Actually, tonight, my wife and I will put the five-hours-long BBC production of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" on the TV and wait till midnight, when we shall open a bottle of 1978 Dom Perignon that was bequeathed to me by a very close audiophile friend who passed away in mid-2015. Our first toast will be to my friend; the second to the new year.
I hope the Champagne is still good, but just in case it is not drinkable after 38 years in the bottle, I'll chill a second bottle as plan B.

My friend was a very successful, accomplished surgeon who retired about 20 years ago. He never drank any alcoholic beverages, but many of his patients had given him gifts of various wines and spirits over the years of his active practice. This bottle of Dom Perignon, I believe was one of those gifts.
Although I know it was stored in his cellar over the last two decades, I do not know how it was stored over the previous years.
I'll post my comments about whether it survived.

We received 4 bottles of perrier jouet la belle époque for our wedding. We had two that night with the party. Had one later one then one about 3 yrs ago and it was apple cider vinegar bad! For 120$ cad a bottle yikes! Here we can return bottles to our lcbo if they have gone rancid or taste like the slip and slide water after lightman has used it.

You should be here. The pizza guy quit his job. We put industrial laundry detergent in the pool and about 68' of commercial grade plastic tarp on the floors. Then got a case of canola oil at Sams Club to make things intetesting.
You can't buy beer on Sunday in Indiana(
) so I commondeered a stake bed truck and cleared out the package store up the street. Slapped a $20 on the counter and made haste before the constable showed up.
The cleaning crew and the maintenence guy have knocked off most of the Fireball and have been cuttin a rug in the laundry room.
One guest knew how to hack the cameras and erase most of the footage, he's good people. He gets a bottle of Anejo Resposito to himself.

Sadly, the 38-years-old Dom Perignon was flat and tasted like vinegar.
Nevertheless, my wife and I toasted the new year and our late friend -- using about a quarter teaspoon per sip.
Great memories and great hopes for 2017.
My wife's homemade sausage was the best I have ever eaten -- always a necessary accoutrement for good luck in celebrating the coming in of the new year.
