Another speaker stand build

These will be for my Vienna Acoustics bookshelf speakers. I'm one of those people who buys something that needs assembly, and when there are extra pieces that aren't required, just can't throw those perfectly good pieces away, because, "I might need them someday!"
So, this one has been stirring around in my head for a while. I have a couple dozen extra vinyl balusters from the deck I built around 2006.
They're a hair under an inch and a quarter square, so I thought 9 of them bundled together, 3x3 (about the same size as a 4x4), would make a nice post for some stands.
They can easily be filled with sand or cement. I'm initially thinking of filling 8 and leaving the center back one hollow to route the speaker cable through.

Base and top plates will be oak, which will be stained or painted black*, and the posts will be sprayed a gloss black*. I'm thinking the base will be about 1.5" thick, while the top plate will be about 1" thick. And, of course, they'll be spiked. That's about it. It will likely be a slow project, as I want them to look nice. They should definitely be sturdy and solid. I'll post more as I progress.
-
After looking at the 3x3 result, I decided that since I had enough material, 3x4 might be better.
-
Here's my close-to-scale powerpoint mock-up.
-
Top and bottom plates are cut - 1.5" thick. Post ends are plugged with 3/4" wood glued in. Corners are 4", to accommodate long bolts to fasten the top and bottom plates. Only the bottom is plugged initially, so I can add sand. Decided not to use concrete, since the posts are already very rigid.
-
1" holes will be on the back, allowing speaker cables to be hidden. 11 of 12 posts will be filled with sand.
-
What did you use to glue them together?
Christy's PVC glue?Where’s the KABOOM?!?! There’s supposed to be an Earth shattering KABOOM!!! -

Ed, things are shaping up nicely. One question, why did you make the top plate that thick?Political Correctness'.........defined

How are you attaching the wood base to the PVC?
-
Mostly just because... 2 x 3/4" boards glued together. Thicker than most I've looked at, but I figured it couldn't hurt. They definitely look substantial and already have some weight to them even before filling with sand. Searching now for some isolation pads to go between speaker and stand. The sorbothane pads on Amazon have some reviews that seem to indicate there's the possibility of a chemical reaction on some surfaces that causes me some concern.
Oh, and thanks! -

Put a small piece of aluminum foil over the pads.

I'm also curious. These are going to to be some great looking stands when completed.
Looking forward to the finished project, good work!

Dude, I use some of this stuff on the Totem Rainmakers, works pretty well:

Cut it to fit. Doesn't leave stains, easy to replace if it starts to degrade too. Comes in a variety of colors, doubles up easily too.

I'm familiar with that stuff, but it never crossed my mind. Seems like it should do for what I want. For the price, definitely worth a shot. Thanks John! -
Thanks to all for the compliments and suggestions! Spikes are on the way. Hopefully I can pull off a respectable spray can paint job. All black, with the posts glossy and the wood parts satin.
-
And just where, pray tell, are you finding this "black paint" you speak of??
-
Oh, I know where'n I can git some, and I ain't tellin'.
-
unobtanium black paint. Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

You might need to use primer designed for plastic on the posts before spraying the top coat. Check top coat rattle can to see if it is rated for application to plastics. If it doesn't say, probably not.
-
Very nice work. I'm curious, you added mass, and plan on spiking them, per your drawing, which effectively couples them to the structure. Why then de-couple them, with sorbothane or some other isolation material?Home Theater/2 Channel:
