Basement Leak at Verb's House!

Well today was a little dramatic. 2 days constant rain, super high water table, and this morning I noticed a little wet spot on the carpeted floor in the basement. Schiesse!

So I started following the wetness along the baseboard. About 3 feet from the doorway in the spare bedroom.

Popped the baseboard off, lower paneling, and ugh, drywall! What a mess! This is what I found:

A little pin hole in the wall, peeing steadily! What?!

    Hard to tell in the above pic, but there is a steady stream flowing into the blue bucket. I put a fan next to the wet area to help drying. A little later, I hooked up a funnel with a hose near the hole to better direct the water into the bucket. Ugh!

    Eventually I exposed the true size and nature of the hole. 5/8" diameter, used to hold the forms together as the concrete walls are poured. This guy was never fulled sealed, as the concrete at the pin hole easily popped off, exposing the hole.

    So now I'm thinking about hydraulic pressure, building behind the cork, and eventually blasting that sucker out of the hole! So I nailed a backer board in place to hold the cork in.

    I did find these new patented plugs that are designed to seal the holes. Called TRX Plugs, they act kinda like a boat seal with a threaded fastener in the middle to increase the outside diameter. What's interesting about these is the rubber compound actually expands when exposed to water!

    That sucks. What's the grade like outside the house? Do you have downspouts extended away from the house, gutters clean? First thing I did when I moved into my 50's ranch was build the grade up all around the foundation to run downhill away from the house. I put in pop up drains for the gutters at least 10ft. away from the house. Don't have any trees near the gutters but still clean them out several times a year from flying leaves all around. Haven't had any water issues what so ever since doing so and I have no sump pump.

    That’s a clear indication that you might need to do some work on your water management.

    As others have mentioned about downspouts and grading.

    But you either need your French drain checked, or have one installed.

    Hydrostatic pressure on that plug is the least of your concerns. A basement wall heaving or buckling is a MUCH bigger issue.

    You need to get the water away from your foundation.

    Do you have a sump pump?

    concur, and that was my point -- water pouring through a crack or hole is indicative of a pretty serious water reservoir outside the wall -- and water is pretty uncooperative when it comes to being held at bay.

    Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions. My plan is to regrade further the area around the suspect wall to ensure the water drains away from the house. I did the same on the other walls last year with good results.

    Downspouts are all good, in fact they are all plumbed to an underground system that dumps the water about 100 feet from the house.

    The gutters need a bit of work. They are all in good repair, but I noticed that a few of which the grade needs to be adjusted to allow better flow. Especially at the corners, near the suspect area, where some of the water splashes over. That is also on my list this year!

    So this issue of the re-bar holes not being sealed and leaking is quite common, after further reading and talking to my colleagues at work. My plan is to use the TRX plug to permanently seal that particular hole. I probably won't re-drywall for some time, at least through spring, to ensure the fix is robust.

    Sump pump is good, operating normally too.

    Ahh, the joys of home ownership!

    Just got home today and all is good. Dry as a bone! Not to mention big points from the Mrs. for solving a problem! You know how that is, fellas! :smile:
