If you're receiving food stamps maybe you shouldn't be spending money on Prime.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

There's no way the EBT benefit should be allowed to be used for that purpose. Every American tax payer should be royally pizzed off about this.Political Correctness'.........defined

Does Amazon sell food products at lower prices?
The ad is not for products, it's for a membership to Prime.Political Correctness'.........defined

Nuff said. Means to me one of the richest companies in the world is giving a Prime membership half off to a group of people who are getting a tax dollar hand up to get back on their feet. A lot of people are scamming the system ,being here illegally,or just not wanting to work because the gravy train is too good and easy. Nuff said. One of the many reasons why I never buy from Amazon! -
This is smart marketing. Amazon is trying to compete for Walmart customers. The EBT card cannot be used to purchase the membership of course. The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

There have been many studies showing that people who live in poor neighborhoods have less access to large grocery stores and big box stores and lack the means to get to them. Consequently, they tend to purchase close to home which means much higher prices for basic items. Free shipping simply gets more customers who would otherwise spend the money they have elsewhere. In the age of the internet it is all about having access to potential customers.
Amazon's decision was a reaction to this, and probably based on internal marketing studies and a desire to get the business that would go elsewhere. It is also a good marketing tool to attract those with greater means since it gives the impression that one of the world's largest companies cares about the welfare of those less fortunate.
Win-win for Amazon. The measly $5 a month probably doesn't cost the company anything. -
Nope just another cost subsidy passed to those that can. Like shipping these companies get next day air shipping for peanuts while I Joe public go in and get raped for that. I can ship something at work to east coast for 18.00. The same thing for me personally costs 72.00

Why do they need access to large grocery stores, if they don't have the money to spend there ? What they need is access to jobs, not more access to handouts that promote addiction to them.
In reality, it's local governments that keep out big chain stores to keep the mom and pop stores viable. Grocery chains, retail chains, all given a hard time when they want to invade a city. Walmart being one.
So government must then believe the poor can sustain themselves by buying stuff from mom and pop joints. How does allowing them to spend that welfare buck at Amazon help the mom and pop stores ? Double standard ? Who owns those mom and pop stores ? Maybe....people who live in those communities ?
This was not Amazon's decision, it was governments allowing that welfare to be spent at online retailers. It was their decision to offer half off prime though....to attract those welfare bucks government already green lighted.
Does Amazon have limits to what those welfare bucks can be spent on ? Betcha....not. With the amount of welfare fraud as it stands today, this amounts to one big money racket that we all pay for, and Amazon just wants a cut of it.HT SYSTEM-

Yes Tony, Amazon would have to follow the same rules as any brick and mortar store.
I know, this is a hard concept to grasp.Post edited by motorhead43026 onThe best way to predict the future is to invent it.

Disconnect the brakes and put the pedal to the metal. Who's riding shotgun!!!?

I teach political theory as well as race, gender, and class theory at a major research university. I am comfortable discussing any topic from any perspective, and do so with my students and colleagues. But it is futile (and a waste of time) on an audio forum, and it distracts from what I come here to do: discuss audio and related topics.
If you want to discuss poverty, food deserts, and the best way to deal with the problem from a political perspective, there are plenty of forums to do so.
