SDA-1 Signature replacement tweeters

Hi,

I have two dead tweeters on my speakers (one dead on each speaker). Otherwise the speakers are working properly. I would like to keep these speakers as original as possible. Any suggestions as to what I should do for parts? source/model number.

Thanks
Troy

Troy, you need to be more specific as to the model you have. Pictures are wonderful.

That said, keeping them as original as possible is doing nothing more than robbing you of mo' better sound.

sounds like he has the same as me Jesse SDA1 Signature with side by side SL1000 tweeters slight chance they are SL2000. I'm guessing they also have the dimensional tweeters and most just turn those off by taking out the fuse. Replacement at this point are going to be the RDO-194 BUT you will need to do routing work on the old holes if they had SL1000 as the hole will push the SL2000 or rdo-194's tabs in creating too much stress on them.

These are photos that match what I have now (not the actual photos) My speakers have the signature plate with the side by side tweeters (aluminum plate). If not the originals what tweeters would you reccommend?

    Thanks Troy

Those are SL1000's. Refer to the post above yours.

Thanks - you are correct about the SL1000 on the units. I have the original manuals and paperwork from these speakers (the 2 previous owners kept everything!). it looks like 2 tweeters were replaced in 1994 and the other 2 have now given up the ghost. Appears to me like the RDO-194 is the way to go. I am presuming I should change all 4 for the RDO's in that case? Any recommended sources?

Most would recommend you replace the stereo tweeters with RDO-194's and unhook the dimensional tweeters completely.

    ^This^

In addition, the original caps are WAY past their useful life span and were really crappy to begin with. Upgrading those and the resistors will net sonic improvements that will make your jaw drop. Other worthwhile improvements include adding spikes, adding Dynamat to the baskets and installing Hurricane nuts for the drivers/PR's. All of those improvements do not change the look of the speakers.

The tweeters may be unhooked by previous owner as the dimensional tweeters are reported to add a weird, phasey effect that most find annoying. In any case you'll probably like the sound better by replacing only 1 tweeter in each cabinet and leaving the dimensional one disconnected but in place.

Don't know which is which, but I'm sure others on the forum do.

You are looking at close to 3-500 to recap depending on caps. I used all sonicaps on mine. You do not need to unhook anything just take out the fuse. Putting new tweeters in involves router work on the holes and the brass plate also is in the way. You will need to modify the tweeter bezel some to fit right.

By the way Jesse helped me a ton with more than a dozen pm's between us the man is a vast noggin of knowledge. You must take your time with the 2 piece boards go slow and for gods sake do one at a time, remember they are mirror image.
  • Thanks to everyone for their help. So if I understand correctly the inside tweeters are the ones that I need operational and the outside tweeters are the dimensional tweeters, not required!? Then the capacitors need to be changed, which I can do as I have changed integrated circuits before.

Correct, and if you are disconnecting the dimensional tweeters, the hi-pass section of the dimensional half of the crossovers do not have to be upgraded.
