For those of us up there post wise, why not look back and share your first post and maybe share what you've learned since then.

Here is mine in Jan of 2009. My girlfriend (now wife) was looking to buy me some T90e speakers and I came here looking for advice..
So I am purchasing some T90e's (Euro version of the monitor 60's) this weekend and want to make sure the reciever I have wont blow them up (or make them sound nasty). Its from a Sony Home Theater in a box system found here. The specs for the amplifier are as follows:

Amplifier
Power Consumption (in Operation) : 170 W
Power Requirements : AC 120V, 60 Hz
Audio Power Output : 900W (140w x 5 + 200w (1KHz, 10% THD)); 900W (140w x 5 + 200w (1KHz, 10% THD))

Anyone see these specs as being a problem?

I will be replacing it in the near future with a Yamaha 7.1 reciever so I can bi-amp the fronts. Yes I also realize bi-amping requires an additional amp, however the Yamaha does have pre-outs for exactly that purpose :D

I never moved to that Yamaha, instead going to an Integra DTR 5.9 which I had until about a month ago. I also then bought a Carver 5 channel amp to run those speakers, and then eventually my LSi setup...

**side note** IIRC I can trace those same T90e's from me to @daboyz, then to @hochpt21, then to @dromunds where they are still in use IIRC...

I've thrown through a bunch of different gear in my setup and I wont bore you with the details.

I've learned to try something before dismissing it out of hand, find a group of folks with similar sonic tastes as you and then ANNOY THE HELL out of them with random thoughts and use them as a sounding board . And most importantly I've learned It only matters how it sounds to you!

It can be fun to look back at where you started.

So go ahead, peel back the clock and post your first post

    Hello all,

I'm sure you vets are used to seeing >20 post newbies every year in your forums around the holidays, but I want to say that I have learned more in the last couple weeks than I ever thought possible...thanks to you. Basically, all my audio equipment is new to me within the last year so I am just figuring things out. I'm starting to get the desire (and budget) to really appreciate quality audio and hope this is the start of some fun. Thanks in advance to all for advice and patience.

I was right about it being the start of some fun. And I was also correct about the advice and patience :)

You can run a search for your username as the "Author" to pull just your posts. You can then limit that search with a date. I clicked on my profile to find my "member since" date, and then just did a search for any post from me within 2 months of my member since date....

Hey All - finally joined the Polk Club with some Monitor 5b's.

I am wondering if I could get some information/confirmation on:

    a. I believe these to be the SL1000 Tweeters due to no hole and silver face plate? (& do those mid drivers look original?)

    b. Is it worth the difference (sonically) to be looking around for the old Peerless Tweeters?

    c. Can anyone tell me the difference between the Monitor 5, 5a, 5b, 5jr?

I heard these Monitor 5's a long time ago (and loved them) while buying my first set of speakers in college, but I made the choice (bad) to get more watts in a reciever and less speaker... you know how it was... I really wanted to try the Monitor 7's or 10's this time but I thought size-wise these would be more easily slipped by the Mrs.

Anyway - looking forward to trying these out as my new fronts - (I have an inexpensive BIC 10" powered sub w/variable crossover to handle the really lows) and 8" two way vintage (re-coned w/new crossovers) AR's for the rear.
Running a little HK AVR20II for reciever with a Carver Sonic Hologram Generator for sounds.

Thanks for any info - this is a great site with lots of information - I just got confused with all the tweeter talk ... foam surround, silver dome, silver face, etc...

Mine was 10/2012. I had just gotten my SDA's and wanted to know about them and what sort of amps to use.

Since then, I've learned that I really don't know much more now then when I started here. :(

I just wanted to get your assessment of my setup.

