Note that the mathematics prof's place of employment is down in Farmville (sort of south and a little west of Richmond) -- I think they were under a winter storm warning for this last one but he wasn't there so I don't know if'n they got pummeled (relatively speaking) or not.
I guess I could unleash teh power of teh webs & find out

Right.....So I drive about 10-11 hours yesterday from Indiana to Virginia. Storm recovery preparation....thank me later.
I reach the motel I was booked in. Looks like a new construction. Bonus! I grab my gear, check in and slog on to my room. Open the door and I am greeted by this monolith smack dab in middle of the room. DaHell??!
Mind you, it's a one story building. Not much load to bear. It's a formed concrete pillar where I can not see any structural value to it's placement.
I've been in construction of dog houses to 70 story office buildings. Even helped out on Panthers Stadium.
Never have I seen such a miscalculation.

Russ - When I was in grad school at Penn State, we had an apartment on the second floor. Our windows looked over an alley to another apartment building. The unit in that building directly across from us had an eerily similar misplaced column in one of the bedrooms in front of a window. To "fix" the engineering faux pas, the apartment interior designers put a full length mirror on the column. Anyone see where this is going?
Well, windows are confusing to those on the inside. Many people think that when it's dark outside and the lights are on inside that since they can't see OUT, surely people outside can't see IN. So, why close the blinds? This full length mirror on the misplaced column in front of the window of the apartment across the alley became THE place where the ladies who lived there would, uh, prepare to go out. Funny, it was my wife (girlfriend at the time) who pointed out what would become the regular evening show across the alley.
God bless that engineer! -

Eh, it's not that unusual. Sometimes plans change after the structure is 80% complete. Maybe the room was originally slated to be a service room but the owners wanted the rental income for that space towards the end of the project. Maybe an engineer on the project was fresh out of college and didn't know his arse from a hole in the wall....wanted the additional support for God knows what reason. Lots of reasons why crap like that happens.
Personally, I think it's for the gremlins that come crawling out the vent after midnight. Maybe it's one of those rooms where people check in, but never check out.HT SYSTEM-

What surprises me is that we actually went to a 2nd page on this...
Lightman......the *NEW* PFB poster!Where’s the KABOOM?!?! There’s supposed to be an Earth shattering KABOOM!!! -
Yaaaaaaassssss!

Original site picture. Doc Hardy nailed it.

Yes that would explain it, wouldn't it? "Existing conditions" -- you gotta do what you gotta do, you know? Environmental & historical preservation regulations. Heck, I'm surprised they were allowed to repaint it. Maybe they had trouble sourcing some black paint.
We just need to keep an eye on our own Beacon of Light -- make sure he doesn't start chuckin' bones up at the ISS as it passes over, stuff like that.

Eureka! I enquired about the monolith in the room. It seems the "new" construction was in fact once a restaurant in front of the original hotel in back.
The new owners gutted the building and made more rooms. The area where my room is was once the kitchen area that had all the mechanicals on the roof. Chillers, compressors and a 25 ton Roof Top (RTU) air handler for the dining area.
Thus the need for more beams in the above ceiling area. They could not remove said eyesore without redoing the whole roof loading structure.
Still wierd looking but at least it makes sense now. -
Hold onto your keisters.....here comes page #3!Where’s the KABOOM?!?! There’s supposed to be an Earth shattering KABOOM!!!
