Anyone know if I can put a PSA vinyl wrap over the existing finish? I was think just a clean up and then wrap it.
The oem finish has seen better days.
Again, thanks for all the input guys. -
Short answer is yes, but without meticulous prep, the outcome won't look much better, especially if the material is thin. PSA is a PITA if you don't have experience with it; very unforgiving.
-
Consider PSA Wood Veneer. I have done 3 sets of Polks with wood veneer with excellent results. And many others here have used wood veneer as well.

Totally agree here, but understand that PSA vinyl can be anywhere from 2-8 mil thick, veneer starts at about 1/32" (almost 4x thicker) and goes up. Plus veneer has very little conformability, so imperfections are more easily hidden. -
Proper preparation before the veneer is applied is the key to a successful finished product.
-
Good to know guys. Thanks. I'll get reading on vaneer prep. Ordered some vinyl maple burl.
-
The rest of my caps came today. Will start on them tomorrow. Also picking up a pair of JBL L3 near Tampa around noon. Can't wait to give them a try.
Nice finish on these caps.

Is this normal bracing for a 12b? Or does it look like someone else has been in here? Seems to be braced pretty well.
-
From what I can see, the bracing looks the same as my 12's
-
Thanks Austin. I added a little condensed poly fill behind the oem poly. Was not able to get my hands on some blackhole in time. Putting on new speaker gasket now. Then to start on the other speaker.
-
Never noticed before now that my right speaker had electrolytics and my left had polys. What gives?
-
Well....you have to consider that cigarette breaks back in the day may have been, well....more than store bought tobacco.
-
At least you will know that you did them right.
-
those are Mylar not poly's and yes not unusual at all.

Thanks, I was not sure I had that right. -

A lot of magic herbs, rainbows and unicorns were found in the assembly area back in the day, so I'm told. You'd be amazed at some of the crossovers that have passed through my hands. Some of the components weren't even remotely close to what the schematic says is supposed to be there.
BTW, the blue cans and the black plastic caps are both NP Electrolytics, just different manufacturers.Home Theater/2 Channel:

On top of all that (no big deal) they must have ran out of fittings. I had the positive wire on one woofer soldered on. Good thing I had some extra fittings.
-
Now that they are done I'm given them a listen. They now disappear completely and imaging is phenomenally better than before. Bass is tighter (new gaskets?) But they dont seem to be going as low as they did before. They did just replace some bass heavy ported JBL L3s, so maybe that's why they dont sound as deep????
They absolutely sound better than the L3s. No doubt.
Playing a DVD Audio over Pandora made a great improvement too. Wish I could figure out how to stream dsd or flac.

Yep I must be on the magical stuff today as well, I knew they were NP electro yet had the yellow Mylar's in my head and typed that instead. Well at least I always thought the yellows were Mylar.... Wait was it a blue pill or red pill day???? maybe I mixed them and came out a purple day....
-
Give them sometime to burn in. My 12's came alive around 200 hours.

Ha! every time I see a picture of your RTA 12s I think "didn't they have black/blue (whichever I'm not seeing) caps?" I then decide I'm losing my marbles.
Glad to know I'm not going mad. -

but it just keeps caaalllin me Dave.
fargin booger snatcher LMAO -
Would leaving them playing at low volume work? Or do they need some juice behind them? I'm thinking about leaving them on to stream Pandora for several 15 hour days days to break in the caps. Thanks
-
Also, I just noticed I replaced the the 55uf caps with 56 uf caps. Not sure why I did that.
Being that most caps were + or - 10 % this should not be to much a problem right? The new Mundorfs I used are 3% tolerance. -
Nope that will not be a problem. Turn them on and let them play. They do not need to be played loud, just sound coming out. Can be low
-
So.... I might be looking at selling or parting these out. Since I got the Infinity RSII and a Hafler amp, I'm thinking the income from these could really help with some upgrades.
I'm thinking ill take the 12b back from the living room to the listening room before deciding 100%. I'll have to do a side by side and let one go. I'd say the 12B have a 50 50 shot against the Infjnity.
Selling my Carver was one thing, the 12B are another ballpark. -
That sounds like a tough decision.
I've never heard those Infinity's so all I can say is, I wish I had less space so I could decide which to keep and which to let go of.
I was just talking yesterday to my friends here about me wanting to let go of 4 MCS towers to regain some space out in the cottage. "But they sound so good it's hard to decide" I said.
I wish you peace with whatever you decide.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.
