    hdcd usually sounds better for the same reason SACD does...they remaster them first, doing a better job. It's more about the attention paid mastering, than it is the format, IMHO.

    Where did you get that information?

    Any HDCD CD I've ever come across is exactly the same transfer as a redbook, just has the HDCD information in the bitstream for the I/C chip to decode. It's an algorithm that basically upsamples from 16 bit to quasi - 20 bit. It's not a separate layer like SACD...........it's much more rudimentary hence the reason it became quickly obsolete as digital technology moved forward and real 20 bit and beyond recordings were made and decoded.

    The HDCD layer (algorithm) is added at the same time the cd is being manufactured and is part of the redbook playback process.

    These aren't reissued or remastered at a later date, they were a 1 and done thing at the time of manufacture.
