It has arrived - speakers are here!!

So it has arrived... On their pallets. Getting some friends over to lift them off the pallets and upstairs to the stereo room. Stupid freight people actually took the speakers off the pallet and started to "shimmee" the speakers across the truck floor.

I walked up to the truck and was like - dude what are you guys doing?? That's supposed to remain on the pallet.

They're like - these are only speakers man.

I was like - dude those are $15,000... They need to remain on the pallet.

So they put them back on the pallet but not before they chipped on of the black foam panels on the bottom. Pissed me off how callous they can be.

Anyway, they look to be in good shape looking at the box (otherwise)... So I'm hoping the interior is fine and the diamond tweeters remain intact. The cross over is in the plinth/base so I'm sure that's ok and nothing is loose within the cabinet.

Anyway, I gotta get these up to my room and I gotta go back to sleep since I work the night shift tonight... But I'm off the next 2 days!!

Yeah I worked the night shift last night and again tonight... Went to be right after my shift when I got home this morning... Slept for almost 4 hours before the freight guys came... I have to go back to bed but I'm too excited... I need atleast another 4 hours of sleep before I'm functional for one last night shift before my 2 days off... Figured I'll get them up by 3pm here in Texas and then sleep till 8 and the go to work at 9p and then come back at 6a...

Still kinda bummed that they chipped off some styrofoam on the bottom. The delivery guys are so dumb.

I'm going to complain to the freight company tomorrow.

For moving them up?? I could use a hand LOL!

Yeah but I got 2 friends coming right now so I think I'm good there. BUt I was so excited when it first came that I was trying to see if I could do it myself... then I realized... umm.... no.

When my speakers were delivered the freight company did not send a lift gate truck like they were paid to do so me and the truck driver had to lift them off the back of the 18 wheeler. Then it was my job to get them in the house and setup.

I did it without any help. I just don't think you are motivated enough. :)

Unboxing the Cary 211 was the worst... I was only able to unbox/uncrate 1... took me like over 30 minutes... so heavy and awkward packaging and dimensions. Taking a break....

    Haha...

I would say, it is a very rudimentary set up. Still awaiting room treatments to come in next week.

Need to work on placement, need to look for furniture to place in the room. I initially thought about getting something like a really nice chair ala Eames Chair or the DWR Flight recliner, but I think I want something like a couch to have some adjustability of seating positions and to have more than 1 person in a spot.

Right now, I'm thinking I am 60% satisfied with the sound.

Stay away from leather whatever you do. It really likes to bounce those high frequencies around. If you are in a bedroom or the like, you should look at modular designs. Macy's had a few we liked and lovesac also sells a modular sectional now. Go check out Nebraska furniture mart as well. At least you can say you've been there.

Yep. Will check out what's out there.

So far, this is what I got. Playing with the 306 SACD, it's got upsampling and interestingly enough, they actually change the sound. So I was listening to standard non upsampled from the getgo and I was getting this fuzz around the imaging. Then went to 192 and 384 and the fuzz had gone away and the sound appears significantly more holographic. Not sure which I prefer more.

I still think the room will benefit from a lot of treatment, the sound is not bright at all, but there is definitely some slap echo going on here.

I think bass is a little light, probably placement dependent... but could be related to 2nd floor installation. Could also be related to amplification and perhaps regardless of how great the 211FE is, perhaps, it's just not the best match for the Diamonds....? Not sure yet, the sound is perhaps 70% of where I think it should be.

Placement is everything with the 802's. They are remarkable speakers and one could argue they are one of the very best made at any price.
One day I would love to own such high end speakers and really build a serious 2 channel listening room.
Congrats man , jealous over here.

    Very impressive spread there!

So what are your thoughts on furniture? Minimal, open rack, closed, metal, wood, etc? How does the Mrs. feel about treatments on the walls, color, etc?

As far as bass....at least your pre has outputs. Gives you options if you decide to add a couple of subs.

Is that right speaker far enough away from the door so that they don't hit each other? Looks awful close.

I lock one of the doors, but I have been playing with positioning and I think it might be away from the doors. Still have a lot of work to do.

I was thinking open rack, easy to add components and easy to remove components. The room is all mine, so there is no WAF to satisfy. I have light grey treatments coming. First wave of treatments are coming, but I am assuming I have another load of treatments after that so I can have clouds installed. Perhaps I was thinking of standing absorbers to I can move them around as needed along the side walls.... but I'm not sure yet. I will post pics of the side walls so I can get some input.

I'm hoping he gets it set up soon and tries to convert a couple of Texas Usher guys to B&W.

Hahaha.. you already have your group of Usher guys here.

At this time, I honestly think I am lacking some bass but will play with set up. I don't mind buying a pair of Velodynes or Rel or JL Audio Fathoms... but I would really rather not deal with subs if I can. I will play with positioning some more. I will also demo a pair of MAC 601 mono blocks to see if I get some punch there, but would have to do it instore and not in-house.

If I can get the sound to where I like it but without the bass, that really means that I am a bass head and probably the logical step would be to go either 800 diamond and sell these.

There is also a nagging nagging nagging feeling that I should get a pair of Strads, which even have more slam than the 800 diamonds. I have a demo set in Chicago when I go visit in 2 weeks. That will be VERY telling to how and where my system goes.

I spoke to the wife yesterday, I asked for clearance to buy a pair of MC601 mono blocks to go with the Cary 211FE - my argument was based on the fact that the 211FE mono blocks may be dangerous for the baby who crawls around.. but the cool running MC601 mono blocks would be great and safe.

She said she would think about it.