    Sony KV-32XBR45 TV
Denon 3802 Receiver (I now have a Sunfire TGP III & Sunfire CG 5 405WPC amp)
Rotel 855 CD Player (I now have a Rotel RDC-1072)
    Onkyo TA2600 Tape Deck
    Pioneer 47A DVD
Sony SLV-799HF VCR (This is gone)
    Polk RTA-8T Main Speakers
    Boston 920 Center Speakers
Boston PV600 Sub Woofer (Have added a DSW 400 pro)

I just switched my interconnect wire from CD to receiver to
Monster Cable 850I (I'm hearing stuff out of my cd's I never heard before!!!!) That was $80.00 well spent. (Now have all BJC IC's except for the subs)

I would love to go to full surround, but as it is, I'm already shaking the walls & floor when an explosion happens.

Any other tweaks I can add that you can think of?

    Thanks.

What I have learned is to trust my instincts and that power does make a big difference.

Turned up a couple of early posts, have not yet located the first. The "problem"? I was already having a dialog with Doro on the Circuit City forums for a year and a half or so before I joined the Polk forums. In fact, it was Dorokusai who prompted me to join, as we were kind of pushing Polk on the CC forums. I bought my first Polks (which I still have for a HT system from CC-M70s, CS2, M30s and a PSW12, the last is doing basement duty at this point). I then picked up my Onkyo 805 to power that). I joined in 2008 because I registered my speakers at that time).

So before I got here I believe I had well over 1500 posts on the old CC forums. I got to meet Mark (doro) and Al, Russ and a number of others at a small "meet" at Noah's in Pa. where Russ (lightman1) was also kind enough to have transported my SDA 2Bs from N.C. to the mini-fest.

By the time I started posting here, I'd already gone through a lot, so what is best said here is what more I learned here.

Along with Cathy, quality POWER matters!

    Tubes add soul (H9)!

Nelson Pass is one heck of an engineer! Along with a number of others. (Am still running a Nakamichi CA-5 as my main pre-amp on my SS system).

    Tube CDPs rule! Love them.

ICE amps are a good go to for HT. But PRE-OUTS on an AVR are a necessity!

Two channel is where "music" lives! Put most of your money into THIS!

A big honking SUB or two or more by SVS or HSU, etc. will take your HT to the next level. Along with an external power amp.

Synergy is an elusive but essential pursuit that takes many twists and turns and where "everything" matters!

    TROLLS love this forum!!!

Polkies, regardless of their politics are generally great in person. It doesn't matter how much you go at each other, there is always a coming together and unity at PolkFests and when you meet face-to-face.

They are also among the most generous individuals around. Always willing to help, give, lend a helping hand, or even equipment. And the KARMAs here are off the charts!

The Fleamarket is a great thing! Got my SDAs, NAD amp, Technics TT, spare drivers, Monitor 5As, Adcom 545, LSi-7s, etc. from fellow Polikies at great prices there!

I could go on and on...but you get the idea!

    Hi PROFESSIONALS,

I come to you in need of assistance in the world of audio. I have recently (so recently they have the styro-foam smells still lingering off them) purchased used and new Polk Speakers from across the internet in what i have told the little lady will "Change the way we sit on the couch!"...needless to say she's angry and all future purchases have to be approved before buying. :p:p

Anywho, I am basically looking for setup techniques on calibration on the receiver and sub's end. I have searched this forum in hopes of finding another fellow/fillet <--(female audio listener?) in the same boat but my searches come up empty. Searched around on the Al Gore inspired internet but every website says something different or i have to be an audio junkie to understand the lingo.

Where do i begin?...the speakers make noise! YES! Step one complete. I understand the whole break-in period knowing the speakers will sound differently 6 months down the road from what they sound like now. How do i make them make the ear-gasmic sound that i have read in about 200 threads in the past months. (I know A5's aren't going to make that sound alone nor with the 606) Between the Hz on the speakers/sub and the Hz on the receiver, my brain Hz.

If i have to spend, it is an option but it has to be budget friendly and not clearly visible on the credit card bill. This is the starter setup which will hopefully blossom into a beautiful butterfly years down the road.

Can someone point me in the right or left direction. You will be rewarded handsomely with gold and women......i lied, just maybe a smiley face like this one :)....but better!

I'm hoping to resurrect these speakers, which I damaged some years ago and have had stored since. I somewhat abused them once, attempting to fill a too-large room for my buddy who was getting married on the cheap--the tweeters in both speakers have been silent since. No buzzing, or any noise of any kind. Drivers seem OK.

Anyway, my question is how do I diagnose the problem definitively? My assumption is that it's the tweeters themselves, but I suppose it could be somewhere else?

Thanks in advance for your replies. You've got a nice forum here.

    Cheers,
    Jay

Contrary to the opinions of some, Jesse was highly welcoming to this noob and invited me to stick around. I did.

I've learned that this is my favorite forum on the web.

I've learned that its fun to do some mild mods (5jr+ became RTA11TL became modded, which became SDA2B studios which became TL'd; Bought an Adcom GDA600 DAC and modded power supply/opamps/analog board with the Fred/George Daniel mods, taking some tutelage from accomplished modder Rich (SCompRacer).

I've learned that its a bit too fun to dream about (and sometimes pull the trigger on) equipment upgrades.

I've learned that I don't post nearly as often as EndersShadow (or many of youse guys). :p

How do you search by author? There is just a basic search box on the top right.

When I go to my "discussions" from my profile page it gets buggy. I click 'more discussions' on the bottom and it just keeps looping the same set of threads started by me instead of continuing to go to older ones.

    Well, here's one way :-P

Click "Go" next to the "Search" box. It'll open a page with a "Search" box, too... but now there's a little down arrow next to it. Click on that, and a bunch of search options open up.

Also, would running a dedicated outlet for my HT equipment be a good idea or a waste of money. The reason I ask is that I heard a small pop in my speakers a few weeks ago when I turned off my light switch.

Any opinions, or better yet, can anyone provide facts.

My first post in 2012 was a question about some equipment my friend has that he doesn't use. I didn't really get an answer, but that probably means it's not worth bothering with. He still has the preamp and amp.

"Is anyone on here familiar with either the Marantz AV-9000 THX Pre amp or the Kenwood KM-X1 amp? I know very little about amps, other than the integrated ones I used to own in the 70's."

In January 2012, having been referred to the Forum by the folks at Perreaux in New Zealand to get information about how to build a "Dreadnought" to solve the problem of trying to drive my newly acquired SDA SRS1.2a speakers with non-common ground Perreaux mono blocks, I read Darqueknight's comprehensive thread on the subject, built a "primitive" Dreadnought, and mustered the courage to post my "results" on that thread in July 2012.

What have I learned since that first post:
    1. Trust DarqueKnight! Boy, was I lucky to have tapped into his wisdom by way of my first post, although the consequences of reading about his improvements to his system(s) has proven to be somewhat costly, as I attempt to follow -- to some extent -- the trail he has blazed for us.
    2. Also, trust F1nut, but always read his pithy posts with close scrutiny -- so as not to miss his wry humor!
    3. Trust VR3 Mods with crossover rebuilds and upgrades (He's done four for me, and they have all been great. He's also a pleasure to work with.), which is not to say that there aren't other guys on the Forum who also do great work of this kind -- e.g., westmassguy.
    4. The vast majority of guys and gals on this Forum are generous with advice, good-humored, and knowledgeable about things audio.
    5. The guys and gals on this Forum are also highly diverse and multi-talented.
    6. Trolls are anathema -- and I didn't even know what a "troll" in this sense was before I joined this Forum.
    7. Above all, I have learned a lot about what I don't know, which means I can be educated! Given how little I knew about audio "stuff" when I joined, my learning "stuff" has been easy, but the process is far, far from over!
I could keep going, but I'm not even sure I qualify to post in this thread! I'm still a newbie in my own mind!

