Right.....So I drive about 10-11 hours yesterday from Indiana to Virginia. Storm recovery preparation....thank me later.
I reach the motel I was booked in. Looks like a new construction. Bonus! I grab my gear, check in and slog on to my room. Open the door and I am greeted by this monolith smack dab in middle of the room. DaHell??!
Mind you, it's a one story building. Not much load to bear. It's a formed concrete pillar where I can not see any structural value to it's placement.
I've been in construction of dog houses to 70 story office buildings. Even helped out on Panthers Stadium.
Never have I seen such a miscalculation.

Same here. Maybe a variation in the floorplan to run some mechanicals in, but nothing to this degree.

The Cape & southeast MA got fairly pummeled. Nothin' up here in the Upper Valley but cold (1 degree F this morning; but tomorrow it is s'posed to be cold).

Note that the mathematics prof's place of employment is down in Farmville (sort of south and a little west of Richmond) -- I think they were under a winter storm warning for this last one but he wasn't there so I don't know if'n they got pummeled (relatively speaking) or not.

I guess I could unleash teh power of teh webs & find out ;)

It's pretty much a single story rectangle. All rooms look to be ADA set. Took a peek in a couple rooms the staff were cleaning and this is the only one. Go figure. There are no RTUs on top. No elevator shafts.

Exactly! This place looks like steel beam on corner caisons then 6" framing studs for outside walls. Width front to back...maybe 70'. Prolly steel roof truss to centerline supports along the main hallway. So no more than a 35' span. Flat roof one story building so no loads there.
AND...it's only about three feet from the outside wall....
    A head scratcher for sure.

Maybe the plan was to put the infrastructure in for future upper floors...

There's gotta be a point load there but a simple lally column should have sufficed. It's cute to say the least.

Yep. Seems like overkill given the placement and size of existing structure.
