I bought my 2.3tls and my Clearaudio TT, with savings paid it all back intrest free in a year, they came up at a time when buying them at that time was necessary as they wouldn't of been available at a later time.
If it's some thing that will be around in a long enough time then start saving if you can't wait borrow with the intent of paying it back, borrow don't take.Home Theater

If you have no intentions of replacing it's called spending, if your intentions are replacing it then your borrowing.Home Theater

I pay cash for everything, and then start saving again to replace. Now if the question was "Would you spend your retirement savings for stereo gear?" then the answer is yes. I will just postpone retiring for a few years. LOL.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

I have no idea if you recall but this is exactly how this bender started. I was on track to retire November of last year but then decided to go for the 30 year bonus (about 20% more) which is now 3 years and 2 months out. This gave me a lot of room to play. Anyway, I am afraid of dying (or goin deef) before I get my speakers lol.
Fact is I can borrow from my personal retirement fund (nothing to do with the above bonus) having to pay it back plus interest to myself. What would Heyzues do? -

Decisions, decisions. I am 67 and know I won't live forever. At this point my health and hearing are fine, so I figured what the heck. I may as well get my final system now and enjoy it.

Borrow my own money? No. Take funds that I have earned? AbsoF'nlutely!
Without a doubt.

It is money that I have earned. I am with Bud on this, no one lives forever. I have one thing that I really dig and it's the sounds. BTW my ol lady is walking out on me as we speak. **** it, my tunes never did me wrong.

Tony! I hear he gives a discount if he gets to break both. -

Well, it could be -- one may borrow against one's principal (or, as other's have mentioned, against one's retirement savings). The former may make a lot of sense if the net cost of self financing (there's always some) is low. The latter is probably better reserved for fairly dire circumstances.
As an example (sort of): We self-financed the construction of our NH house against our investments, then paid ourselves back when we sold the MA house. Beats making a construction loan or a mortgage against the new construction, especially for a transient loan (there was essentially no paperwork involved, at least the way we did it).
If you take a minute to calculate the long-term impact of spending your principal now, you'd probably never buy anything!
Here's a "future value of a present sum" calculator if you want to play with some numbers.

If I do borrow from my account the terms a something like 3.5% interest and a processing fee of no more than 50 bucks. Basically, I would be borrowing about 1.5% of the portfolio and the way that it is structured the funds would be at least 90% from a stable value fund that doesnt have a high rate for return, I am not sure but it's probably 2% ish.
-
If this means what I think it means ....BTW my ol lady is walking out on me as we speak. **** it, my tunes never did me wrong.
.... then another factor may come into play. The "What's mine is mine, and what's yours is mine" scenario.
Don't know, don't need to know, but ... just a thought. Don't ask me how I know.

If your only earning 2%, you need a new fund.
-
Three words my friend.....Interest Free Financing. Music Direct or Audio Advisor. I don't use the 401k loan unless it's an emergency type deal....but that's just me.

It's a stable value fund, it's not supposed to make money lol. It's only a portion of a highly diversified portfolio which I have. Intentionally structured so if I were to borrow from it that the monies would come from the stable value fund and not the various equities and other securities in the porfolio..

NO, if you are forced to borrow money even from yourself, then it better be for something important, and speakers are NOT it!
You obviously have very mixed up priorities as to what is important. Your ex is one smart woman for walking out. Saves a lot of aggravation for her down the line.afterburnt wrote: »Would you borrow your own money to buy...A pair of nice speakers?

I call them as I see them.
Speakers are in the "I want" category, not the "necessity" catagory. Borrowing money should be reserved for necessities not wants.
A good many people never figure this out and then end up in debt up to their eyeballs, or working until they drop dead because they never figured this important life lesson out.afterburnt wrote: »NO, if you are forced to borrow money even from yourself, then it better be for something important, and speakers are NOT it!