Any way, I think this was a great thread to start, and I want to thank everybody for their contributions to the Forum over the almost four years I've been reading it.

My first post - I think. They aren't dated, only by month.
I found a pair of RTA-12b's for sale and I think I desperately want them. What should I look for when I see/hear them before making a decision to buy them? My dad has SDA-SRS 2.3's and I have wanted them my entire life but I'm thinking this may be a good starting point, am I correct?

Another question is I remember 2 of the drivers on the 2.3's (on each speaker so 4 total) had this thick ring on them. I don't know how to describe it, like a donut really. What were those and why don't you see them on any other speakers from this era from Polk?

Finally, I will be driving these RTA-12b's with a Yamaha RX-V667. I know it's a bagillion channeled A/V reciever that isn't really suited for what I'm aiming for but will it suffice?

In 2 years and 4 months I have gone from RTA-12B's, Home Depot speaker wire, and an entry level AVR to the same speakers with a nearly (2 models away) TOTL AVR, 350 watt B&K amplifier, vintage Polk center and rear speakers, got into vinyl (Yamaha deck, and both a Pro-ject Phono Box SE II phono preamp and a Denon MC cart on the way), and upgraded my speakers cables to entry level MIT's.

Where will I be in another 2 years, I wonder?

When we moved into this house 3 years ago, I put them on the short wall because there's a wet bar (80's house) on one of the long walls.

After reading some of the placement threads on this site and a few minutes with a tape measure, I asked the wife what she would think about turning around our den. She said put it wherever I'm happy with it because she never goes down there anyway. Score!! The couch covers up part of the wetbar but now I don't have to go far to pour another bourbon! Maybe I'll rip out the wetbar one day, then again, I don't have to go far to pour another bourbon!

SDA's are 7 feet inside to inside, 5 inches off the wall, and more than 4 feet on the outsides. Listening position is about 7-1/2 feet back. Wow, I forgot how good these things sound when you put them in the right place. Now I just need those new tweeters and capacitors. Thanks to this forum for rekindling my interest. Prior to finding this place, I hadn't turned them on more than a couple of times in the last several years. Well, speaking of SDAs and bourbon ... I think I will.

I learned that my memory of when I thought I changed names is wrong. LOL.

First post under this alias in June 2008.

"The next step in trying to get the best possible sound from my system is to replace my TV. Currently, I have a 57" Hitachi digital monitor CRT rear projection set Purchased new in 2004. The picture is great, especially after I had it calibrated to ISF specifications.

The problem is the top part is essentially a hollow 57" plastic box which vibrates with low frequencies. Since I doubt I can take it apart and stiffen the box part to stop the vibrations, I have decided to replace it. But, the replacement must be at least 57".

I am thinking of getting a projector and screen, which should eliminate the vibration part, and give me a more open room. The room is 11' long and I want to have the screen at one end, and hang the projector from the ceiling at the other end. After all is said and down, assume a distance of 8-9 feet between projector and screen.

My question is, will this be a sufficient distance to at least get a 57" picture, and hopefully a larger picture?"

I still have the TV, and I learned that one does not need to buy something new to get better performance. A tweak here and there can work wonders.

Even more important, I learned that cables, clean power, and vibration control matter more than the actual gear. That is what allows the gear to work at its best.

I don't know what my first post was but what I learned was: I should have stayed on the other BB where I was just ignored. I hung around this one and you guys helped me spend more money than I had ever imagined on gear. But I must say it was money well spent compared to what lawyers cost for some of the other fun that I have had.

i have had my axioms m22s for over 4 months now... happily connected to my yamaha rx-v530 receiver and into my computer... along with the svs sub. i figured i was in audio bliss.... until last week.

last week, being bored and off from work and my friends and girlfriend at work, i decided to bring my m22s to the local audioshop, TWEETER, for a shootout between the seemingly VAUNTED m22s and the local selection they had there. i walked in quite proudly with my axioms arm in arm. i met with Dave, the salesperson with whom i have done a lot of business with in the past (klipsch speakers, yamaha receivers)... and i asked to demo the boston acoustics, the sapphires, the polks, and the sonus fabers bookshelves.... all against my axiom m22s in typical AB format.

