .....

Haven’t hooked them up at home yet , wife let me buy them as she wants to redecorate the den , where these will reside ...

Haven’t yet decided what to power them with yet .... I have a few amps / receivers here ....

Here’s some pics .....

Thanks for letting me share ...

BK

Ps - love the wifey even more now .... ( just in case she’s reading this ) :)

Jim is always happy to share his passion with folks.
He actually came out to central Iowa in 2015 for a tiny little home theater crawl and audio get together we had and hauled 3 pairs of speakers out with him to demo.
His wife is an absolute saint of a woman and as a fellow woodworking enthusiast, Jim loves to see other folks' projects as well.

Congrats on the awesome speakers Gyosa!

Preliminary listening impressions vs . 1cs ... side by side ...
hooked up to my Parasound a21......
    Streaming tidal hifi ....

Went to bed last nite after re-run of SNL .... dinner w the family , few cocktails ( well , more than a few ....)
So take this with a grain of salt ( or , Salk ) ....

Disclaimer - my 1c’s are factory stock ( important - w regards to my impressions- they are not fully up to their potential ) with the exception of 194 tweets I installed last month ... owned since new ...will upgrade crossovers soon ...
    And I LOVE them ....

Thanks to every one here who helped me with that .....

    Soundstage - polks win ....
    3D soundstage - salks win
    Soundstage w polks are left , right , I likely ...
salks - DEPTH ... more holographic... fore and aft , I likely ...
... different ... but equally good .... now I see why people have multiple speakers ...

Precision and clarity - salks ..... remember, my Polk crossovers are stock , for now ...
Bass - tie .... salks - precise and focused .. tight
Polks - reach deeper , but not as precise ... a little muddled ( passive radiator )

Trade off ....precision or depth ..... hmmmmm... ‘whaddya like ?

Here’s where it gets interesting ..
Highs - Salk ... all the way ... that RAAL tweeter is everything I have read about ....unbelievable... like liquid glass
    Did I say unbelievable? ......

Mids - Salk ....the RAAL and SEAS woofer again ... seamless crossover

Bass - tossup ... polks play WAY lower . ... thump thump thump
Salks , not as much but way more refined ...more precise

WAF - Salk ..... unbelievable fit and finish ... like a piece of furniture...

Conclusion.... I’ve only had em for a day - and had a few drinks -
I like them both ...equally... if the polks had new x-overs .... well ........

They are different for different reasons ...

    Salk - precision and clarity - reference speakers ... Porsche 911 C4s
Polk - get your party on and let’s rock - let the fun begin ... vintage 60’s Porsche

    Whadda like ??
Personally, I like both equally , for different reasons ....😊

    Bottom line ....
supposition on my part .... fully modded polks prob won’t beat the salks ....for the price difference - tie maybe , ... but for $2k , what the hell .... I have 2 great different pairs of speakers - each has it’s strengths and weaknesses.... rabbit hole , huh ?

Matthew Polk —- still well done , after 30 years !

Thanks for wasting your time reading 😊
