Where do I start?

I just picked up a pair of RT10's for spare parts for $20. One of the drivers is producing nothing, so I figured I would try to learn something by taking the driver apart. Where do I begin and what should I be looking for inside?

Unfortunately, Polk stopped producing this driver some years ago. There is a company on EBay that is selling a copy of the driver for $89.99, and someday I may do that. However, I bought this pair of speakers (really cheap) for spare parts for my existing RT10's. Now I have a non functioning driver that I just wanted to play with, so was looking for some direction in that.

Which driver is it ? Are you sure it's the driver and not a crossover component that may be toast ?HT SYSTEM-

Good question tonyb, I hadn't thought of that. So I just now swapped the seemingly bad driver (model # MW8002, btw) into a same model cabinet that I know works. Still nothing from the driver.

Here's a good start: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woofer
Sounds like the either the voice coil is burned out, or one of the lead wires that goes from the terminal strip, through the cone, and connects to the voice coil may have a break in it.Home Theater/2 Channel:

westmassguy - Thanks for the link. From what I knew previously about woofers, I was leaning towards some type of interruption of the signal (break in the wire, etc), since when I tried to run a signal there was no visible movement at all.
DSkip, don't I know it. I've already had to do that repair on both of my existing RT10's to correct a hiss/static sound that would go away for a short time when I would lightly press in on the cone.
pitdogg2 - If you are looking at the same one I am, that is the company that has built a reproduction of the MW8002. I may go that way someday, but not just yet.
Thanks all! -
my bad you are correct, that being said they have had made some pretty good reproductions of other speakers used here. Peerless tweeters to be exact. They are good people to deal with.
