Hello all. Newbie here.
question: i am looking at a pair of Polk SDA . I have two Sony TA-55ES amps.
Will they be able to power the Polks? What SDA `s would you recommend to get? listen to a lot of blues, classic and some old rockanroll.
Thank you. Regards.

Sorry meant SDA
-
Do you know what model SDA's they are? Pictures may help identify them.
-
speakers I am looking at are SDA 1.2 TL , USED.
-
The Sony will drive it, but don't expect to shake the walls. Low to moderate levels only. 150 watts @ 4 ohms. Bi-Amping would help using both, but again, nothing earth shaking.Home Theater/2 Channel:

I have two amps and they each will power a speaker
It says on the manual up to three hundred watts in mono
Thoughts? -
300 watts @ 8 ohms bridged, not going to work with SDAs.Home Theater/2 Channel:

So what amps do you suggest! I am not a rich guy and I like vintage hear?

Since I am a newbie , could someone explain what is a Dreadnought, what does it do and why do I need it?
Thank you -
Also what is so special about those speakers? That they need special gear?
-
Because of the interconnect cable that allows the SDA drivers to work they need a common ground amplifier. You can't use monoblocks or bridged amps without dreadnought.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

what is the principle then behind the interconnect cable?
-
or what /why do those speakers need an interconnect? just learning a lot and loving that!
-
The difference in sound between the left and right channels gets played on the opposite channel dimensional drivers, the interconnect cable is how this works. It works to prevent interaural crosstalk. There used to be a white paper but the link apparently no longer works. There are a lot of threads though, with some searching.

Nightfall
cool picture by the way!
So if I get an interconnect, then I need a very powerful amp to drive these.
Would a Yamaha m-80 work: 250 Watts per channel? -
If you get one? They are selling the 1.2TL's without the interconnect cable?afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

yes it is at a pawn shop. they are in ok shape. I can redo/fix the box/have a wood shop in my garage, and upgrade the crossover and such. But no interconnect.
-
I have a yamaha M-80 being worked on at the Legendary Amps store. .
-
You can make an interconnect cable. Listening to SDA's without the interconnect cable is like cereal without milk.
Are any of the midwoofers frozen or scratchy? No tweeters blown? How much are they asking?afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.
Village Idiot of Club Polk -
two tweeters blown, all other speakers seem fine. they want 300 as is. Cabinets are in need of TC.
-
That's a smoking deal if two tweeters and some woodwork is all that is really wrong with them. Might even offer $250, it is a pawnshop after all. To replace all the tweeters will be $400, which still puts you well under their value.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Yes
So the Yamaha would be good to power these? -
I have a Yammy M-80 powering the smaller SDA1C's, but I see no reason why it couldn't drive the big 1.2TL's. Rated @ 290Watts into 6ohms/330 into a 4ohm load. I had Skip go through my M80 as well. He does great work!2.3TL's - Living Room
CRS+'s (4.1 TL's) - Office
SDA1C's - Famdamly Rm

Other bridged amps will drive a four- or lower-ohm load with ease.
Adcom GFA-555 and '555 II will drive a 4-ohm load when bridged. I think Adcom suggests using the "Fan Kit" for 4-ohm bridged operation.
Aragon Palladium is a factory-bridged amp that will put nearly 1000 watts into a 2-ohm load. The current-production equivalent, the Iridium, will also drive a 4 ohm load (perhaps less.)
Spread-Spectrum Technologies "Ampzilla 2000" is a factory-bridged amp rated for 8 and 4 ohm use, that is "stable below 1 ohm".
What the Sony TA-55ES amps will deliver into a nominal 6-ohm load I can't say. The owner's manual may have that info. -
I downloaded the owners manual. It has 12, 8, 6, and 4 ohm rating for 2 channel, but only an 8 ohm rating for bridged operation. They do list "Dynamic Power" for 8, 6 and 4 ohms while bridged, but not continuous. Since the 1.2s are already @ 6 ohms to start, I would not operate them with the Sony'sHome Theater/2 Channel:
