Guys, you don't boil crabs, you have to steam them.

Here is a link for the product and how to steam them.

    http://www.mccormick.com/productdetail.cfm?ID=6216

These are stores that carry it in Florida,

    Albertson's
    IGA
    Publix
    Super Target
    Super Value
    Wal Mart Super Center
    Winn Dixie

All you have to do is really look at those things for about 5 seconds. Who was the first fool to grab one of those and figure, "I'm going to put this in my mouth"? One hungry dude I'll tell you that.

I assume boiling is detrimental to the meat or flavor in some way? I don't eat crabs, but the grocery stores here sell crab boil seasoning.

What happens if you fry them?:)

Maybe in your neck of the woods there F1;)

I will have to try them that way once though.

We like to "burl 'em" down here. Boiling them with the seasoning in the water really gets it inside the shell to flavor the meat. Sucking the juice out of the claws is one of the best parts.

Boiling crabs tends to make the meat soggy, steaming doesn't. When steamed with generous amounts of Old bay the flavor does get into the meat and you can always wipe the crusted Old Bay from a shell with your finger, spread it on the meat and then grap your cold drink PDQ.

Raife, they do have what's called a fried hard crab, but I've never tried it.

So Faster, what do you think?

My neighbor is a BIG fisherman. He goes nearly every weekend. A few months back he went crabing. We had a very yummy Sunday BBQ at his place. He had some 30+ crabs, not sure what kind though, but they were tastey.

He's tried and tried to get me to go lobster diving but I have yet to take him up on the offer.

Dude, the hell with hotsauce, you need some horseraddish in that ketchup! Not just the weaksauce stuff you get from like Heinz either. I'm talk REAL horse raddish, the kind that makes your eyes water!. Mix that in with your ketchup and get some tartar sauce for those crab cakes next time! THAT right there is the ONLY way to have crab cakes. An honorable mention goes to crab cakes with a hollandaise sauce though.

As far as boiled or steamed, boiled crabs are better for doing other dishes like crab cakes or stuffing a lobster tail or something. Reason is the boiled crab is less likely to dry out when cooked further. For clean'n'eat crabs steaming is best. It's easier to dig the meat out of a steamed crab than it is to dig it out of a boiled crab. You can use Zatarain's seasonings to steam crabs too. I found that using twice as much seasoning of Zatarain's is better for steaming because you coat the crabs and also throw it in the steaming water. The same with Old Bay but Old Bay tends to be stronger in the seasoning department so too much can be overwhelming.

Not really into horse raddish , besides on a blooming onion... and no way to tartar sauce.. don't like mayonaise based dressings...
or that type sauces, (taste like mayo or dressing) The hot sauce was actually pretty good for my taste.. Remember im not a big seafood eater "yet" so im taking it slow... Thanks for the tips though, seems you all are seafood experts compared to me... im new.. :D

You can't really live anywhere between Maryland and Maine and not have some clue about seafood...well, any food in general.

People I know California wonder why there are so many "overweight" people in the north east. Well, if they had the array of food availble to them like we do, they'd be packing some extra poundage too! From Maryland crab cakes to Philly cheese steaks and everything in between, one major reason I refuse to leave the area I am living in now is the culture that is here. It's not just food but other things but the food has ALOT to do with it! Sure, I've been other places and tried other things but nothing really compares aside from a Texas BBQ.

well me and my wife are avid cooks, we love to cook... i BBQ when i can as much as i can, Seafood is just not my favorite.. Hense i didn't care to learn anything about it.. Now however i am trying it out.. Like any food, new to someone ya have to start out at a pace you like, to see if its something you really will like or not.. i myself love beef and pork and BBQ of anykind.. BUt seafood can fit in there as well "somewhere" your right there is alot of good food to be had , I love this little restuarant that makes philly steaks... locally.. I love texas cattle CO. for the huge 32 oz Porter houses.. oh yeah!! But the Seafood is just a new venture.. Its not for everyone weather you live in the south or not.. that's for sure..

really about the only things you should put on your crab cakes are the juice from a lemon and hot sauce. if you smother them in mayo or some dressings.. you cover up the flavors.. and not to mention add a BAzillion calories. :p
