Low ball offers on audiogon for speakers

Never seen this before.

Selling my 802d2.... Where do these people get off with these ultra low ball offers?

Some guy with zero feedback just sent me an offer for 5,000$. I wish I could just send an e-slap across the audiogon message system.

I guess market is not good.

  • It seems to be a buyers market. I had listed a 50th anniversary Mc275 and got hit with a barrage of sub $1,000 offers. I am with you on the e-slap idea.

    The 50th anniversary Mc275 never got the love of the older units and tends to be scorned by the purists but is still a pretty decent piece.

    Good luck and keep the faith. It took forever for me to sell the amp but the right buyer did come along eventually. It seems there are more people with high end gear for sale than there are high end buyers.

    You are welcome to store your speakers at my house if they are in your way. B)

    @Joey_V,

    To get back to a more serious discussion of your topic.

    My experience in purchasing NEW gear in this range has been that you can usually get a 25-30% discount, if you find the right dealer and are a patient negotiator. Those who are impatient, pay a lot more. Of course, very high-end gear that is essentially built-to-order is a different story.

    I was looking at some B&W 802Ds a couple of years back and could have purchased them at a discount in that range.

    This means that an experienced buyer of a used pair is going to start thinking about his/her offer at the discounted price, not the MSRP. Let's say that, at a 25% discount, this beginning number is $11,250.

    This buyer is, then, likely to expect about a 30% discount on a two-years-old pair that shows any signs of wear and tear, such as you have described in your listing. This yields a number of $7,875.

    So, I would say that: 1) The $5,000 offer is definitely a low-ball offer that should simply be ignored. 2) Your asking price of $9,250 on Audiogon, is likely to be considered a ceiling and a starting point for negotiating a lower price. 3) The $7,500 offer was likely a serious offer to which a counter offer might have been an appropriate step toward a mutually agreed price.

    I assume you have given serious thought to the lowest offer that you are willing to accept. If this is $9,250, I would say you are not likely to get it.

    Just my thoughts.

    Beginning number is skewed as 11250+ tax or freight. Either adds about 800.

    Total cost is atleast 12000-12500.

    About 4-5 years ago, I had an opportunity to get a mint pair of 802D2 for about 9K. So, fast forward a few years and 7.5K or 8K in today's market value is not too bad. You just need to wait for a more serious buyers.

    try telling him you will split the difference, that's $8375. i find a lot of times buyers look at this as a fair compromise and you get more than your lowest price.

    It was the best I could come up with on the fly to get past Vanilla's censor. I would have offered to do it myself but no one wants to watch that.

    If someone was close with $7500 the the old "I will split the difference with you" as marvda1 pointed out will often get you where you wanted to be at your minimum.

    I could not speak to audio prices but can say the prices on vintage and high end camera lenses are down anywhere form 40% to 60% over the last five years for anything in the $10,000+ range.

    Seems to be the case with low ball offers on the gon. My esoteric player I sold had the same thing happen where I got a ton of offers at 400-500 and had to wait about a week to get the offers I would expect. Same thing when I sold some speakers as well.

    @F1nut,

    You took the words right out of my mouth! :)

    I live in tax-free New Hampshire, and I would have picked up the speakers myself. You can't add in your specific tax and freight costs, because their different for folks in different places.

    The buyer of your speakers, furthermore, will have his/her own freight costs.
