Need Help Regarding Monitor 5 PR's

Here's the deal. I bought a pair of Monitor 5A's a while ago and one PR had a tear in the surround. I bought a replacement on eBay. Both original PR's (from my Craigslist set) had 4 screw holes and the cone is smooth to the touch. The replacement I bought has 6 screw holes and the cone has a rough texture. When I tap on each PR the bass sounds different, it's deeper on the original smooth feeling PR.

I would surmise that the replacement I bought is incorrect, but then somebody has some Monitor 5A parts FS and his has the 6 screw rough texture PR. This has me a little confused as to which PR is actually correct. Any advice?

@KennethSwauger possibly?

I have a pair of 5a's with Peerless. Date on the c/o was 1981. Has the 4 hole passive.99roohpf51va.jpg

I made a mistake in the OP. The "other" PR's are 8 screw, not 6.

It's hard to tell from the picture but are the cones smooth or rough?

Hmm. I have an idea. Your Polk logo is on the cabinet, so is mine. I remember @nbrowser saying his logo was attached to the grill. It seems like there are two different 5A's. Ken, can you confirm your grill mounted logo 5A's have 8 screw rough texture PR's as I am guessing they do?

  • My 5As (in the FS thread) have the logo on the cabinet and the PRs looks like this one on ebay.

  • Also, there are 8 holes in the frame, but only 4 mounting screw are used.

Nightfall, what is the SW number? I have a pair of never used SW83's I can sell you if they are the correct PR's for your speakers.

That's the problem. I have one PR that's marked SW80 (the smooth one) and two other PR that are unmarked (both rough texture). The SW80 weighs 303.3 grams, one of the rough textured ones weighs 317.7 grams, and the second rough textured one weighs 320.4 grams

I have, according to their weight, three different 8" PR's and I have no clue what is actually supposed to be in there, nor can I find any kind of information by searching the forum for "Monitor 5 passive radiator"

I was again incorrect in saying that I had a PR with 4 screw holes. It actually has 8 as well, the difference being the SW80 only has the rubber cut out over 4 of them while the other two PR's have all 8 cut out. I'm guessing this info isn't necessary to solve the issue at hand.

Ok, these two have 8 holes in the metal basket, but only four cut out in the rubber.

Perhaps Ken knows the proper SW number for your speakers. Send him a PM.

  • Sounds like the two originals are the same model, with the 2.7 gram difference due to production variances.

I ran into this issue, I found SW80 variations in the coating texture, cone and also rubber thinckness. For example, the 1981 model has a heavier rubber surround than the1989 production.

I have two diferent spares at home, I can send pictures to see if it match yours.

So it would seem every Monitor 5 with an 8" passive uses the same SW83. I wonder what this SW80 I have is out of? RTA-11 possibly?

If you search eBay for "Polk SW80" the two listings right now say they're out of Monitor 5's. Ken is going to contact the person that complied his parts list and see what's going on because it sure seems like some version or other of the Monitor 5 used an SW80 and not the SW83. If he gathers some information I'll post it here.

This is what Ken's contact said
The customer is correct….The old Monitor 5 used an SW80 (or SW83) 8” passive radiator. Kim says we haven’t had these radiator in stock for quite a while.

I assume this means which Monitor 5 variation used SW80 and which variation used SW83 is lost.

I'm going to get a set of SW83 as well as a second SW80 to go with the one I have and just try both, see which sounds better to me in my room.

I did notice slight differences in the bass, for some reason I prefered the radiators with thinner/lighter surround...
  • I have a pair of (what I believe to be) '89 monitor 5s that indeed have the SW80 and the clear sl2000. SW83s are different in weight and diameter on the back looking inti the spider. Which model did you end up using?

I am interested as well. I might guess now that the SW83's were in the Series 2 versions. I don't know if there were any other differences. My initial guess was they switched to the SW83 when they changed to the larger cabinet and MW6502's vs. the 6500's, but that does not appear to be the case.
