When I bought my 10b's back in 83.. I put the spurs to them with an old Bozak 929.. That old amp did em justice too..they sang!...Still have the 10's,but unfortunately that old amp went the way into oblivion some time ago...You found something to hang on to ..never let em go...
  • Hello all,
Didn't make it to the hardware store yesterday. I had a few honey do's to do for my honey since I came home with more old electronics, as she calls them, again. Picked up the Loctite Power Grabber as used by WMG with every intention of gluing the woofers. Unfortunately I turned on the old stereo for a little listen and well it's too late to start now. ;) There's alway tomorrow. :) Listening to my new Aja SHM-CD as I type this. Man these old suckers sound good.

Don't worry, the magnets won't fall off until ...tomorrow..lol. Seriously, I have never heard of a magnet shifting without a jolt of some kind. Dropping the cabinet would be a bad idea between now....and....tomorrow. .
  • Hello all, hope you are all having a fine Friday evening. Well I got some estimates on how much the crossover upgrades might be. I had no idea they would be twice as much as I paid for the speakers in the first place. I will have to adjust my schedule accordingly but still want to follow through with these improvements. It's just going to take a little longer than I thought. It will definitely be worth it all in the end. B)

I have these M&K s-90's and v-125 sub. So why in the last 2 weeks did I buy a pair of Polk 5a's and a pair of 10b's. Because I like to listen to music not speakers. The M&K's will point out any flaws in your source whether it is your amp, cd player or material being listened to. Very analytical.

I always wanted the 5a after destroying a pair of 10a's years ago. With the 5a's paired up with a Marantz sr8500 cut off at 80hz, a cheap Sony cd player and the v-125 for everything below 80hz I am finally listening to music again. I doubt the 5's were ever really driven because after 50 hours of use I have heard the low mids beef up and the tweets smooth out and most of all the imaging and sound stage vastly improve.

With the crossover being 30 years old I would have never thought that I would be experiencing the improvements of a "burn in" period.

I bought the 10b's for one reason only. They were $40 and in almost pristine condition. I had never heard the silver tweets before and so far no complaints. I had the amp crossover just like the 5a's with the subwoofer added but will soon set the amp to full range and drop the subwoofer so I can hear the 10b's full force.

Because of this forum and others like it I welded the magnets and made sure the fuses in the 5a's were correct. I'm now good to go.

I love these Polks and wonder if I'm going to hear the same improvements over time with the 10's as I did with the 5's.
  • I have been wanting a pair of 10a's with the peerless tweeters for a while, a long while. I have a chance to get what looks to be a very, very good pair. they are asking $200 what do you guys think? yes, they have all original drivers and internals too!

If they are in great shape it is an ok price, but a bit high. Then again, it really depends on how much you want them.

it's been hard to find a pair of them that appear to be in as good a shape as these at that price. perhaps I've just not been lucky. I also for a long while wanted to get either a pair of the 10a's or the 7's with the peerless tweeters in them.

I have a pair of 10 series II in my office at work and I love them. the ones at work are connected to a pc via an iFi nano iDSD DAC & an emotive mini X 2 channel integrated amp and I'm very happy with them they give good sound and plenty of low end.

I want to get this pair of 10's to go in my bedroom to replace a pair of monitor 5's as front L & R. they will be exceptionally good when I am listening to 2 channel music in the bedroom. I want to experience the peerless tweeters I've heard so much about. I've never been able to happen upon a pair of 7's peerless which I understand are considered by many to be the sweet spot of the peerless enabled speakers.

I don't mind the money either, money was made for spending! :D

That's what I paid for my RTA-12B's which also have Peerless tweeters. Price is a bit high but, really, not too out of line. What's an extra $50-$75, especially if they don't come up often in your area. Maybe offer $175 and see where it goes. I bet they'll take it.

Thought I'd chime in that modern (non-vintage) amps are fine also: I just upgraded to a brand new Yamaha (see sig) to drive 7 Polk speakers...and they sound just as good in 2-channel (music) as they do in surround sound.
    BTW, keep those Peerless tweats!

  • so, I finally got some stands for the 10a's, they are beautiful and fit the speakers incredibly well. got them from a guy on ebay and that's all he does is make custom stands for vintage speakers like these and others. this style is the "Lamar" line of stands. if you go to ebay and search "lamar stands" they will pop right up! I'm very happy I got the speakers and the stands too.

Wow, just what I was going to say. The 10z must sound really great with the Peerless Tweeters. Those stand look great. My favorite tweeter so far with any of my Polks most definitely the Peerless in the 5z.

I see you've already bought the stands, but I found that putting my 10's "on the floor" with tip-toes (or spikes) really brings out the bass in them. I did this for all four of my 10's and don't use/need a sub-woofer.

  • I've looked but can't find this. since so many of the vintage polks have fuses in them, if your not the original owner and don't have the original literature that came with the speakers, how do you know if the fuses in the speakers you have are the correct size and type? :( I have 10A's & 5jr's, both have fuses, I have no idea if the fuses in them are the right fuses. is there something official that's put out by polk that states fuse size in relation to speakers models? :o

The tweeter fuses in the early 7s and 10s were 1 amp (fast blow); those occasional models which also had system fuses (e.g., my Monitor 7As) had 1.5 amp fast blows in that role. Well, at least the 7s did; I guess I am not entirely sure the 10 was the same; maybe 2A system fuses for any Monitor 10s with two fuses?

thanks for your response, too bad there is not a master list from Polk with this info. I can find listings of almost all the speakers, their drivers, specs, year released, but, nothing about fuses for the ones that have them; that's a super important part of the system. considering they know there is a large population of us keeping the vintage dream alive. :p

I would play that on the safe side. Go 1 amp fast blow is what I would do. As far as I know it protects the tweeter only and I would think that all the Tweeters are about the same as far as power handling anyway. If you blow them at 1 amp try 1.5 amp. Anyway, that's what I would do. I am certain there is someone on this site who knows way more than I do about it.

I'm sure there is and I am hoping they speak up. thanks for your response. I'm not asking because there is anything wrong with my tweeters or that I've blown a fuse. I just was wondering, that we buy these things, they have fuses in them when we get them; are they the correct fuses and how would we know that? I was just hoping there was something released somewhere by Polk. we can find out about every driver and the new replacements by model number, yet, the only info not readily available is on the models that have fuses, what size they should be.

again, I was just curious, I'm an electrician and deep down inside, it's bothering me not knowing if the proper OCPD is installed for the tweeters. again, thanks for responding.

I may be making a call to Polk this week to purchase some RDO 194 Tweeters for my SDA 2bs.kf I do I will ask if someone in engineering could lead us in the right direction. I will post if I find out anything.

I am going to check the speakers I have here and post back (when I can and I remember) as to the fuse sizes in my 10z and 5z. Perhaps if nothing else we can get a comparison list up of what we have presently in our speakers as this. Is an Excellent question. BTW, not too long ago one of the Tweeters went out in one of the Monitor 11z. I found the tweeter was not bad. All it was was a fuse holder was dirty. These were speakers that I had not cleaned up yet from when I bought them. Cleaned the contacts and fuses and no further problems.

As mhardy stated, your 10A's use a 1A fast blow fuse. It's called out on the schematic.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/5021930/uploads/attachments/4/6/7/2/8/18775.pdf

I have 3/4A fast blow fuses in my 10A's with no problem.
Back in the 70's I had a pair of mini monitors in a Trans Am and had trouble popping 1A fuses due to the "thump" from the amp when powering on. I switched to 2a fuses and pounded the stuffings out of those speakers with absolutely no problems.

you can also do the math and make an informed decision :- ) as to what size fuse to use.

    Ohm's -- it's the Law ;- )

    Power* = voltage x current
    ...or...
Power* = (current)^2 x resistance [or impedance, for AC]
    (1 amp)^2 x 8 ohms = 8 watts
    (1 amp)^2 x 6 ohms = 6 watts

    more or less :-P

I think even a fast blow fuse will tolerate 150% (or maybe even 200%) of its nominal load for a brief time.

    ______

    * for a pure, resistive load ("power factor" = 1), at any rate.

heh, heh, heh... another recent thread here just photo-documented the relatively uncommon dual fuse version of the Monitor 7A... so I thought I'd share a photo here for posterity.

Here's the original thread for reference (and well worth a look for its nice photos of a unique and nicely done rehab of a pair of 7As): http://forum.polkaudio.com/discussion/171139/a-bit-of-a-modern-twist-on-a-classic
