My take is that I'm simply showing the gear works. I'm not there to give an hour long demo. The buyer needs to do their own vetting by other means. Of course, I'm not selling 8K speakers either, so I see your point. Hence the suggestion of using a neutral location.

I say that if its local then take the money without a demo then and only then arrange a location for him to do a pickup.

Exactly, someone who is buying expensive gear would normally have done their homework and probably listened to them in a shop but didn't want to pay full price. What good is a really long demo anyway? the buyer will most likely not have the same gear as you. Most people want to ensure that it's working. It won't sound the same in your house like it will in the buyers house or even your garage.

I should add the stipulation that I'm talking about unknown buyers. If one of you well established yahoos wants to demo the gear in my system, not a problem, but an unknown person off craigslist, ebay, etc, no way.

You mean, you're not part of the "Fairly Artistic & Radical Texas Shorts Committee". They like to be called FARTS for short <--no pun there.

I thought other members had reported you had a problem in this area...

Joey is pulling out all the stops and having all the FARTS he knows there to protect him incase something smells funny.

This never hurts, even if they sit in the other room while you do the demo and conduct business.

I think the id request is more than fair and would also enquire to make certain the info was current. The idea would be to do a bit of google to see if anything strange comes back but you are also then able to look at the address provided to see if they are in a position to buy $8,000 speakers. With the name and address your tax office will allow you to verify the basics.

If someone is renting a flea bag house in a bad part of town be careful. If the person is the owner of record in a nice home/neighborhood then you can feel better. Do your due dillagince here doc and you should be fine. PM me if you want me to help.

I have a relative who is in law enforcement. I have had him at my house once when a person stopped bye to demo an amp.

Does your employer have a security staff? Someone you know in the department who might be willing to be present during the demo?

Agreed... I found the guy online. He lives in a nice part of town and has a 7 figure house. I'll talk to him on the phone and see if anything else pops up on my radar. Sounds pretty legit, the VP of United Rentals.

I found his picture on the United Rentals website. I think all I have to do now is get a picture ID and if it matches, I think he's legit.

I'll probably offer him my picture ID also so that's our swap, it's an even swap. Atleast he'll know who he is dealing with and not some random guy who's going to jump him for his money.

... I'll have Skip do that for me.

    JUST KIDDING!!!

That can't be the only determining factor though. I live in a fleabag apartment and would never rob someone or anything of the sort.

I know... but you're a vetted guy. I'd leave you in my house alone and I wouldn't feel threatened.

This guy, I'm going to have to vet him through other means. He seems to be pretty well off and he can afford this gear if he is who he says he is.

He has not haggled with me... I wonder if I should start the price discussion before he walks through the door to keep the transaction simple.

And how should I take payment? All cash? Or should I take him to the bank? I know for sure I will not take personal checks. I think I'm going to ask for all cash. And I'm going to have deposited immediately to make sure it is legit?

I mean you really can't fake cash right? Atleast not like 8K worth of cash... maybe if it was like 6 figures I could see how someone could go through the trouble of faking cash.

For the love of God just don't wear those shorts he won't take you seriously, excuse me son, is your dad home?

So far he sounds legit. Like I said a person buying these have done their homework and most likely auditioned them before. He knows what he wants and doesn't want to pay full price. As far as payment unless you can agree to price ahead of time it seems like cash would be the only way. I certainly wouldn't want to go with the seller to the bank, how do I know he's not the criminal who will rob me once I take out a certified cheque or cash and not have speakers in my possession. He's probably just as nervous as you.

Good point willow except for the shorts.

I will discuss pricing ahead and suggest cash.

Very few people in our society rob people. The simple thought being someone in a million dollar home is more likely to be a legit buyer for $10,000 speakers than someone living check to check in a low income area. It was not intented to suggest people of lower means are going to try to rip somone off it is about the likely ability to be a real buyer.

Will there be exceptions to the above? Of course, but they will be exceptions not the general rule.

Some people set it up with the buyer that once he sees the product and makes the buy decision he can jump on the sellers internet (or his own device) and pay via paypal. He could either put it on a card and pay you an extra 3% or pay via checking or savings account with no extra paypal fees. This is the best setup I've been involved with as a buyer. I've done it twice, once for $2200 and the other for $8K. The thought of getting $8K cash and carrying it around people I don't know would have been a deal breaker for me.

I received email from him, we decided to meet first at a neutral location and I will be packing heat.

We meet and if he doesn't look shady and he is indeed who he says he is then I lead him to my house. He says he will pay cash.

It sounds like the guy is legit Joey. Good idea to meet somewhere neutral first, good for both of you.

If he is also well off, he is also likely concerned about you not being who you say you are.

You're letting someone into your home, and he is guy walking around with $8k+ in cash. Two people with plenty to worry about.

How do we know Joey doesn't have a violent past of kidnapping potential speaker buyers.
I'm, now, more in fear for the guy wanting to buy his speakers!

    Joey's an organ harvester!!!!!

The shorts he wears are actually his trophies, because we all know, no one in their right mind would go out and buy those.

Maybe offer to meet inside a police station ,sit down for awhile and discuss how to make this an easy, hassle free transaction for both parties. This is becoming more and more popular with people doing CL transactions. In this case, there's the issue of how buyer is going to remove safely the speakers he's just paid for , removing any liability from Joey the seller.Hopefully all goes super smooth and each party is happy with the outcome. Recently sold a used truck , buyer agreed to buy insurance on truck and to pay set amount in cash. We met buyer inside of my bank, buyer paid $9000 in cash , received title and deal was sealed.