well.... let me tell you this -
boston's sound fuller but maybe a little boxy coloration was present... not really impressed by the midrange especially at $800 a pair.
the sonus - i didnt really find striking, very balanced though and better overall than the m22s, i wasnt surprised... at $1400 a pair, the sonus had BETTER been the better speaker.
the sapphires were... umm... garbage... regardless of price.

    onto the polks...
the rti - surprisingly the rti bookshelves (and the floorstanding speakers too) had a larger, wider horizontal soundstage than the m22s - the m22s sounded compromised next to the rtis. the rtis in general (the 4 and the 6) extended lower and, thus, sounded a bit fuller than the m22s did. the midrange was a little more prominent in the m22s and beat the rtis in this aspect hands down. also, the rti's tweeter, i felt, was the weakest link in the rti arsenal. the highs became overbearing at times... and was very sibilant (the "t" and "s" were OVERpronounced) to the extent that i had to have Dave turn down the speakers. this match went to the axioms, which had a much sweeter high end, despite lacking the lateral soundstage relative to the rti 4 and 6.

then, on came the lsi demo. first up was the lsi7... soundstage opened up real wide... i mean... REALLY wide... far far greater than my axioms could ever accomplish. the midrange was at par with the m22s - very detailed and succinct... everything was there, if it was on the recording - the lsi was able to reproduce it and shoot it out with the utmost precision and imaging.... wow indeed! the bass of the lsi7 totally gave the axiom m22s a spanking in the rear end. the lsi7 had approximately 2/3 to a full octave of extension over the m22s (which at this point confirmed my suspicions of the m22s having a rather ANEMIC bass response). there was a guitar riff on a song (i forget the name, something about "i can be your bodyguard, i can be your long lost pal.. i think, i cant remember - famous 80s song though, wonderfully mastered)... the m22s reproduced the riff, but the lsi7 REPRODUCED the riff with EMOTION! my god... i was stunned. lastly, the lsi7 had better highs... yes you heard it, BETTER highs, the Vifa 25XT ring radiator is AMAZING!!! no wonder av123.com's Onix Reference and Rocket Speakers use it (not to mention krell and nohr as well)... god, this thing isnt overbearing at all and yet, is as detailed and precise as the metal dome (aluminum or titanium in this case) tweeters!! the sibilance was controlled on the lsi7, in fact, the m22s became sibilant far before the lsi7 ever did.

needless to say, the m22s lost handily to the lsi7s... by a great margin as well.

the lsi9 were next up on the demo... and this even upped the slaughter... in fact, pretty much annihilated the m22s. i dont think that you would even need to hear another recap of a slaughter.. lets just leave it at slaughter... picture the m22s being ripped to its separate components kind of slaughter.

i was so shocked that i forgot to AB the lsi7 verus the lsi9 to hear the differences between the two. btw, i should go back today and check out the differences between the two.

i also compared the lsi7 to the paradigm reference 20s ($800/pr), the paradigm reference signature 2 ($2300/pr), and the BW nautilus 805 bookshelf ($2000/pr). and surprisingly enough, the polks RAN with the big boys! lateral soundstage may have been a wee better on the paradigms but not by much... and the polks recoup this loss by having a superior tweeter which handled the highs far better than even the paradigm s2 flagship 2-way bookshelf could!! amazing!

the polk lsi 7 even handily gave the bw nautilus a run for its money, and in the end, i felt that the lsi7 had a more natural and balanced sound relative to the nautilus. 700$ versus 2000$ anyone??

i think though, that the lsi7 lacked the extension in comparison to the bw and the paradigms... just by very little... im sure the 9s out-extened the three big boys.

i would love to hear the lsi9 in direct AB comparison with the great Paradigm Signature 4... now this would be interesting....

anyway, i bought the lsi7 and am awaiting its arrival... once it gets here, i shall compare it to my m22s on my own system and the final decision will be made. most likely, i will end up selling the OVERHYPED m22s (psh.. i am so angry that i bought into all the axiom hoopla and reviews  ) and buying another pair of Lsi speakers... perhaps another pair of 7s or perhaps the 9s.

a full lsi speaker set paired with an svs sub... this should make for an even better computer speaker system dont u think? :D

lastly, thanks for reading my short review..... does anyone have any comments on the real differences between the lsi7 and the lsi9? i looked on the polk site for detailed specifications and i found out that by looking at the crossover details, the lsi9 has a separate drive solely for sub 200hz freq... i assume this would mean that the lsi 9 would have better bass extension and overall output?

also, is there any discernable tonality difference between the two? is the lsi9 more airy? does it reproduce more midrange?

i may just have to go to Tweeter today to find out.

That was in 2004... Trying to get some cool computer speakers.

    My first post:
I want to try Flac files from my laptop to my AVR. The AVR will play Flac files but I need some kind of sharing software via DLNA on my laptop. I did download the codec for WMP and now WMP will play Flac files but the AVR will not. I'm new to this and want to hear what Flac files sound like. I got some sample files from HDtracks.

Can anyone point me in the right direction and/or tell me what software I need. I'm running Windows 7.

    Thanks

What I've learned here is going with separates was a big improvement over feeding everything through an AVR. Also getting back into vinyl was the best thing I've done so far in this hobby and the more you try new things to better the sound the more enjoyment you get out of this hobby.

For the life of me, I could not find my 1st post. Most likely something stupid.
I've learned there are some truly great members, who give freely of their knowledge about all things audio. I've learned that cables do make a difference, that synergy, burn-in, break-in are real. I've learned there are some really, really smart, passionate members, who forgot what I know. I've also learned how to spot Trolls and "Contrary Mary's", and have learned to just move on. I've learned you can make great friends across the miles. I've learned you can take a hobby, and turn it into a business, and actually make a living doing it.

    Hi,

I have recently purchased RM6600 speaker system with PSW250 sub along with Onkyo TX-DS494 receiver. The speaker and subwoofer's manual suggests to connect the subwoofer using front speaker outs from the receiver and then connect front speakers to speaker out on the sub. It also suggests to setup front speakers as LARGE on the receiver and also set subwoofer to NO.

On the Onkyo TX-DS494 there is no setting for selecting only front speakres as LARGE, It has a setting for setting subwoofer to NO (Which then assumes that recivers is connected to large speakers). So far I am using this setting along with the above connection method.

Is this the right setup?. My concern is that now receiver is sending low frequencies to all channels, and only front ones get filtered signal due to sub's crossover. The surround channel and center channel are still getting the low frequencies which are below their frequncy range (the spec syas that the freq. range is 130Hz to 25 KHz). What will be the effect of this on speakers perfomrnace and sound quality?.

    Any opinions wil be appreciated.

I don't remember. It was probably something lame as it was like 2002 and people were still treating forums and message boards like they were writing letters. You know, stuff like "Hi, my name is Dave. I'm new here! I like puppy dogs, lollipops and rainbows. They all fly out of my butt regularly. I have a nice stereo. Do you have a nice stereo too?"

    Etc.

As far as what have I learned?

    Nothing.

But we were all expecting that, weren't we?

You learned that if you wanted a pair of speakers like mine, you'd have to almost drive clear up to Canada to get them.

You learned that if there was something you needed, it usually wouldn't take more than a short drive over here to get it.

YOU, learned an awful lot in your time here, and spread it around to boot. So I don't believe you when you say you learned nothing since 2002. Now there's a guy out there who said he hasn't learned anything since coming here in 2004. Him, I believe. Some folks are not trainable and teachable.
