A customer of mine used a single CRS+ for his center. I rebuilt a Monitor 10 rev2 crossover for it.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Not yet...looking at either the 706C or possibly a Def Tech CLR3000. Going to think on it for a couple days. -
I went with the 706C in Midnight Mahogany. Thanks @dpowell for the heads up on the sale. Will post my thoughts after I get it up and running.

It would be worthwhile if you could show the custom center channel you built again. It sure was minty and will cause some envy in anyone looking for the ideal CC speaker for SDA's because you have the only one.

Yes that came out really nice.. looks like it sounds nice also.
Heres a current pic of my home brewed cc using two Rti11tl's, rebuilt crossovers and tweeter upgrade. Not as nice looking but they are behind a 120" accustic transparent screen so nobody see them. They sound fantastic in all 6 seats, both rows. Something I could never get right with a traditional cc below the screen.

@westmassguy...
I just finished reading your link (I skimmed through it earlier) to the cc you built.
Very nice job you did with it.
Nice right up too. -

Doug sold me his MIT S1 speaker cables, so now I have them on the top and bottom of my 3.1’s. I moved my S3’s to the CS1000p to replace my old MH-750 cables. I heard a difference immediately as the vocals became more intelligible and the blend across the three front channels improved. It wasn’t a night and day difference though. It is kind of subtle and cumulative and sneaks up on you when you’re not paying attention. Vocal sibilance is also more apparent making it easier to make out what people are saying without having to either turn up the volume overall or increase the center level. In fact I turned the center level down and it’s still easier to understand what people are saying.

@westmassguy nice work on the center channel.
I was thinking on trying something similiar to maintain a timbre match. Perhaps trying an upward firing passive with a lower profile cabinet since the CRS is too tall for my setup. However a new build would be too involved at the moment but would like to try.
Still waiting on the 706C, the first one had to go back due to damage as well as other minor issues. -

Both my custom and the CRS+ were rather involved. Not exactly a weekend project. I've heard others have used an RTA-8T on it's side. It should perform similar to mine, except it's ported. You could invert polarity on the tweeter to try and mitigate any lobing effect.

If anyone is wondering about the benefits of having a large center channel. Download the mulitchannel DSD version of David Elias Crossing Morning Light Western Town and play it back on your Oppo. The bass line coming mostly from the center channel is INCREDIBLE and pressurizes my living room. The bass speakers on my CS-1000p along with the power ports are amazing. -
So I've had the 706C in place for about a week....being fed from center out of the Marantz SR5012, the L&R main which are currently the 2.3TL is fed also from the SR5012 but through the McCormack RLD-1 in theater bypass to the DNA-1.
The 706C sounds clean, but despite what sounds to be a close match, it seems there is a void somewhere between the upper midrange and the bass...almost slightly grainy for lack of better terms.
I'm looking at this large speaker, but hearing a smaller, boxy sounding speaker that doesnt aound as rich as I would expect.
This was using the Audssey and I made sure sub was set to off, speakers are large...I have slightly better results using manual and setting the EQ myself.
I saw there was a center width setting but haven't seen it on the setup screen.
The 706C sounds real good, don't get me wrong, but at the same time sounds somewhat tight, constrained, little bit of grain...I would think maybe the tweeter and the small midrange would flow better into the mid bass drivers but they seem to sound more isolated from them...not a seamless flow.
Perhaps it's a setting I overlooked, any input appreciated.

I'm wondering if some of the sound issues you are experiencing could be due to the speaker needing to be broken in? The graininess issue is really surprising. As you increase volume, do those issues become more pronounced?____________________________________________________________

I had no graininess with my 704 or 703s. I am wondering if this is a bad tweeter as several others on the forum have experienced???Living Room 2.2: Usher BE-718 "tiny dancers"; Dual DIY Dayton audio RSS210HF-4 Subs with Dayton SPA-250 amps; Arcam SA30; Musical Fidelity A308; Sony UBP-x1000es

He said the void and the grain is in between the upper midrange and bass. Sounds like it could be a possible issue with the midrange driver. Or just needing more break in. -
I'm wondering if some of the sound issues you are experiencing could be due to the speaker needing to be broken in?
I was thinking (hoping) that could be the case, the 6 1/5" surrounds are somewhat stiff for sure. The graininess issue is really surprising. As you increase volume, do those issues become more pronounced?
The graininess I'm hearing could be the over-emphasis on the bias towards the tweeter/small midrange driver and not having that lower mid bass fill. However it still sounds like that....a hint of grain.
When I turn it up, not much changes. It has bass but it's hard to describe..somewhat tight but not rich.
The dialog is crisp and effortless though, very easy to understand everything with great detail.I had no graininess with my 704 or 703s. I am wondering if this is a bad tweeter as several others on the forum have experienced???
The tweeter definitely works, unsure of it's frequency response or if any distortion.

What is the crossover set at?
I think I read that you ran Audssey but maybe it's set to high..
I like to run it at 40hz to 50hz... much higher and it starts to thin out or sound to small for my Lf & Rt's
Then again it's very possible it needs some more breakin in time.
Put it on a signal gen set at 60 to 80hz and go shopping...
That'll weak it up. -
When I ran Audssey, it chose "Large" for L/R, & center, I was going to use that anyway.
No sub, but the crossover is at 80Hz which concerned me, I cannot select a lower cutoff but I believe that's if I use the sub.
Unless I'm missing something. -
I'm not familiar with Audssey at all. But on my Anthem avm60 it doesn't have large or small. It goes by crossover steps starting at 40hz on up per-chennal. If you select off then you loose the sub for the most part...
What happens if you set it to small, will it let you set the crossover points lower?
Do you have a signal test disc that will run tones below 80hz?
This will help you see where the roll-off is... -
With Audyssey when you set any of the speakers to "large" there is no crossover at all to the sub for that particular speaker.
I agree with @DSkip to give it time to break in.
Doug have you been running sound through the center continuously (meaning non stop) for the entire week to break it in?
If you haven't then it will take FOREVER to break in. -
Haven't been feeding it non-stop, so I agree that will extend any break in. Perhaps it does need more time...it's a large gap for it to overcome if that's the case but I've been through that before.
I did run a frequency sweep and it responds well from 30Hz on up. -
Just put the radio on and set the sound field to pro logic or whatever will turn the center on and leave it running.
