Monitor 10A tweeters.{"dim" sounding}

I recently purchased a pair of PA M10As. They're currently hooked up to a Kenwood KR-3600 receiver, and they sound great! Apart from one of the tweeters. I know the fuses are incorrect (a 3amp is currently in each unit), but one of the drivers isn't producing high fqz like the other. Its sort of "dim" sounding, not as clear or pronounced. Any particular reason for this lack in performance?

1a fast blow. Make sure its clean contact. Try changing tweeters around from one cabinet to the other-to see if it follows. If it follows its a bad tweet...
-
Make sure all speaker wires are on correct. As you know those xrossovers are old. Put glue around the woofer magnets to prevent Shifting Magnet from happening-is a cheap tip also. Report back..

There should be quick connects, somebody has had those open before.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

The 10As have Peerless Tweeters, which were soldered from the factory, as were many of the SL1000s after Peerless ceased production.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Not to often you will get the #'s consecutively even when they were bought new..

Don't obsess on serial numbers. They really don't mean anything anymore, with the exception of certain SDA models. As long as the driver compliment and crossovers are the same, you're good.Home Theater/2 Channel:

I have no idea. I only know what i have seen on mine & other Monitor or SDA speakers. ...... (This has nothing to do with OP) This Vannila c r a p has got to go. You post stuff & it gets moved around & put where IT wants to put it. W T F..

I just went through a crossover rebuild on my Polk 7A's, peerless. The tweeters are soldered on mine. I de-soldered and installed quick connects. I noticed the same dull sounding tweeter on one speaker. I swapped tweeters to rule out the crossovers, no change. Re-checked all the wiring, looked good. Replaced the tweeter with a used Peerless from a 7B, which fixed the problem. Most likely you have a bad tweeter. BTW both my tweeters ( including the bad one ) ohmed out at 7.6 & 7.8.

Larry's rings or Hurricane nuts from PE. Larry ring are made very good & when you tighten them up you "know" their in there good. Do the tweeter brackets & binding plate while your at it...... If your stock seal is not ripped - keep the gasket you have. They should be still good VS replacement. Thats how i did/do all mine & the ones im having WMG do now..

I took both Tweeters out of the cabinets (one at a time) and found that both were soldered to their wires (to try your suggestion). Is this correct?2ch rig: Speakers: Magnepan LRS w/Magna Riser stands Preamplifier: Parasound P5 Amplifier: Parasound A23 CDP: Pioneer DV-563A Cables: Wireworld Equinox 7 XLR ICs, Wireworld Ultraviolet 7 USB, AudioQuest Q2s, AudioQuest NRG X(preamp)

Thanks guys, I'm going to start with putting correct fuses in each unit and check the wiring to make sure they're in phase with one another later today.2ch rig: Speakers: Magnepan LRS w/Magna Riser stands Preamplifier: Parasound P5 Amplifier: Parasound A23 CDP: Pioneer DV-563A Cables: Wireworld Equinox 7 XLR ICs, Wireworld Ultraviolet 7 USB, AudioQuest Q2s, AudioQuest NRG X(preamp)

Was it just the 10's that were soldered? Neither my 5's or RTA-12's are soldered. Haven't opened up my 4's yet.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

My 7A's are soldered.

As someone else mentioned, be sure to clean the fuse holder with contact cleaner, more than likely that will fix the problem (could be a blown fuse too). I strongly advise against desoldering the wire from the tweeter post. I did that to mine and the post fell off with no way to reattach it. Result: had to buy another Peerless tweeter.SDA SRS 2.3TL's

As mentioned, use extreme caution when de-soldering and re-soldering.

Be sure to heat sink when de-soldering and soldering. The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

Perhaps my speakers are the ones that have been changed then, that or Polk just did whatever they felt like doing on a particular day. Mine landed on a quick connect day. Sorry for the confusion OP.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

So is there a way to test the crossover to find out if its the issue and not the tweeter itself?2ch rig: Speakers: Magnepan LRS w/Magna Riser stands Preamplifier: Parasound P5 Amplifier: Parasound A23 CDP: Pioneer DV-563A Cables: Wireworld Equinox 7 XLR ICs, Wireworld Ultraviolet 7 USB, AudioQuest Q2s, AudioQuest NRG X(preamp)

Also I have a new Question Team (not sure if I should start a new post for this one. Pleas advise). So it mite be a silly question but should the serial numbers for a pair of speakers (M10As in question) match?2ch rig: Speakers: Magnepan LRS w/Magna Riser stands Preamplifier: Parasound P5 Amplifier: Parasound A23 CDP: Pioneer DV-563A Cables: Wireworld Equinox 7 XLR ICs, Wireworld Ultraviolet 7 USB, AudioQuest Q2s, AudioQuest NRG X(preamp)

Why risk de-soldering at the terminals ? I'd sever the wire a few inches downstream, and then, strip/re-solder there.

Right on. Well due to my availability this project is going on the back burner for a bit (I'm just glad I finally have a pair of these). But I'll still check in on the forum periodically. As soon as I start working on my pair of 10As I'll start a new post. Hopefully That one will be a little more organized lol.2ch rig: Speakers: Magnepan LRS w/Magna Riser stands Preamplifier: Parasound P5 Amplifier: Parasound A23 CDP: Pioneer DV-563A Cables: Wireworld Equinox 7 XLR ICs, Wireworld Ultraviolet 7 USB, AudioQuest Q2s, AudioQuest NRG X(preamp)
