Hopefully we'll get a slow thaw, not a leapfrog from winter to summer like we've had a few times in the past decade. We're on high ground, but my buddy lives right next to the Connecticut River. If we get a fast thaw, the river will definitely reach flood stage very quickly, and a lot of homes will be under water.

Yes, the snow is largely annoying -- very annoying -- and can cause serious problems.

But the thaw is in my opinion vary more dangerous. The flooding can be annoying -- a few inches in the basement -- or a real problem -- flooded roads, etc. -- or a disaster -- river over their banks and homes washed out or away.

Even with an "orderly" meltdown this year, if we are so lucky as to get one, I think we are in for serious flooding. There is just too much snow on the ground.

When it starts to melt, it will insulate the ground from thawing for a long time. The water won't infiltrate the soil; it will run off into streams and rivers, and floods will be inevitable.

You are absolutely correct. If we get the thaw during the day and freezing during the night, it usually makes the morning commute a disaster.

Anyone in a 25/50, hel* maybe even a 100 year flood zone should be grabbing their sacks and getting prepared for the worst if we get a fast thaw but, as the temps look right now, we won't be in it for a while.

It still cracks me up about snow totals. Everyone is all up in arms for the *Boston* snowfall totals, now being the 2nd snowiest winter in recorded history yet the Worcester area has more than Boston. Nobody cares about the rest of the state. :-1:
