Eureka! I enquired about the monolith in the room. It seems the "new" construction was in fact once a restaurant in front of the original hotel in back.
The new owners gutted the building and made more rooms. The area where my room is was once the kitchen area that had all the mechanicals on the roof. Chillers, compressors and a 25 ton Roof Top (RTU) air handler for the dining area.
Thus the need for more beams in the above ceiling area. They could not remove said eyesore without redoing the whole roof loading structure.
Still wierd looking but at least it makes sense now.

In seriousness (well, as close to what passes for seriousness in this goat rodeo) -- good to have an explanation.

You, sir (and I really do mean this as a compliment) have the min of a scientist.
Isn't it nice not to know just what, buy why? :)

Nice job Mr. H. You brought this thread to a whole new page.
There will be much rejoicing across the lands!

As a side, i didn't even see Lightman's explanation. Skipped right passed it as i have now declared this "2017 random post thread where all bets are off" thread.

    oops! Surprise F-bomb edit!

    man, that's sad.
    The sloths, that is.

I am picturing the jungle floor, carpeted with dead, stupid sloths.
Sort of like grey shag carpeting.

... and that's what they call "Natural Selection".

That's what I do with this crazy silly lighting gig. Taking a new product and implementing it into a real world application. It's not as simple as most would think. There are many parameters from the lumens per sq. ft. The parabolic refraction of the light pattern as it applies to main roads or side steets. Intersection lighting placement so as not to interfere with traffic signal visibility.
I always gotta figure out "why" as opposed to "what".

That's a riot because i was trying to figure out how to use the very same MP moment but kept getting hung on "they were forced to eat Robin's minstrels...there was much rejoicing....yaaaaaay"

    "Reduction to practice" :)

That's what I spent most of my career doing, too, in biotech process development.

It's a noble calling we share.

"The Crazy World of Arthur Brown" -- how did I miss commenting on that the first time around?

No matter -- I've rectified that oversight now.

This is a picture of an oversight rectifier, by the way:
