2 TB Hard Drive

THJ transferred 1368 FLAC files to a hard drive that Dave (Westmassguy) formatted for me. Thanks to both as im sure the spent their valuable time and wanted nothing in return.
Im running it through my Sony BluRay and it works great, but not all the files are showing. I took the hard drive upstairs to my desktop and it is showing all the files are there, but when hooked back up to the bluray, only about half are listed for play. Goes from R TO Z.
What gives?

The Sony may have limited onboard memory. It's most likely designed to read USB thumb drives which have limited capacity. When you plug in an external storage device, the Sony scans the device, and stores a list of what's on it in memory. It can then create play lists from that stored list. With the number of files on the External drive, you've probably exceeded it's design specs. I would read the owners manual, and see what it says about external storage.Home Theater/2 Channel:

What model is the Sony?
Is the HDD formatted in Fat32 or NTFS?
Is the HDD powered by the USB port or does it have an external power supply?afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Here's people using the older model with 1 and 2tb HDD's so it should work fine.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Deron, didn't realize your Sony would recognize NTFS. Yours is FAT32, and the Sony should be able recognize and read all the files.Home Theater/2 Channel:

None of my ripping would have been possible without Westmasguy's guidraance and patience! Paying forward with the 10+hr transfer was a pleasure to do Deron, and once you get the hang of adding CD's on your own, it will be even more rewarding. Having a great network player down the road will make it too cool. Hope you figure the Sony player out. So, the first file shown is $Recycle.bin, then all the Rs and rest follow. Thing is, that file is not on the hard drive. It must be on my bluray. Cant delete it
-
As soon as you connected it to a Windows PC, recycle bin folder is addedHome Theater/2 Channel:

It was on there from the get go. Can i get it off?
-
Of course it was. I formatted the drive with a Windows machine.
If you delete it, the next time you connect it to a Windows machine, it will just be re-created again.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Hmmmm....must just be the way the bluray reads it. Im gonna take it to Johnnys and hook it up to his SM6 and see if all will play
-
Deron, I think it might be a bug in the Sony BR Player, not the drive.
BTW, the recycle.bin file is normally hidden on a Windows machine, which is why you've most likely never seen it before. On your computer, if you go to Control Panel, Folder Options, and check "Show Hidden Files", any hard drive on you system will have the recycle.bin and one or more other hidden files.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Ok, thanks Dave.

Ok, the hard drive is fine. We hooked it up to my Samsung 4K TV and all files showed perfectly and played a couple at random. It is indeed the bluray player. I'm thinking if or when Deron gets time to contact Sony customer support, a factory reset (if that's possible on a bluray player) will be the cure. If not, players are cheap enough these days, so maybe a great reason/excuse to grab a new one?? Just relieved that it wasn't the hard drive. Took about 11 hours to make that happen. Rock on my audio brother, all the way to Best Buy!! lol"if it's not fun, it's not worth it & remember folks, "It's All About The Music"!!

Can you just stream the FLAC files over DLNA from the Sony, leaving the hard drive connected to your computer?afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Deron, your computer can read all the files. Johnny's Computer, Stream Magic and 4K TV can read and play all the files on your Drive. The problem is your BRD Player. You may be able to Re-Set the Player, or there may be a Firmware upgrade that's available, and may rectify the problem.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Yup, the computer and THJs gear can read all the files. The prob is definitely with the Sony. I did a reset and firmware update, but no success.
Gonna have to look for something that will work. -
Hate hearing that. The BRD Player otherwise works perfectly correct?Home Theater/2 Channel:

His BRD Player is supposed to be able to read all the files directly from an external storage device, and it doesn't.

I understand. He made it sound like he is going to go out and purchase something, just wanted him to be aware that there is a free solution if all else fails. I leave my computer on 24/7 which made me fail to realize not everyone is okay with doing that, fair point.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

I only have a desktop and while its decent, its upstairs and require me to not only stream wi-fi, but run up and down when i want to make a selection.
Ive seen some pretty cheap samsung and panny blurays that may fit the bill -

I also have a Sony Blu Ray player in our guest bedroom, so I hooked up the HD to it and while it sees all the files on that drive it will not play them. I am not interested in why it doesn't, it just doesn't! Like you stated there are some pretty cheap options to get ya hearing the files you now have, and it's sure worth the try. If whatever one you get doesn't work, take it back...simple! I'd look for one that has a USB port on the back side, not a fan of cables hanging out the front of my gear.....but that's just me?? For what it's worth, the files sound pretty good through the blu ray players, not like the quality of my Stream Magic 6, but pretty good! Hope you find a nice one, and remember, my SM6 may be an option in a couple of months??

Ill research a bit and thnx for the offer on the SM6.
