I'd take the $5K, sell my Audio Research Reference 3 and get an ARC Ref 5 SE. Why, it's better than the Ref 3 and the non SE Ref 5. ;)

If I had $5000.00 to spend on a preamp , I'd probably look into DAC's with built in Preamps. Reason for me is that I would not be using any other source for music other then a Computer. I would want a USB connection A to B and I'm cool.
I would seriously consider the NAD Master Series M12 it's a bit under your budget which usually sells for around $3500.0. I would take the rest of the budget and put it towards a NAD M22 Power amp and finish off the system Which sells for around $2999.

I like Jesse's take. A quality TUBE pre-amp is hard to beat! And those look like great choices.

DACs? Yeah that's important too. But I'm old school on that since a lot of my music is CD and some SACD, a good TUBE CD/SACD player with a coax or USB IN for whatever digital music you might have is what I would consider.

I would go on vacation with the $5K since my system in its current configuration is sounding most excellent. When you find that sweet spot, that synergy, that **** eating grin every time you sit down to listen, it's best to enjoy it for awhile since it took so damn long to get there. :p

If I had to make a move probably look at Cary or most definitely Pass.

Why put a $$ figure on it? $$ ain't everything.

Last time this came up for me I decided on the Manley Jumbo Shrimp and pocketed the other $2500. Best sounding preamp I've heard to date. http://www.manley.com/products/view/mspr
